M.I.A. promises free make-up show after Hard NYC fiasco

m-i-a-hard-nycImage Credit: Roger Kisby/Getty ImagesMuddy sound, messy set list — by most accounts, M.I.A.’s headlining performance at the Hard NYC festival on Governors Island this past Saturday was in trouble even before heavy thunderstorms forced her to end it early. Last night, the controversial singer took to Twitter to try and make it up to her disappointed fans. “f— it!” she wrote. “im gonna do a free show in nyc when i get back, tho i dont have powers over rain! if u still have the hard ticket u free! xxxo.” A few minutes later, she extended the offer further: “if u do me a lil dance , ill let u in too!”

A rep for M.I.A. did not immediately respond to EW’s request for confirmation that the free show is happening. Were you at Hard NYC? What did you think? Would you be interested in seeing M.I.A.’s free make-up show, if and when it happens? Sound off in the comments below.

A free make-up show? Is this like when Kiss toured with without their make-up? Girl really needs to come up with her own ideas. Jeesh.

    • JW

I dunno Chaz, I think a free make-up show is different from a makeup-free show (I think that’s what Kiss did). This one may involve Revlon.

    • Adam

Are you stupid? I hope your kidding (for your sake and those around you).

      • Cha’s ex-dude

You wouldn’t say that if you saw who was around me.

I appreciate M.I.A.’s acknowledgment that the show was a disaster – this is the right way to handle this situation (a little humility for a change) I arrived on Governors Island at 4:30 and saw all sets, the strongest being Die Antwoord which were phenomenal and blew the audience away. The thunderstorm simply put the M.I.A. performance and fans out of their misery – thousands had left and were on the boats back to Manhattan by the time it hit. I was on the roof of a passenger boat with hundreds others, so yeah, it wasn’t really about that.

The show was horrible. When she came on everyone kept waiting for the real music to start, any song at all, but there was only noise. She owes her fans big time but from what I’ve heard from NYC fans she’s never put on a good show for us so…not holding my breath.

  • tony

sounds more like a threat. heyo.

  • Julia

The show was so horrible (ditto Tabitha) that I wouldn’t even begin to know how much you would have to pay me to stand and “watch her perform” again. She was HORRIBLE times a million.

  • Amanda

The show was a horrible disappointment but I love M.I.A’s music and as long as this free show is not on Governor’s Island I will give her another chance.

  • david

i was at the show and she was lucky the rain started b/c she was HORRIBLE. i was on the ferry when the rain hit…die antwoord and skream + benga stole the show.

    • Adam

I know the rained actually saved her. Half the crowd was leaving before the rain started. I would be embarrassed if I was her. I was toward the stage for her first few song and the crowd was just standing there like “what the hell is this?”

  • Tad

Why would I or anyone else subject themselves again to another crappy performance from MIA even if it is free?

  • Adam

I was at the show and MIA was horrible. I came to see her but ended up enjoying the other bands. She came on twitter and first blamed everyone else; you are the star MIA the responsibility falls on you no matter what. Half the crowd was leaving before it even rained. She had no set list, sounded bad, and you would think that it was her first time performing. The out cry has nothing to do with the rain. Which is evident if you look at the backlash that followed on twitter; which is why I think you was forced to claim “free show” (not because she cares). We will see if it happens I won’t hold my breath. I would go only to get my $’s worth ($50 tickets :/ ) not because I expect a better performance.

I had a great time and loved her performance, actually. Granted I missed the first two songs (ie w/ the major sound problems) but I did see was awesome. Boys and World Town w/ the rain coming down were especially good, actually, and the crowd was loving it. Going back to the boat I didn’t hear anyone complain about anything, except the sound in one case, and lots of positive comments. So yes, I’ll happily go to the free show! :)

    • CattyCat

Did MIA pay you to post that?

  • Alissa

I love MIA and her music, but unfortunately seeing her live @ HardFest confirmed my worst fear: she should probably stay confined to the studio! I’d still go to a free show though for suree! I love her message overall and would love to support her again

    • Alex

hun you lose hope to easily i’ve seen her perform before and she was amazing. this is the first time there is any backlash on one of her performances, let’s not be so dramatic and label her, she’s amazing! xxxo

  • Alex

You guys are basing one bad set list on her ability as a performance which is completely unfair and ridiculous. Sure it wasn’t great but many things contributed to that specially sound. However I’ve seen her perform before and she was incredible. I will never forget. It is her aesthetic to improvise and although most times it works on her favor this time was one of the rare occasions it didn’t. Get over it people! xxo

  • Kali

I would not deny that her show was not up to par. I saw her in SF back in 08 and she put on a spectacular show. I blame the equipment and overpowering of sound effects the dj added. I wonder if they even had soundcheck of her set. I was disappointed because she’s usually awesome. On the ferry ride back to Manhattan I had a thought that she may do another show and to get in using your Hard ticket. My speculations were right. She’s dope like that. She’ll make up for it guys. I’ve seen her before.

  • Franca

I think it’s really good that she’s thinking about doing a free show. I wasn’t at the NYC show but it sounds like it was sound problems and weather, how exactly is that COMPLETELY M.I.A.’s fault?
