Katy Perry debuts new song 'Peacock': 'I'm hoping it will be a gay-pride anthem'

Katy Perry has positively dominated the summer airwaves with her crazily infectious hit “California Gurls,” and she recently blew up the music scene again with her delightful follow-up “Teenage Dream.” (I can’t get enough of it! “No regrets, just love…”) And now: There’s more! Over the weekend at the 2010 MTV World Stage show in Mayalasia, Perry debuted another potential chart-buster, “Peacock,” a song she hilariously discussed with EW earlier this year.

In the song (which you can see Perry perform live after the jump), Summer’s It Gurl asks: ”Are you brave enough to let me see your peacock?” over a supremely thumping “Hey Mickey”-ish beat. ”I’m hoping it will be a gay-pride anthem,” Perry told EW’s Whitney Pastorek in our Summer Music Preview. ”Peacocks represent a lot of individuality…. It’s not just like, ‘I wanna see your bulge.”’ And then she went on to clarify: ”It does have the word c–k in it, but art is also in fart! It’s all in how you look at it.” Oh, Katy—always keeping it interesting!

Take a watch/listen of “Peacock” here:

So the quality of the video isn’t the best, but you get the idea of what “Peacock” is all about. Did anyone else sense a Gwen Stefani a la “Hollaback Girl” vibe to the song? Maybe it’s sort of thumpiness that’s going on. I predict that, once “Peacock” comes out officially, I will listen to it again and hate it. Then I’ll listen about 20 more times immediately after and become obsessed. That’s my usual route with Katy Perry. But more importantly, I’d love to hear from you: What do you think? Do you loves? Hates? Can it possibly be better than “Teenage Dream” or “California Gurls”?

awful, just like her other songs.she is talentless!

  • Molly

she sounds weird when she talks in the beginning. I like the song though.

    No.

Teenage dream is brilliant. The other two songs are OK. And i hate to burst your bubble Jordan, but Katy is far from talentless. She writes, plays instruments and has a strong singing voice. If you don’t like POP music then fine. But don’t down play the talents of the artist in that genre.

I’m interested to see how the produced version sounds since this whole call & answer shouting thing for the hook is being done by her back up singers. But I do like this song worlds more than “Teenage Dream”.

I love Teenage Dream, I think it’s her best single to date, it’s earnest, poppy, heartfelt, but not sappy. This is a fun song, but it’s Stargate, so I don’t want to judge the quality until I hear production. That’s what the emphasis will be on, anyway. The actual chorus is a lot better than the lame intro, sorry Katy, but I think that’s too cheerleader-y and way overdone by singers.

I pretty much have the same reaction to katy perry. i hate her music the first time i hear it and then it becomes an addictive pop treat.

My reaction to a woman whose claim to fame is using fake lesbianism to revive her dead christian music career?

    Total barf.

Just like every other Katy Perry record, great production values, mixed in with trite lyrics, and totally disposable in the junkyard of pop songs of the last ten years. One more thing, Perry can’t write euphemisms to save her life.

    It’s Malaysia, not Mayalasia.

I think Katy is a beautiful, talented girl, but this song is in very poor taste. If she can’t think of anything better to sing about, it is pretty sad.
