In an extremely slow week for album releases, Cake’s Showroom of Compassion lands atop the Billboard 200 albums chart, selling just 44,000 copies in its first week. It’s the lowest selling No. 1 album in SoundScan’s 20-year tracking history. Cage the Elephant’s Thank You Happy Birthday comes in second with 39,000 copies sold, while Taylor Swift lands in the third spot selling another 35,000 copies of Speak Now. Check out the full top 10 after the jump.

Well at least that’s a breather that new January 2011 released albums would hit No. 1 and 2 on the album charts. It can’t be Taylor Swift week after week and the other new albums being left out. Most of the albums on the chart are albums that people have already bought so that might be why the sales are lower than usual.
Great news for Cake and Cage The Elephant. Awful news for the music industry. It would be nice to blame last week’s winter weather on bad sales… but since there are few CD retailers left, that means online sales are crapping out too. Not good.
