Image Credit: Emma SummertonJust in time for the waning reign of “California Gurls” and its candy-coated swurls, Katy Perry has dropped another single, the title track from her upcoming sophomore album (not counting, of course, the Katy Hudson years) Teenage Dream.
It’s being pulled from YouTube about as quickly as the fans are uploading it, but Perez Hilton has a sanctioned stream here; the midtempo love song (ode to Aldous Snow?) continues the retro steez that was all over “Gurlz”—here, I’m getting ’80s ladies like Pat Benatar and Berlin‘s Terri Nunn, maybe a little Kim Wilde; either way, it’s definitely wearing a Danskin leotard.
The song goes to iTunes tomorrow. What do you think, readers—does this bode well for Dream? Or do you prefer the Perry of bi-curious kisses and Vegas wake-up calls?

Everyone can sit around and be like “This is crap music,” “Anyone who likes this is stupid,” “This is what’s wrong with America,” blah, blah, blah
Meanwhile, I’ll be shaking my hips like yeah…this girl knows how to churn out the hits!
Wow…a Mily quote. You’re cool
Wow… a douchebag comment. You’re cool.
and it’s “moving my hips like yeah” so…yeah
She’s definitely getting better. Like the verses more than the chorus.
I love it! Its just fun! People take things to seriously sometimes. She’s not trying to change the world, its just a fun song.
Ryan Seacrest is also streaming it on ryanseacrest dot com if you are Perez-adverse like me.
I found this single pretty boring, to be honest. Of course, I didn’t care for any of the slower tempo songs on her first album. They just exposed her lack of singing ability. The backing track here also feels like a rehash.
I heard it on the radio earlier today, and it’s fun, but it’s definitely no “California Gurls.” I think I would place it third in my Katy Perry singles hierarchy, but I’m still excited to hear the rest of the album.
I think this actually sounds better than “California Gurls.” I was actually getting tired of that song with Snoop that any new material from her was welcome. Heck, it doesn’t even sound like Katy, which may be an indication that it’s been overproduced. Nevertheless, I like it.
Meh.
A second single already? “California Gurls” hasn’t been out all that long… I thought they were positioning that to be the “Song of the Summer” for 2010. Look how long the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” was a radio hit… they’re STILL playing that thing more than a year later! Are people getting really tired of “California Gurls” already? Maybe it’s because the chorus is so similar the chorus of Ke$ha’s song “Tik Tok?”
It’s fairly standard practice to have two songs out before an album release this day. California Gurls is a few months old and still has plenty of life to it. They’re just prepping a second one to keep interest up for the month that’s left until the album comes out.
I actually like this song way better than “California Gurls” which got old really fast. This is a cute song and it reminds me of “Hot ‘n Cold” and “Thinking of You”.
the beat reminds me so much of california girls. just another pop song basically.
This songs pretty fun but I like her other leak “ET” a lot better. It should have been the second single.
I don’t hate this, but I also don’t love it. Maybe its cause I can’t understand why she is releasing a song & album called “Teeange Dreams” ? This would be appropriate for Miley or Selena Gomez, but not someone engaged to be married to a leud British man.
If u listen to the lyrics of the song its not about BEING a teenager. Its about someone making u feel that way again.
I listened quite well! I understand what she was trying to convey in the lyrics, but I guess let me clarify. This will be Katy’s “Maneater”…Nelly’s “Promiscuous” was SO huge the summer she released it, that when her label rush released “Maneater” (which I still think is a great track & single) it never peaked higher than #16 on the Hot 100. Of course once digital sales factor in to “Teenage Dream” it’ll prolly be a top 10 song for Perry but I’m calling it now, it just doesn’t WOW me, like when I first heard “CA Gurls” this song won’t go to #1.
Phil – wasn’t the rush for “Maneater” due to its huge popularity across Europe. It was one of the top selling U.K. songs in 2006 and the label wanted to capitalize on that? So happy that “Say it Right” was released after that – called it as a #1 hit when I first heard it.
Agree totally with Phil (and am so on board with the Maneater analogy – will be listening to that in a few). It just meandered along for me, like something I would listen to if I were washing dishes or doing the laundry. Think it will hit the top 5 on initial digital sales, but will trail off quickly after that.
BTW, it’s on iTunes now and currently sits at #20.
Hahaha go grab the Arman Van Helden Remix of “California Gurls” instead!!
Another smash hit from Dr. Luke & Max Martin! I love it … this electro-pop sound that is so popular right now fits her very well. Can’t wait for the album!!!!!
who cares if she’s not a teen? she’s talking about “remember what it was like TO BE A TEEN?” geez to people are SO quick to judge. it’s a fun, good song. end of story.
her voice is so annoying
the song is okay. nothing really special…sounds alot like other songs. Not horrible, just…eh.
