President Barack Obama says he listens to the Rolling Stones, Miles Davis, and... Lil Wayne in Rolling Stone interview

Obama-musicImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR Photos; Everett Collection; Jerry Livingston/PR PhotosWith the recession officially declared over, President Barack Obama can slide one thing off of his plate and focus on the other 99 he must accomplish. Obviously, he’s a busy guy. But even he finds time to sit back and soak in some tunes. In a new interview with Rolling Stone Obama was asked, for the hundredth time, what is on his iPod. He started of with his regular list of music’s icons.

“I am probably still more heavily weighted toward the music of my childhood than I am the new stuff,” he said. “There’s still a lot of Stevie Wonder, a lot of Bob Dylan, a lot of Rolling Stones, a lot of R&B, a lot of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Those are the old standards.” He did, however, manage to sprinkle in some unexpected names in addition.

“A lot of classical music. I’m not a big opera buff in terms of going to opera, but there are days where Maria Callas is exactly what I need,” he noted. “Thanks to Reggie [Love, the president’s personal aide], my rap palate has greatly improved. Jay-Z used to be sort of what predominated, but now I’ve got a little Nas and a little Lil Wayne and some other stuff.”

So by my tally, this is reason No. 249 why Barack Obama is the coolest president ever. Do you think Bush had an iPod with the kind of variety Obama’s boasts? Actually, do you even think Bush knew how to operate an iPod? What do you think of Barack’s selection? Let us know.

This is why our country is in such bad shape, because people like you have no knowledge of nothing except what ew gives you. Don’t you think it’s sick and ignorant that our President is giving any kind of respect to a convicted felon?

      • tori

        Lighten up it’s just music!

  • Krissy

I think that President Obama has a pretty open mind about things, as evident by his musical selection. So many people don’t venture out of their comfort zone, whether it is regarding music, TV, or views on things like global warming and the economy. A wise person isn’t afraid to be exposed to new things. I think his ability to see pros and cons in multiple views is part of what makes the Democrat’s message so hard to condense into bumper sticker style catchphrases. The GOP is really good with little phrases that sound good but mean nothing.

There is nothing more wrong than seeing a picture of the beautiful Maria Callas next to the piece of human excrement that is Lil Wayne.

    • c

      Human excrement? Really?

      • u

        Really.

      • ry

        really

  • Liz

Note to the author: Bush does have an iPod a few years ago, while being interviewed by Brit Hume, he asked Bush to rattle off the artists onhis iPod… There was country and classical…so I guess this goes against your ‘Bush is uncool ‘ narrative the left brings up to make themselves feel better when their guy Obama is tanking

    • nodnarb

Yeh, and in the same interview, Bush admitted that he didn’t know how to load it himself and had one of his staffers do it. Liz=FAIL

      • J.M.

and yet it’s thanks to Reggie the Aid that Obama has anything cool on his ipod. So, Obama is “aided” in his coolness.

  • Eric Hilkert

I’d like to see him diggin sister Morphine, maybe some girls..black chicks wanna get f…..d all night. Miles davis, really? He couldn’t even know a single Miles tune.

    • Jeanne

Have you guys cecekhd out my dubstep distribution blog yet? I update it like 32 times a day

  • Eric Hilkert

Why stop here? I guess its cool to mention Dylan, what does a young know nothing about everything even have the gaul to mention Dylan and Miles? Wht stop there, what about ’77 dead, or ’71 Dead, or ’69 Dead, How ’bout Carlie Parker? Lil wayne? Boy his range is so broad!! Shows he knows as much about music as he does about running this country. Dylan and Miles really? Maybe he misread the teleprompter.

I think it is great, that President Obama has such varied musical taste. It gives him an open view of the world because he can relate in a way to differnt points of view. Maybe if other government officals and corporate heads can vary their musical taste as well, the country might be able to agree on something because they can relate to different “points of view” as well.

    • Karl

      Ah yes… the Kool-Aid is taking effect…

  • smh

I think it’s so screwed how the President does not get any credit for what he has done! It makes me so mad that he did so much and uninformed people continue to make claims that he has done nothing. Please do your research before opening your mouth and looking like a fool.

    1. OBAMA HAS BROUGHT US OUT OF THE RECESSION! Hello??? That alone is huge. Despite trying to do all of this with an obstructionist party trying to block his every move and then having the audacity to try to take credit for it. It’s disgusting.

    2. He passed historic legislation that saved millions of jobs.

    3. He brought us OUT OF IRAQ – (which was probably the #1 reason why we were in the recession in the first place spending billions per month!)

    4. He passed huge financial reforms.

    5. He catalyzed the huge movement of health care reform.

    6. He got the auto industry back on its feet.

    7. Not only that, he has restored our image around the world.

This is just to name a few. Please do your research before sounding off at the mouth talking about Obama has done “nothing.” I’m an independent (neither Democrat nor Republican) and I can clearly see how hard the President is working. Don’t get brainwashed by Hannity and Rush Limbaugh who have nothing of relevance to say!

    • ry

rock on! Although he did let Goldman and Sachs in through the back door, and up the stakes in Afghan, but I never heard of a president that could do ONE of the good things he accomplished in their first half a term. The guy must be the hardest working person in Washington.

    • Vince from NYC

Theres no use smh all the right wingers hear is blah blah blah when you type that stuff. All they see is a president who doesn’t look like them and that scares the crap out of them. It’s funny I see and hear people blaming him for the bad economy and unemployment. Liek he will be able to fix in 2 years what the right destryoed over the course of 8..

    • Elle

Thank you! I couldn’t agree with you more! President Obama is only a man. He is not superman, or the second coming of Jesus Christ. He inherited a mess and in a very short time has started to turn our country around. How much more could have been acheived if he didn’t have such opposition. Some people have no staying power at all. Now is not the time to jump ship. We should all stay the course. God bless America!

  • Reality Check

Bawreck Hussein doesn’t know the first thing about Lil Wayne or Miles Davis or Bob Dylan. “Gee, I’m Doing an interview with Rolling Stone. They might just ask me about music. Maybe I’ll have my aide prepare a list of artists ‘I like’ that will have morons singing of my hipness.”
I don’t care if our Pres. listens solely to Kenny G and Billy Ray Cyrus as long as he governs this country capably.

  • andrew

This is the dumbest thing Ive ever read. We truely have millions of suffering Americans that he needs to be focused on instead of trying to become a “cool” president. And the people adding ill vote for him since he listens to Lil Wayne, come on man really? That type of stupidity is exactly why we are in this mess to begin with. Come on America get smart.

    • loisgirl

so why are you reading EW online this is an ENTERTAINMENT magazine, not the NY Times really!!

    • Vince from NYC

Andrew your are the type of stupidity you talk about. People were obviously joking when they said they’d vote for him because he listens to Lil Wayne. Did you read the article or skim it? The author cleary states that Obama finds time to take in some tunes while fixing the country.. Besides the mess we’re in is the result of 8 years of catering to the rich and loosening government controls on every sector. But you can’t say Gov’t regulations are good or you might be called a socialist.

Credibility drops with every rapper in the iPod.

    • ray

      Gay

  • Jody

I guess Taylor Swift would make him seem far more credible.

  • derby

he’s the coolest president ever? great. he’s running the country into the ground, but he’s so cool b/c he likes rap music. you are such an ignorant, liberal idiot brad. so sad.

you should really veer off into political reporting. really.

  • Chuck

I’ve read this site daily for years now. I don’t know if it’s because I am getting older, but I have been terribly disappointed in some of the new contributors. They just come off as uninformed, but using the crutch of typical pop culture references to “get away with it.”

This article and author is a prime example. I could not believe the first few words: “With the recession is officially declared over” Really, Brad Wete, really? The jokes at the end are so lame: Reason # and questioning whether Bush could even operate an iPod. Brad needs a reality check that makes him realize that there’s a whole other world out there besides the fun atmosphere of EW offices.

    • smh

Umm…actually the recession has been declared over as of June of 2009, despite the remaining issue of unemployment…so your point is?…

      • Chuck

What? Declared over by who? Stop shaking your head and look around.

  • PiratesDaughter

ugh. who wrote this article and doesn’t remember the fact that a similar amount of music selections from Bush’s ipod was also released? I know this isn’t an important article but if you can’t get the little things right…
