Tiny body, old soul: Watch below as ten-year-old Brit Connie Talbot sings her small heart (and big lungs) out, a pocket Adele just hanging out under the stairs at home—apparently, pretty standard production values at the Talbot house—and ripping through the 22-year-old U.K. superstar’s torchy, wrenching ballad, with just a backing piano track and a blue boutonnier for company:
You may recognize Connie from her time on Britain’s Got Talent—as a gap-toothed 6-year-old back in 2007, she drew rare raves from Simon “Crankypants” Cowell with her rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and ultimately placed second overall.
Is 10 the new 20, in pop-star years? Do precocious moppets like Talbot and Willow Smith fascinate you, or kind of freak you out? (Thanks to NYmag.com for the link.)

They freak me out. Listen to this song! The problem with these super-talented CHILDREN is that they sing real songs like this that are too old, too mature for them. It creeps me out to hear a 10-year-old sing about heartbreak. Disney songs or something? Sure. That would be fine and wouldn’t weird me out. But because they’re so good, they sing these deep, powerful songs because they vocally CAN, and my sense of discomfort at the wrongness of the situation gets in the way of my appreciation for what is admittedly an example of amazing talent. (So I don’t really mind Willow Smith – whipping hair seems pretty appropriate for a kid.)
She’s amazing and TallPeopleMatch was brilliant
I mean, she’s a good little singer and all, but I really don’t think a 10-year-old should be singing a song like this one.
love this song, hate this version. the fact she’s smiling throughout the song indicates she has no idea what she’s singing about. maybe “sand and water” by beth nielsen chapman can be her next cover? or “rehab” by amy winehouse?
She’s smiling because she messed up in those parts of the song; like when she says “breeze” instead of “haze” or when she almost finished the song early. She’s laughing because she goofed.
I totally agree with Kat & Rob. She’s a great singer but this it is completely inappropriate for her to be singing this song. Let’s hear it again in 8 years….
so what do you want them to sing i’m a little tea pot or something? i see nothing wrong with her singing this. not to mention the fact that she does so beautifully.
I agree with darsiekei. Youth songs don’t have the full range that adult songs have where she can show her true talents. And besides, there aren’t any curse words or dirty meanings in the song. It’s about love and she doesn’t get it completely at her age anyway. Quit being so critical!!!
great voice but her singing this song freak me out.
I would buy this 10 year olds album if she had one…
Connie has 3 CDs out
“Over The Rainbow”, “Connie Talbot’s Christmas Album”, and “Holiday Magic”
there is no point in singing a song if you have no connection to or comprehension of the lyrics and that’s the problem with this girl and this version even though her voice is great.
Make me feel inadequate
I prefer her voice to Adele’s myself, but she really needs a few more years to get the emotion down. Still, listen without the video, and it is pretty incredible.
who really cares if she knows what she’s singing about she’s absolutely AMAZINGGGGG
I agree with @Emily. What she is singing is not that crazy of a song for an 10 year old. She sounds amazing!
I think she does a lovely job for being 10 years old, but the emotional connection is lacking and that is what makes this song so much more beautiful is the fact that when Adele sings it it is coming from her soul. Which does come from age and experience. But hats off I wish I sounded that good singing along to it in my car!
By the way for all you people complaining the song is “too mature”, would you prefer something more age appropriate like the awful “Friday”? At least she is learning about good songwriting while she is at it.
She loves the song, probably sang along with it a few times and recorded it with little practice in her hallway. Can you imagine what it would be like in a studio with all those takes?
Regardless of the song lyrics and her not understanding, she sings her FACE OFF. She’s amazing and Willow Smith has no business being mentioned in the same sentence honestly. It’s not like she’s singing “Teenage Dream”. Even though she doesn’t have the “emotional connection” to the song, the soul in her voice makes up for it. She loves Adele and she’s well on her way to giving her a run for her money.
