Jennifer Hudson says new album covers her 'four different lives'

Jennifer-Hudson-OscarsImage Credit: Rick Rowell/ABCSinging and acting talent Jennifer Hudson has plenty on her plate. And judging by her newly slimmed figure, hardly any of it is topped with food.

In addition to promoting her upcoming album, Hudson attended the 83rd Academy Awards last night. The 2007 Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress in Dreamgirls was on hand as a presenter last night, and on the pre-show red carpet, the American Idol alum told EW a bit about the meaning behind her forthcoming I Remember Me, out March 22.

Hudson, whose mother, brother, and young nephew were murdered by her sister’s estranged husband in October of 2008, used the album the recall the things and people she’s lost. “I named it I Remember Me because I feel like in 29 years I have lead over four different lives,” she said. “And the album is helping to remember the old stuff and celebrate the new. It is a disc of everything I’ve been through. I don’t have much from my old stuff to grasp at, so the only way I remember me is from my voice or the scar on my hand. That’s a part of me an I want to remember it all, every minute.”

Though it’s hard to pick just one, she said her cover of Brooks & Dunn’ s “Believe” is one of her favorites on the record. “It has a gospel inspirational feel,” she said. “It made the album feel complete. I sang it for Brooks & Dunn at their farewell concert and I fell in love with the song that night. I had to have it on the album and I sent my whole team on a mission to get it. Luckily, we were successful and I was able to record it and really put the Jennifer Hudson spin on it.”

I wish she would forget about being a mainstream R&B artist and concentrate on just releasing excellent music and let the listeners catch up to her –– like with what Adele has done.

You know what I have to agree with you because Jen is unfortunately competing with today`s R&B/pop artist such as Rihanna, Ciara, Katy Perry, etc. Jen is in a class all her own because she has a powerful voice. I agree totally with the Adele comment. Jenn is a traditional type R&B artist rather than contemporary R&B.

I totally agree with you. Adele is incredible and so is Jennifer. I’d love to see Jennifer tackle traditional R & B. I really think it would create an even bigger fanbase.

I totally agree with the Adele comment.

I hope she doesn’t have to depend on the trendy and slick R&B sounds too much and focus on a more traditional sound at or similar to what Adele is doing on her album. Maybe in future albums Jennifer will attempt that. But what she’s doing now is great.

I am really looking forward to hearing Jennifer’s new music. I love the single, grammatically incorrect and all.

I can’t wait to buy her album. Her voice is so soulful and loud. I have always thought she is amazing. Out of all the contestants from American Idol she is my favorite. Jacob Lusk who is on American Idol this year has a loud and amazing voice like Jennifer. I hope Jacob goes far in the competition.

Big J-Hud fan and she looked beautiful last night. I`ll buy her album on the 1st day. Go Jen!

I agree on the Adele comments. Jennifer, unfortunately, is trying to compete with contemporary singers when she shouldn’t. Her big voice was made for traditional r&B, and sadly, her music bores me to tears.

J-Hud`s song `Where You At` has grown on me, because R. Kelly can make some good R&B ballads. On a future album she needs to hook up with Raphael Saadiq, his sound is retro yet current R&B, or maybe the producers of Amy Winehouse `Back to Black` album or Adele`s producers.

When I saw that R. Kelly produced that Jennifer Hudson song, I went, Yes!!!! They’re both from Chicago, and I could just imagine R. Kelly’s smooth ballad grooves under her voice! It sounded great when I heard it! I hope she does land Raphael Saadiq. She did get Ryan Tedder on her album, who was also on Adele’s new one. So she’s even with everybody.

I wish Jen well and I would advise her to never get rid of her PR team. People just seem to like her and you cannot buy that kind of favor. I’ve never seen anything like it.

I’m really looking forward to Jennifer Hudson’s new album on March 22nd! As well as her take of the song Believe.
