Image Credit: PR Photos; Kevin Mazur/WireImage.comEighties pop icon Boy George has a few questions after reading Lady Gaga‘s Vanity Fair September cover story. In it, she reveals several things, most shockingly that she sometimes uses cocaine. “I won’t lie; it’s occasional,” she says.” And when I say occasional, I mean maybe a couple of times a year.”
In his latest Paper Magazine blog, the former Culture Club star questioned Gaga’s remarks. A former drug addict himself, George wants to know what “occasional” means and why the extravagant talent is confessing such a thing.
“If Lady Gaga were about to be exposed as a drug user I would understand her recent confession to Vanity Fair that she is an ‘occasional’ coke sniffer,” he says in his blog. “But why offer up this information on a whim? Could it be that her use of coke is not so ‘occasional’? As a recovering addict who knows how dangerous ‘occasional’ use is, I can think of no reason for Gaga to reveal this to her young audience.” George went on to say that his mother might have the answer as to why the chart-topping starlet let the ugly cat out of the bag.
“My mum had the best take on this,” he says. “[She said,] ‘She’s reached the stage where she feels untouchable, you all get there—you did, son.’ I can’t argue with that!”
George also added: “One has to wonder how much of a grip Gaga has on things. Up until now she has seemed almost annoyingly professional and focused and this seems out of character! Isn’t saying your an ‘occasional’ drug taker a bit like saying you’re bisexual? That usually means you’re raving!”
What do you think: Should Gaga have kept that info to herself? Is it Boy’s prerogative to question her? Let us know.

I just assume most musicians are on drugs most of the time… who cares?
It gives a has-been a chance to get attention.
By “has been” I do hope that you mean the no talented Caca.
He’s just a has – been looking for attention.
When is Gaga gonna admit he is really a guy? Come on! That is one fugly looking girl!
Oh okay so an ugly girl = man. Great logic you have there.
I second this question. Not a matter of if but when.
LADY GAGA IS UGLY AND HER NOSE WILL FALL OFF
I’m glad she was honest about it, that means she’s more likely to seek treatment than to cover it up like other celebs who kept silent and never sought treatment.
those are actually good points to make. Boy George has a point honestly. I find it weird now that i’m reading this that she would say she’s a occasional cocaine user (who does that?)
because she is pretty untouchable right now. and i hope this occasional use doesn’t spiral out of control. I think Gaga is great and I would hate to see her fall like we’ve seen with people like Britney and lindsay lohan.
I agree.
Agreed, well said!
It could be worse, she could be using New Coke!
Love it.
OMG… for the win… And I Think you just revealed our age!
What are you taking about? I..uh…the Google found that reference for me. Get off my lawn!
“EAT MY SHORTS!”
She said that for the same reason she does things like go to ball games wearing next to nothing and flipping off the crowd, to shock people and get attention.
I love GaGa’s music but I’m starting to grow tired of some of the things she does and says. Sometimes her image just seems like she’s trying to hard or maybe that she lacks respect (I.e. Bra and panties at a Yankee game). I think that her admission is tmi and she should stick to making music.
I totally agree. I am a big fan of her music and even her eccentricities — but this drunk, offensive crap she does in public I can’t respect. I always thought she was smarter than Britney and Lindsay Lohan, and now I know she’s simply not.
Gaga has decided to base her career around being “outrageous,” but the problem with this is that she has to keep topping herself… each new outfit, quote, magazine article, or public appearance has to be crazier than the last. The thing is, she is obviously talented, so she doesn’t need to go this route. I always thought she knew what she was doing and was in control, but I’m beginning to wonder if the fame is more than she can handle.
Perhaps fame is a more powerful drug than cocaine.
wow, people are really overreacting about this. I read it and appreciated her honesty. She’s very transparent about her life and I admire that.
There’s nothing to respect about her. She’s not unique. She tries incredibly too hard to be relevant and original–all of her efforts channel a deranged Christina Aguilera or a cracked out version of Madonna.
I don’t respect her admitting to using drugs–that is not something to be applauded or respected. It just makes her seem pretentious and attention-seeking–which her clothes already do quite well for her. Ewww! I’m so so so sick of her.
I agree 100%. I’ve never gotten the appeal of Lady Gaga. Sure, I’ll sing along with her songs, but everyone thinks she’s sooooo original and all I think when I hear her, is Oh, it’s a new Madonna song!
We need to start telling the truth about drug use. Most people over the age of 40 have used some kind of drug in the past. The 60s and early 70s saw the use of marijuana, LSD, Quaaludes, and mushrooms. The 70s and eighties were the cocaine years. Some people did too much and saw their lives spin out of control. Everyone who experimented didn’t become addicts. Some did. the potency of these drugs today is very different than in the old days.
What is the difference between getting high and getting drunk? Only a question of legality.
Maybe the only thing Gaga did wrong, besides using drugs, is telling the truth.
The difference between getting high and getting drunk depends on the drug. Alcohol, mushrooms, and marijuana aren’t inherently addictive. Cocaine, quaaludes, heroin, and meth are however highly addictive. People don’t stay casual users of those drugs. Those ones also are easy to overdose and lethal.
I believe you have the right to do what you want as long as you aren’t hurting anyone else. I think if more celebs were open about drug use it would show that you can use drugs responsibly as recreation (as Gaga admits she does). I also think we should legalize drugs and tax them to high heaven.
Um, no. If people could use drugs responsibly I would be out of a job
I second that.
WOW. That is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read.
There is only a small percent of the population that could use drugs responsibly, because if it was so easy we have shows like intervention and celebrity rehab. Liz you should probably think a little more critically before you share your ignorance.
Your naivety is just precious.
Liz, when you hear people talk about “legalizing and taxing drugs” they’re usually referring to marijuana. Coke is NOT something people successfully use in a casual or recreational way. And excessive drug use DOES hurt people other than the user (DUH!).
But yeah, what nodnarb said.
KP, I gotta disagree with you on your coke comment. There are puh-lenty of people who use coke recreationally. I mean, the entire disco era was fueled by coke… and most of those people managed to make it out alive.
You make a good point. Maybe it’s cultural. Most of the coke users that I’ve personally known (admittedly, just a few) haven’t fared so well.
I’m with Liz, and I LOVE how when things like this come up NO ONE ever mentions that booze is a drug as well. The biggest difference is that the government makes its money off the taxation of liquor, so its legal…but you constantly hear more people being killed in DUI’s due to drunk drivers than statistics of people killing someone cause they were just messed up on coke. Please don’t attack me defending Liz unless you have something justifiably profound to add to my argument.
How many people do you know in your life that always have that 1 drink too many, that have no self control, and complain the next day or have the hang over from hell? But its ok in their mind cause they didn’t snort anything…its just as bad, just legal, and therefor perceived as tolerable.
@ Phil:
Alcohol is not a dangerous substance when consumed responsibly. In fact, alcohol in moderation can actually be good for you. The problem is the people who can’t properly hold their liquor and know when to say enough or have a designated driver. Alcohol shouldn’t be blamed for that. People who shared your attitude about alcohol over 9 decades ago were responsible for the implementation of Prohibition, and you see how well that worked out. The only truly all-around harmful substance that is legal but shouldn’t be is cigarettes.
Completely agree – legalize, regulate and tax!
@Whatever – I’m sure Liz is the type of person that thinks Lindsay got a harsh deal because she wasn’t hurting anyone. Let her live in her little reality
Get real. How are you going to tax it when it’s sold on the black market? It’s amazing how stupid some people are.
ever hear of prohibition? legalize it and tax it
Sorry but that’ maybe the most moronic comment yet. The act of legalizing and regulating something takes it off the ‘black market.’ It is the fact that drugs are illegal that creates the black market.
Leftist dream, but if coke is taxed high, the illegal market will still exist. No way are drug lords giving up their business without a fight.
They will just move on to a different market, it happened to the mafia. There will always be some drugs that are illegal but still tempting to risk takers. As a FORMER risk taker I can say that you can dabble in coke and pot and never have a problem. I am much older and wiser now and realize that I might have just been lucky when it came to the powder or stopped that stupidity before it did become a problem.
“Use drugs responsibly as recreation.” That’s a foolish statement. Beyond foolish. And if that is your idea of “recreation”, you are sad.
Using “responsible” and “drug use” in the same sentence is about as ridiculous as “weight loss” and “McDonald’s.” If you think you’re responsible in your drug use, you have a far more serious problem than you think.
George: you were an ADDICT. She isn’t. I know many who can do drugs occasionally 2-3x a year without being addicted. You, sir, couldn’t.
Yeah if there’s one word that sums up Lady Gaga it’s restraint.
I’m sure she won’t go over the top with it.
Just because she says she uses 2-3 times a year doesn’t mean it’s true. She probably uses way more than that.
Yes, but does she “occasionally” tie up hookers in her basement?
YES, she does! Let me out!
bwaha
Only two or three times a year.
Lady Gaga needs to shut her mouth about drug use…i focus on the quality of the music when it comes to artists, but for her to say she uses is WACK…all drugs are WACK…cocaine is WACK…and users of drugs will eventually become WACK
This message brought to you by Nancy Reagan. Just say no.
…”AAAAnnnd Cut! Whitney! Scene!
HAHA so funny!!
I’m sure she’ll gag on coke too like Boy George has…takes one to know one (that is all Boy George is saying)…Ocassionally, sniff blowing…yeah right?
Lady Gag(a) is a Karma Chameleon with a PokerFace that goes to the Church of the Poison Mind.
If you read the article. She admits that in the past she had used cocaine and that she does use drugs occasionally, but cannot do cocaine anymore. She also clearly states that she’s never used heroine, so one might deduce that she’s smoking weed every now and again, which isn’t that big a deal.
In this day and age, I dont know that many people that DONT smoke pot on occasion. Its as common as speeding in a 55
She only sniffs coke occasionally because it contains so much high-fructose corn syrup that it’s all she can stand to do!
It does NOT usually mean you’re raving if you say you’re bi-sexual. Boy George is an idiot.
She probably doesn’t even use drugs. She probably just said it to keep the never-ending “things that Gaga did or said” media hype machine going. She wants–CRAVES–attention and this was an easy way for her to get some press. The media and the American public are following her every move (whether real or imagined) and she’s smart enough to know this. Next month she’ll let it slip that she’s a necrophiliac and the media will jump ALL over that. And she’ll just smile and say to herself, “Suckers!”
Everything you just said is true except for the first line. You see her costumes? Ever been to one of her shows? Maybe she holds it together long enough in public to get through the interviews and publicity tours, but there is no way in hell she’s not using. Either way, the unfortunate part is that she tries to glamourize it all and be an “artist” which is unfortunate for the younger crowd who doesn’t quite understand her image and the history behind it. A true artist doesn’t repeatedly call themselves one and wouldn’t even admit that they use in the first place. Not advocating for “true artistry” or whatever, but really, everything this girl does is to shock and get attention. She’s a little Madonna, a little Elton, a little Manson, that’s all…and they’ve all shocked until they can shock no more People will tire eventually.
