Christina Hendricks stars in Broken Bells' new sci-fi video: Watch here! Plus, James Mercer talks next Shins album

Last month, EW gave you a sneak peek at Broken Bells‘ “The Ghost Inside” video, in which Mad Men star Christina Hendricks plays a gorgeous robot. Today the video is out, and it’s as fun as those still images suggested. Check it out after the jump to see the lengths Hendricks’ android will go to retire comfortably, and how the Broken Bells guys (producer Danger Mouse and Shins singer James Mercer) figure into her quest.

As you’ll see, “The Ghost Inside” includes more costumes and special effects than you’ll find in the entire Shins videography put together. “This is like our song showing up in a stretch Hummer,” Mercer told me a few weeks ago with a laugh. “It’s so glossy and amazing-looking that I’m almost like, ‘Oh my God, people are gonna think that…’ I dunno. It’s just so different from anything I’ve ever done. It’s, like, f—ing pro. And Christina Hendricks is in it! It’s sorta scary, but it’s cool.”

Watch the video after the jump (clip via Vulture) — and keep reading for Mercer’s thoughts on the future of the Shins.

When I spoke with Mercer, he and Danger Mouse were just about to hit the road together as Broken Bells. “You know, in some ways I am [looking forward to touring],” he said. “But at the same time, I feel like I have a lot of work to do on my own for Shins stuff, and I’m going to miss my kids and wife.”

Hold on a sec. “Shins stuff,” as in a follow-up to 2007’s Wincing the Night Away, since which the indie rockers have lost two members and generally stayed quiet? You bet. “I have a bunch of writing I want to do, songs I need to finish up, and I need to get ready to record the next Shins record,” Mercer elaborated. He was reluctant to say when fans might expect a new album from the Shins — “Every time I get asked that question, I do guess [at a release date], and then I get in trouble for it” — but felt confident that recording sessions will occur in 2010. So that’s something to look forward to.

What do you think of Broken Bells’ new video? And how excited are you at the prospect of another album from the Shins in the not-too-distant future?

I had never heard of The Shins or Broken Bells until I saw a news item on Ms. Hendricks.

I was floored by the video and music. The fantasy shot in the beginning with Ms. Hendricks is so 1940’s and just wickedly beautiful. The cut to ‘real-time’ with her as the ships sole occupant and pilot really brings home the message of reality versus fantasy and the successive footage of the story really delivers us to a great bittersweet ending…yeah, she makes it to her destination but nearly 150 years too late and at what price.

I love the video! Danger Mouse and James Mercer really went out on a limb to ask Ms. Hendricks to star in their video and I am so glad she did…I don’t think any other actress could have given the video the same feel or angst. YOU ROCK!
