Image Credit: Robert McKnightIt’s been a good while since we last heard from Cake. So it’s fitting that Showroom of Compassion, the California alt-rockers’ first full-length since 2004, will feature a song called “Long Time.” The album won’t be out til Jan. 11, 2011, but we just so happen to have an exclusive stream of “Long Time” right here on the Music Mix.
Click through to the jump to hear “Long Time” now. It’s vintage Cake, with festive brass, chipper synths, and itchy guitars accompanying lead singer John McCrea’s deadpan vocals.
Snappy little tune, no? If you like it, consider pre-ordering Showroom of Compassion from Cake’s official site. Then let us know whether you’re looking forward to fresh Cake in January.

Michael Slezak wondered in 2006 why Cake’s “Wheels” wasn’t a bigger hit

Can’t wait for the album to drop. Where are they touring, must see them.
There are tons of dates coming up in Cali. Check their website. I’m seeing them at the Fillmore in SF in February. I can’t wait!!
I already got tix to the show in Boca. Psyched!
This is so cool that EW is covering Cake. It’s nice to see this magazine acknowledge that “Entertainment” encompasses more than Glee and the usual suspects pop album of the week.
Long live true alternative music!
So excited for this album! I hope they do a tour for it, because they are one of the bands I must see before I die
You won’t be disappointed! I took in their live show back in college at a small venue and it was one of the most enjoyable concerts ever!
So excited for their new album!! Pressure Chief was sooo good. They have actually been touring in smaller venues for the past few years. I caught them last year (and I live in Rochester, NY, so it’s not like I’m in a major metro area…) and they were great! (If you don’t mind John McCrea using part of the show as a political bandstand…)
McCrea really doesn’t use any of his show as a political bandstage. He makes sarcastic remarks towards everything and everyone.
Yes! So excited about some Cake….one of my fav bands of all time! I hadn’t even realized it had been 6 years since their last album…long over-do doesn’t even begin to cover it.
I’ve already pre-ordered the album. Cake is my all time fave band. I can’t wait to see them at the Fillmore in SF. Plus they will be on Conan tonight. Woohoo!!
Still nice to see this band around & making good music w/ their signature sound.
Why does this song have beat machine drums instead of real drums? Did their drummer quit? The drums on this song sound horrible
they actually have drummer Paulo Baldi back he’s badass…
i preordered the cd set as soon as Cake announced it. BEYOND stoked for the new album. i’m hoping to catch them in DC this April, i missed them in Richmond VA a few years ago and have been kicking myself since.
I love CAKE. My favorite band. They are a happy spot to any day. I have had this for a ring tone on my phone for almost a year! Glad to finally hear it and to get the album in January! Thank you CAKE for being such a consistently GREAT band!
So looking forward to this album. I love Cake! I saw them in Dallas during the Swine Flu craziness, and they rocked.
Yay! January just got ALOT hotter!
I ordered my copy of this Cd bout a month ago. Cake is one of my fav bands ever and I´m sooooo excited about their new project!!!! Sadly it won´t be here until early February but well, I´m sure it will be well worth.
Hope I have the chance to see them live
Cake is back.
Thanks to EW for streaming the song hear for the fanatics.
Looking forward to hearing the entire new record and seeing them in concert very soon.
Love the horns in this song and the classic Cake sound is front and center.
