Katy Perry debuts dark new single 'Circle the Drain,' aimed at a (possibly famous) pill-popping ex-boyfriend

Katy-PerryImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR PhotosA day after her video for “Teenage Dream” debuted, Katy Perry has unveiled another track from her sophomore album that’s now available on iTunes—but unlike the sugar-coated reverie of “California Gurls” and the passionate foreplay of “Teenage Dream,” “Circle the Drain” is a decidedly more angry tune.

In it, she sings: “You could’ve been the greatest/But you’d rather get wasted” and “Wanna be your lover, not your f—in’ mother.”

Rumors are swirling that the song is an anti-love letter to Perry’s former flame, Gym Class Heroes frontman turned solo star Travie McCoy, whom she dated before meeting her current fiance, Russell Brand. The singer went on to tell Billboard that “Circle the Drain” is her ‘You Oughta Know,’ Alanis Morissette moment.”

What do you think of the single? Is it fair for Perry to call out McCoy in such an, um, public way? And how does the song hold up to “Gurls” and “Teenage Dream”?

    It’s okay.

  • Kevin

There are only 2 reasons for anyone to pay any attention to the “talent” that is Katy Perry and they are both located approximately 12 inches below her eyes… she has nothing else to offer.

    • who cares

she’s no worse than any other pop star, and at least she has a sense of humor

      • Beth

        She is self-righteous and hypocritical.

    • Phil

And there’s zero reasons to pay attention to you.

      • Dave

Zero reasons to pay attention to Kevin, yet you still did. Bravo, Phil.

    • Chris

      Exactly, Kevin!
Horrible, horrible music. Anybody who’s over 15 and likes this garbage needs to have their head examined.

      • LK

I got my head examined (I’m 24) and they said I’m completely open-minded when it comes to music, unlike others. Pretty sure you’re just upset that she didn’t turn out to be a one-hit wonder.

    • MultiPass

It’s pop music. get over it. And yourself. why are you even posting on here if you don’t care for her? Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

    • Casey

I agree with MultiPass. Are you really looking for deep, meaningful lyrics in popular music? Good luck with that. We all know music these days is mostly crap or for fun. Go listen to some crap indie band or something.

    • Michael

      ur wrong

  • JayK

Is it fair? Of course. I think musicians get to write songs about whatever they like! I think it would be a little tacky to publically announce “This song is about __________” or name someone in a song, but write about whatever or whomever you like!

  • Marty

I agree with Kevin – as an “artist” she’s worthless at best. Keep wearing those outfits on the red carpet honey because the day will come (and sooner than you think) when people are going to stop buying what you are selling.

  • sushifox

I agree with Amanda – it’s okay. Not an especially great song, but certainly not the worst of what’s out there. It’s a bit overproduced for me, but I like that she’s going somewhere a little deeper than bubblegum pop. I also like that the wee young’uns listening will hear Katy Perry essentially saying that drug use is pathetic and unattractive. But it’s still got a bit of the Katy Perry bubblegummy feel to it to me, and there’s no way she can equal the awesome firepower of “You Oughta Know” until she lets loose and screams a little and stops adding all the cheesy distracting echo effects.

  • Bee

yikes that song is horrible. for every nice moment, there are 5 terrible instances of terrible beats and over-processed sound

  • Adam

How can we have three singles off this album and it still hasn’t been released? What’s taking so long for this album to come out?? “California Girls” has already been playing all summer, now “Teenage Dream” is all over the radio and ANOTHER single is out… put the album on sale already!

    • ivo

Don’t forget “Not Like the Movies”…haha so that’s 4 singles out already sheesh!

    • Drew

They arent official singles. They arent going to radio. They’re just promo singles to hype the album. Taylor Swift and the Black Eyed Peas did the same thing.
Cali Gurls and Teenage Dream are the only official singles.

  • ballroom dancer

I really like the song. I felt that Katy took a risk with something different and I give her mad props even though I like Teenage Dream a lot better. I hope the rest of the album is as good as the past 4 singles on iTunes!

    • Harry

‘Mad props’? What is this, 2003?

  • Kendall Sinclair

its better than california girls and teenage dream… although i do like both i think sometimes you need to vent and whats a better way than with music xD

  • karen

I don’t mind Katy Perry, but her voice is truely awful. Very screetchy, off pitch..reminds me of Ashlee Simpson. She sounds okay on the radio, but live, the girl is unbearable.

  • karen

something is off with your comments section. It said I had made a duplicate comment about Katy Perry’s awful screechy voice..nope I hadn’t!

  • karen

sorry, i didn’t realize it posted the first time as I had received an error message.

  • katy

This song came out yesterday too, the same day as her new music video. And it’s alright, not one of her better songs in my opinion. And I don’t think she should have brought up “You Outta Know” because it just made her song seem weaker.

  • Hal

Truly embarrassing high school sophomore lyrics complete with bad (almost) rhymes. She should just stick with her novelty tunes – trying too hard to sound heavy is really annoying.

  • Mike

    Sorry but she’s not alannis

    • jimmy

you have that right…she’s not much of anything!!

But she has Russel…oh what a treat he is!!
