Drake holds his own alongside Jay-Z and Trey Songz at NYC's Radio City Music Hall

drakeImage Credit: Roger Kisby/Getty ImagesIt’s hard being a rapper–even if you have songs that wow both peers and millions of fans like Drake, last night’s headliner at a sold-out Radio City Music Hall for the second night in a row–the question is why would more than 5,000 people want to see a rapper perform? They don’t posses the awing vocal prowess of a singer, dance, or even play an instrument. Outside of a select few, rappers just rap on stage.

Well, simply put, people love him. Drake, 23, is rap’s unlikely hero raised way North of hip-hop’s New York birthplace: Toronto, Canada. He’s Jewish, wears his heart on his sleeves, and a coat of confidence. This time last year he was riding high off the success of “Best I Ever Had,” the standout smash from his introspective 2009 So Far Gone mixtape, and performing to a third of the crowd he faced last night. This, his Light Dreams & Nightmares tour, is his first on a stage this big. We know his idol Jay-Z and his heap of hits put on an amazing show. But what of rap’s’ golden child?

Armed only with cuts from Gone and his debut album—this summer’s best rap set, Thank Me Later, Drake strolled onto the stage in cargo pants, black Air Jordans, black sunglasses, and a denim jacket. After coolly running through his “9AM in Dallas,” he ramped things up with “Up All Night” and “Show Me a Good Time.” His style is lively. He sprinted and leapt all over the stage during the choruses he didn’t rap along to. And even when he stood still, he rapped with intensity—as if the lyrics were erupting from his toes out of his mouth, hand viciously twitching like a concentrated jazz hand.

Though his remained high, the audience’s energy didn’t match for most of the night. Apparently unable to stay as excited about Drake’s words as he was to spit them, some just stood and stared while he rapped his verse to Young Jeezy’s “Lose My Mind”—as if waiting for the Atlanta native to step out himself. He didn’t. But spirits were lifted when Brooklyn rapper Fabolous, dipped in all black, came out for “Throw It in the Bag.” More seasoned artists stealing the show became the night’s recurring theme after that. R&B titan Trey Songz awkwardly joined Drake later. The two have several tracks together. Last year they hit hard with 1-2 punches like “Successful” and “Invented Sex.” Instead of performing those, Drake stood and watched Trey take his women, singing his new mid-tempo “Can’t Be Friends.” Then he was off.

But it wasn’t until 10:30pm that the roof was torn off the building. That feat was left to Jay-Z, whose Timberlands stomped in to their “Light Up” collaboration. He got about halfway through that before deciding to make this moment his with the frenetic “On to the Next One.” It was then that I realized what Drake could do with years of more experience on stage. The deafening screams Jay earned are surely what he aspires for. He didn’t own every moment like his guests did.

It was far from a bad show. But like the title of his earliest mixtape, there was clearly room for improvement.

Have you seen Drake perform before? What did you think of his show? Fuse will air the performance on Thanksgiving Eve at 9pm. Plan on watching?

Justin Timberlake and David Fincher on Trent Reznor's 'Social Network' score

Filed under: Movies, Music and tagged: , , ,

social-networkImage Credit: Rob Sheridan; Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotosThe Social Network doesn’t come out until tomorrow, but it’s already a chart topper—in the music world, at least. The movie’s instrumental score, written by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and composer Atticus Ross, is currently at the number one spot on Amazon’s MP3 album chart.  Even better, it’s getting rave reviews from fans, including Social Network star Justin Timberlake.

“The score is the best part about this movie,” says Timberlake, who plays Napster co-founder Sean Parker in the film. “[It's] the most unique and dark and ominous and emotional score that I’ve heard in so long. And if [Reznor] doesn’t get some sort of accolade for that, I will think it’s a travesty.”

So how did director David Fincher get Reznor to score his movie? Turns out they have a history together. READ FULL STORY »

Kanye West vents about leaked music, revokes Internet's free tune privileges

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , ,

Kanye-WestImage Credit: Will Ragozzino/Getty ImagesHappy now, Internet? Yesterday a new Kanye West song called “Lost in the World” leaked online and was promptly posted on tons of music sites. Except that was just an unfinished version of “Lost in the World,” as anyone who listened closely might have noticed. West is so mad about this that he’s calling off his “G.O.O.D. Friday” program of gifting us with a brand-new 100% free song at the end of every week.

“Due to blogs leaking unfinished songs from my actual album I’ve decided to pass of Good Fridays this week,” West tweeted late last night. “It’s messed up that one hacker can mess everything up for everyone… I love to take a year to finish my songs and deliver them to you guys in there most completed form… It would have seemed like since I give free music every week even the lowest form of human being would respect that enough not to leak unfinished songs from my real album…”

He’s got a point there. This guy has been giving us tons of awesome free music lately, and still people feel the need to break into his files and steal works in progress? Greedy, greedy fans. Luckily, it sounds like he’ll be bringing “G.O.O.D. Fridays” back next week, and he later tweeted that he’s been staying in the studio ’til 3 A.M. every night to finish his album as soon as possible.

OCT. 1 UPDATE: West appeared to relent today, tweeting, “For the real hip hop fans… even though I had to shift all my energy to mixing my album [due] to leaks…. I’m trying to still deliver a new Good Friday song 2nt… Let’s pray!!!” Whew.

Did you hear “Lost in the World” when it leaked? (Don’t tell Kanye I said this, but it was pretty dope even in incomplete form.) What do you think of his decision to punish us by skipping “G.O.O.D. Fridays” this week? How much longer can you wait for his album?

Lady Gaga's origins spark another lawsuit

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

Wendy-StarlandImage Credit: David Livingston/Getty Images; Janet Mayer/PR PhotosThe legal controversy over who discovered Lady Gaga rages on. Just weeks after producer Rob Fusari’s multi-million-dollar lawsuit against Gaga and her own counterclaim were both quietly withdrawn, another figure from the star’s early days is going to court. This time it’s a singer named Wendy Starland who is suing Fusari.

In papers filed Sept. 24 in the U.S. District Court for New Jersey, Starland says she’s the one who introduced Fusari to the then-unknown Stefani Germanotta. “In 2005, at a face-to-face meeting in New Jersey, Fusari told Starland that he was searching for a unique female singer, under the age of 25, who could be the female equivalent of the lead singer of the band ‘The Strokes,’” the lawsuit claims. “Fusari then promised Starland that, if she could find and introduce him to such a singer, they would work together to develop the singer and share equally in any revenues earned as a result.” The following year, Starland says, she introduced Fusari to the woman who would soon become the megasuccessful Lady Gaga — and yet she says she’s never seen a penny of those allegedly promised revenues from Fusari.

Fusari’s attorney has not responded to EW’s requests for comment. Til then, what do you think of this suit?

Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine tell us why they believe in Beats headphones -- and what's up with 'Detox'

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

Dr-Dre-headphonesImage Credit: D Dipasupil/FilmMagic.comDr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine are busy men. One is a legendary recording artist and producer, the other runs one of the biggest labels in the music industry. So why are these guys, who surely have cooler places to be, spending their Wednesday afternoon at a Manhattan theater hawking headphones?

“Because this is our life right now,” Dr. Dre tells the Music Mix backstage shortly after he, Iovine, and Monster Cable founder Noel Lee have finished a press conference introducing the latest additions to their Beats by Dr. Dre audio products line. “This is something that we’re really into. We’re really proud of it.” Iovine gets more personal with his answer: “I was a recording engineer when I was 19 years old,” says the Interscope-Geffen-A&M chief. “Sound has been my way into a better life. So sound is as important to me as music…. Without sound and music, I’m still in Brooklyn, working, you know, down on the docks. So it’s very easy for me to show up for this.” READ FULL STORY »

Dr. Dre says he'd be open to working with 'American Idol' contestants

Filed under: Music, News, TV and tagged:

Dr-DreImage Credit: Bryan Bedder/Getty ImagesDr. Dre can afford to be picky about which artists he works with. But with his good pal and Interscope-Geffen-A&M chair Jimmy Iovine joining American Idol as an in-house mentor for the upcoming tenth season, would Dre consider lending his studio talents to a contestant from the show? Sure, if the chemistry was right.

“You know what? It all depends on the artist, if they turn me on or not. That’s all there is to it,” Dr. Dre tells the Music Mix backstage at a Beats by Dr. Dre headphone launch event. “Of course, they have to have a serious talent,” he adds. “I have to be comfortable vibing with them in the studio. And I really like artists that have a story.”

What do you say? Would Dr. Dre and American Idol be a good match?

What song is most likely to make men cry?

Filed under: Music and tagged:

REMImage Credit: Joe Giron/CorbisMusic can make men cry. It’s okay to admit it — I’ve shed a tear or two to a tune in my day. According to a new study by PRS for Music (hat tip: Vulture), the song that most reliably produces this effect for gents is R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts,” followed by Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Yeah, those are some tear-jerkers, all right.

Have any of those songs ever made you weep, dudes? What about any other tunes? We promise we won’t laugh. While you think it over, check out a live performance of “Everybody Hurts” after the jump and see if you can keep your eyes dry. READ FULL STORY »

'America's Got Talent' winner Michael Grimm signs with Epic Records

Filed under: Music and tagged: , ,

Michael-GrimmYou know what they say: If you build it, they will come. So naturally, in today’s reality show-obsessed world, if you win a televised talent competition…you’re likely to get a record deal. In a press release, Epic Records announced the signing of recent America’s Got Talent winner Michael Grimm. The self-described “blue-eyed soul singer” impressed the judges and voters at home with his skillful guitar playing and smooth voice week after week as he covered soul classics like “You Don’t Know Me,” “Let’s Stay Together,” and “When a Man Loves a Woman.” Grimm’s signing follows the path of last season’s AGT winner, country singer Kevin Skinner, who released his debut album Long Ride last September.

In a recent interview, Grimm told EW that he hoped winning America’s Got Talent would allow him to “cut the album [he's] been wanting to cut,” and give him the exposure and promotion necessary to perform beyond his Las Vegas home. “I know the genre, I know the route I want to go on this album, what it looks like, and smells like, and sounds like,” Grimm said. According to Epic, Grimm plans to release a solo album in March 2011.

Grimm is currently rehearsing for the upcoming America’s Got Talent Live, which kicks off this Friday in Oakland, Calif. The tour will travel to 25 cities and feature performances by season 5′s Top 10 contestants, including finalists Prince Poppycock and Jackie Evancho.

Will you be purchasing Grimm’s music come March?
