Is it really such a hassle to be in a perennially hip and critically acclaimed rock band? Apparently so. Just last week The White Stripes announced that they are calling it quits. Now LCD Soundsystem have posted a message on their official website declaring their imminent retirement from the live circuit.
“good people of earth,” begins the message, “lcd soundsystem are playing madison square garden on april 2nd, and it will be our last show ever. we are retiring from the game. gettin’ out. movin’ on. but for just one more night, we will be playing with friends and family for nearly 3 hours–playing stuff we’ve never played before and going out with a bang. and we’d like you to be there. if you would, we’d love it if people all came in white. or black. or black and white. and come ready to have fun, please. and come early, as the festivities will be opened by our favorites, liquid liquid. yes: liquid liquid. if it’s a funeral, let’s have the best funeral ever!!!”
You can check out the LCD website for ticket info.
Will you be attending this funeral party? Or do you have a favorite memory of seeing James Murphy and crew? Let us know!

LCD Soundsystem get hazed in ‘Drunk Girls’ video

They were losing their edge, anyways…
(But I’ll be there.)
lol
I’m from Brazil, so I won’t be going to Madison Square Garden.
They are playing in Sao Paulo one last time in 2 weeks though, and I can’t wait! I love them so much, so it’s bittersweet that I’ll be seeing a band that feels like the soundtrack of my generation for the last.
I’ll dance, but I might (definitely) cry. So excited!
New Yorkers, I wish you the best concert ever, and the mostra funny you could have at a funeral. I wish I could be there too, I know it will be unforgettable.
*most fun, stupid cellphone…
They only had one good song. “Tribulations”.
Not really surprising considering James Murphy has been saying for the better part of the year that the tour for “This Is Happening” was going to be the last for LCD Soundsystem. Heck, when you play the CD, if your stereo has a text display, it reads “Last Album” (no kidding)! Still, it’s a drag that they’re shutting down touring and probably recording too. But if they feel they’ve reached their pinnacle, than I guess it is best to go out on top. One thing is for certain: like critically-acclaimed though commercial underrated bands like Pavement and The Velvet Underground, LCD Soundsystem’s legacy will likely be very positive and highly influential.
I’m sure this will be shocking to their fans, but I’ve always found them a bit boring live. Unlike White Stripes who were one of the best live bands I’ve seen!
hai what r u doing ?
Sad, but expected. This farewell has been a year in the making…too bad I’m hundreds of miles away from NY, or I’d be there in a heartbeat. Fans can take consolation in the fact that while LCD Soundsystem is officially retiring, Murphy has said he will continue to make music for other projects and that they are all open to the idea of getting back together every now and again for special shows/events. It just sucks that two of the decade’s great acts have called it quits in the same week.
Love u
This was expected, but still sad nonetheless. I’ve loved every album and they put on one of the best shows I’ve seen. Looking forward to what Murphy produces next.
LCD fans were aware of this a long time ago, as several have pointed out here. It is a shame, as they put on one of the greatest live shows I have seen in my life when they stopped in Miami Beach. My wife and I were buzzing for days afterward. It was a true high experience on music alone.
Well thats what Perry said about Jane’s Addiction and Jane’s has been back a few times over the years…just sayin.
Just devastated.. only seen you guys twice.. I guess BDO 2011 was my last time jumping to LCD… maybe one more tour in the future…….. (tears)
