'House' star Hugh Laurie to record blues album

Hugh-LaurieImage Credit: Isabella Vosmikova/FoxHugh Laurie is getting serious about the blues. The British House star announced today via press release that he’s signed with Warner Music Entertainment to release a New Orleans blues album that he plans to spend the rest of the summer and fall recording (hat tip: USA Today). Folk-rocker Joe Henry will produce, and several musical collaborators yet to be named are expected to join in the sessions. Cheers to the New York Times‘ Dave Itzkoff for getting to the House of Blues” headline pun first.

The announcement can’t come as too much of a surprise to regular viewers of Fox’s House, where the cantankerous doctor played by Laurie has frequently shown off his piano and guitar talents. Laurie shares his character’s skills in real life; he is “predominantly self-taught (after creative differences with his childhood teacher),” according to the press release. “I am drunk with excitement at this opportunity,” he adds in the same release. “I know the history of actors making music is a checkered one, but I promise no one will get hurt.”

What do you think of this news? Would you buy Hugh Laurie’s blues record?

You probably mean this as a joke, but I like Bruce’s jam sessions. He’s no rock star, but he can play and sing. I can’t wait to buy this CD!

Since Hugh Laurie doesn’t seem like the type to put out some junk just to cash in on his fame, I think that this will be a serious musical endeavor. Maybe Meatloaf will return the favor and be on Hugh’s album.

Hell Yes, I will be getting this album. Hugh Laurie is an AWESOME musician and anything he does is brilliant.

  • Sora

Oh Dear Mr, Laurie, I bet you’ll make a record well worth playing a billion times! If you sing the blues I shall never stop dreaming in the blue…

I would certainly give this a listen. He’s a talented guy, I’m looking forward to seeing what he comes up with. The fact it would be a blues album is just a lovely bonus.

A Hugh Laurie blues record? Definitely!

  • Cheri

I will definitely buy this and pray for a tour! Now if he would just write that second novel…hint, hint Hugh!

  • Galen

Have you heard his stuff on “A Bit of Fry and Laurie”? It’s all comedy songs, but he still shows off quite a bit of talent playing guitar and piano. Look it up on youtube!
