Britney Spears' 'Hold It Against' me breaks radio records, tops iTunes-will she perform at the Grammys, too?

hold-it-against-meOops, she did it again. Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me,” leaked Monday and officially released on Tuesday, shot straight to no. 1 on iTunes and also set a new bar for first-day radio spins, according to a statement released by her label.

Says industry analyst Kevin McCabe (via MTV), “Top-40 outlets across the country immediately put ‘Hold It Against Me’ in rotation and received instant-reaction airplay at America’s most-influential stations, including Z100 and WXRK in New York and KIIS and KAMP in Los Angeles”—not entirely an unexpected result for a new Britney single, considering her last two, “2008’s “Womanizer” and 2009’s “3,” performed similarly well, and also jumped quickly to the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Perez Hilton is also reporting today that Spears will be performing at the upcoming Grammys ceremony in Los Angeles on Feb. 13, though her rep will not confirm the news.

Go Britney!!! 2011 is the year of the Queen, Britney Spears. Today is the 12 year anniversary of the release of the album Baby one more time. Time sure does fly.

    • Bob

The music industry hit a new low this week. Taylor Swift will be #1 on the Billboard 200. But she sould less the 58,000 units. A new record low for the industry.

      • Bob

        “sold” not sould sorry

      • Phil

Agreed…now if Britney’s album was done and it was coming out this week and could save the industry’s duldrum January sales, then there would be an article worth writing. I dont understand how the record labels do nothing to try & change their sales models. I get that they release all their big names during the 4th quarter (Nov. & Dec.) but how they dont try and hold on to one big one, and release it in january and not only own the Billboard 200, but start January off with a much needed sales boost is beyond me. I mean I get no one likes change, but if they dont risk it one year, the sales decline after the holidays is just going to continue to get worse, esp. with no new major releases until March (unless you count Ricky Martin on Feb. 1st which isnt going to even break 100,000 simply cause that first single sucks). But then of course everyone will be delighted come march when Britney sells x amount of records her first week, as the first big sales week of 2011….Honestly, if the album is done, JIVE, make the release date sooner and bottle up that lightning while you can.

I remember when Baby One More Time came out in January of 1999 and really took off. It feels full circle that Hold It Against Me has taken off on radio and Itunes. I think in two ways, people still remember when her album came out that January in 1999 and wanted to do the same with making her new single take off in 2011!!! The January hit making formula always works for Britney!!!!

    • Sink

I like Britney but this is a cliche riddled tuneless mess.

    • Elena

Wow…the # 1 and the # 1 single are both by blonde, young “singers” who wouldn’t know a note in tune if it slapped them in the face. Sad indeed.

  • Phil

Technically the Grammys are the only televised music event from now until the summer when MJTv has the Movie Awards so this would be Brit’s only chance to ‘perform’ the track in front of an audience before then.
Now…we all now the Grammys are trying to skew younger these days, but in years past, they’ve been known to have collaborations between younger artists and older…I’m not entirely sure if they’d attempt to do this, but we all know Brit will NOT be singing live, so…I’m sure there are a bunch of folks who are going to think its a bad idea for her to do this mostly dance track at the I’d assume, it would be another song, and this one.

    • B-

Britney performed at the Grammy’s before and sang live.

    • SaraJ

I agree, it seems fine she’d want to perform it now. I just hope she really sings *crosses fingers*
Come on Brit you can do it. It is the Grammy’s, after all.

    • anya

Actually if she doesn’t sing it live, this song would be a good choice, since she could really do some interesting dancing to this one, so we’d get some performance.

      • E

I don’t know why everyone is so caught up in Britney singing live. If she’s on the Grammys I want a good Britney performance. And that doesn’t really include her singing live especially not a banging, club-ready lead single.

      • Miguel

@E I agree. It is very rare that the Grammys would let Britney perform a club-banging single, it would be better for the VMAs or MTV Movie awards. They are very few artists that can sing live and dance at the same time. I really enjoyed the 2000 MVAs performance.

  • Deborah

    Love the song

  • n

Go Brit, go! Love the song, glad to see B back on track! Get ‘em girl!

  • Mauro

Anybody can tell me who can reach #1 in 17 countries????

    The answer is NOBODY!!!

    • Willi

      • Bhausaheb

and I thought I was one of the few who think Britney is geinttg a bad (mother) rap. At least she hasn’t shut the car door on her kid’s finger. Guess the media would have a ball with that. All those photographers when she is simply walking from the building to a car? Egad. I guess neither the photographers nor Britney have a life of their own. The saga continues

    • Tye-Grr

      And now Britney.

    • Larry David

      Robbie Williams.

      Look it up.

    • Elena

Madonna, Cher, and Shakira have all had songs that have reached # 1 in over 35 countries.

    • Rich

Los Del Rio (“Macarena”)… Lou Bega (“Mambo #5″)…. Your point exactly? That multiple countries have terrible taste in music??

    • Kelcie

      OWNED. :/

    • fancypants

      Michael Jackson.

      • Said

Such a great song. Britney deserves this success! Move over, Gaga!!

    • n

This made me laugh inside. I love Gaga, but B paved the way for mediocre pop and I always love her for that. ; )

      • Sandy

        mediocre? get over yourself.

      • fancypants

No, mediocre is the right word. Get over yourself Sandy.

I condemn .Private shloud be private. Public shloud be public. And get yer thieving hands off my tax money paid towards the Public Good: if I wanted to adopt someone else’s healthcare, it wouldn’t be an Affluent Australian Aspirational. If you can’t afford private at non-subsidised prices, don’t expect me to pay. And if you don’t find Medicare service adequate, then lobby for an increased Medicare levy. For-profit healthcare is a sin, anyway.BTW Ann Coulter is possibly another XYY woman, like a certain erstwhile British PM Or maybe, the Adam’s apple is actually a Heinleinian Puppet Master

    • Elle

Your photo album is beautiful. I escpaielly enjoyed your dance photos since they showed how much fun you were having on your first dance and thru out the reception. Hope your married life finds you dancing thru the challenges as well as the good times.Your friend and teacher,Roxana

This song is such a letdown compared to “3” or Womanizer.

    • Kelcie

I think you need to give Hold It Against Me another listen. It’s better than 3 and probably just as good as Womanizer.

    • Jhozelly

Great review. Glad to see Brit back in the zone’ again. She defeintily doesn’t dance as sharp or as much as in her pre-2004 days, but oh well. I’m just glad she’s back!

    • Kim

I’m so happy you weren’t hurt! That looks like rough damage (and copmletely LOL’d at your license plate blackout with sad faces!! Too funny!). I was hit by a drunk driver TWICE! Once time my car flipped three times and was clearly totaled and the other time it wasn’t as bad but my car was totaled then too when a DD hits you (I have found) insurance companies are quick to get you off their back and cut you a check! Hopefully you will get your car looking brand stinkin’ new in no time! Keeping my fingers crossed!AND I AM LOVING YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS! Have a very great and relaxing weekend!XOXOStephanie @ Blonde Highlights recently posted..

Is anyone really surprised? Britney always rules the music scene when she puts something new out. That’s why she’s the legend she is. Can’t wait for the album…which will be another #1 !

  • Catlin

    The song isn’t that great.

  • PN

Remarkable that Britney Spears’ Hold It Against Me has taken off that quick on radio stations! I think I might be hearing it in my area any time soon! I like it better than 3 and just as much as Womanizer, Circus and any of her hits in the past decade. Lastly, back to Max Martin!!!! He did Britney’s very first hit in 1999 and it feels full circle that her new single took off this quick in one day!!!!!

  • Dan

    Get it, Gurl!

    All hail Godney.

  • anya

This isn’t surprising since it’s practically the only new pop song from a major artist since November, aside from Avril Lavignes’s new song, which also was released on Itunes this week. I’m just happy to have some new music during this time of year.
