Beyonce reveals album title, talks about splitting with dad manager in new interview

Beyoncé looks typically fancé on the brand-new cover of Billboard magazine (see her Dandridge-meets-disco look here).

The title of her upcoming album, though, is decidedly basic: It’s 4, as in … yes, her fourth solo album. But she says it has other significance, too: “We all have special numbers in our lives, and 4 is that for me. It’s the day I was born. My mother’s birthday, and a lot of my friends’ birthdays, are on the fourth; April 4 is my wedding date.”

Also revealed in the interview?

* Then-boyfriend Jay-Z almost wasn’t originally supposed to appear on her 2003 smash “Crazy In Love”: “I asked Jay to get on the song the night before I had to turn my album in—thank God he did. It still never gets old, no matter how many times I sing it.

* She took a chance on 4‘s Major Lazer-sampling first single “Run the World (Girls)”: “It’s definitely riskier than something a bit more…simple. I just heard the track and loved that it was so different: it felt a bit African, a bit electronic and futuristic. It reminded me of what I love, which is mixing different cultures and eras—things that typically don’t go together—to create a new sound. I can never be safe; I always try and go against the grain. As soon as I accomplish one thing, I just set a higher goal. That’s how I’ve gotten to where I am.”

* 4‘s musical inspiration came from all over: “I recorded more than 60 songs,” she says. “Everything I ever wanted to try, I just did it. I started off being inspired by [Afrobeat music pioneer] Fela Kuti. I actually worked with the band from “Fela!” [the hit Broadway musical based on his life] for a couple of days, just to get the feel for the soul and heart of his music; it’s so sexy, and has a great groove you get lost in … I also found a lot of inspiration in ’90s R&B, Earth, Wind & Fire, DeBarge, Lionel Richie, Teena Marie… I listened to a lot of Jackson 5 and New Edition, but also Adele, Florence + the Machine, and Prince.”

* Her dad is no longer her manager, but there’s no bad blood there: “It’s not that anything bad happened between us. My family has my support always, and they support me, but when you’ve been working with the same people for 15 years, it’s natural to eventually have your own ideas … We were at a point where we’d learned so much from each other, and now it’s exciting for me to do this on my own and hire my own team. I’ve started managing myself.”

* She’s thrilled to be working on the Star Is Born remake: “It’s a dream come true; I’m still in shock that it’s really going to happen. Clint Eastwood is clearly the absolute best, and I’m so honored and humbled. I was in no rush to do another movie unless it was the right film, and I didn’t even want to touch A Star is Born unless it was with him. I actually learned that this project was in existence, and kind of claimed it. I want to get to work right now!”

* Taking time off made her ready for the next step: “I’m approaching 30, and finally took a break in my life, which I’ve never had. I took more than a year off: I traveled around, spent time with my husband, woke up in my own bed, ate whatever I wanted, went to museums and Broadway plays, watched documentaries, and just had life experiences. I never get to go to concerts because I’m usually performing, so I saw so many shows—great bands, like Muse and Rage Against the Machine, that also inspired the album. There were a lot of artists I’d never been exposed to: I’m like a sponge and soak everything up, and I learned so much from watching these great performers.”

The final word: “Having time to grow as a human being was really inspiring, and gave me a lot to pull from. I’m excited about growing: I can just have fun, and the artistic freedom to do whatever I want. At this point, I really know who I am, and don’t feel like I have to put myself in a box. I’m not afraid of taking risks – no one can define me.”

Beyonce’ USED to be a better talent than most. With her new song, she is clearly intimidated by Gaga – and rather than stay true to what Beyonce’ does best, she’s doing a pathetic copy of Gaga (who has always been a pathetic copy of Madonna- long before Born This Way). I have never seen one artist this intimidated by another, since Pink was intimidated by Christina Aguilera. I get it – Beyonce’s jealous of Lady Gaga, so she tried to put out a Gaga-like song to show she can do it better – oops, except that it isn’t doing very well at all.

Wait, so this album is inspired by Afrobeat, Lionel Richie, New Edition, Prince, Adele, Florence + the Machine, Muse, and Rage Against the Machine? Sounds like a hot mess.

    • True Blue

She said she attended Muse and RATM concerts, she didn’t say they influenced her album. And I didn’t see anything about New Edition.

      • Jason

Read the Article True Blue (instead of doing what 99% of the kids on the net do- comment on the title without reading) – she said exactly that:

“I never get to go to concerts because I’m usually performing, so I saw so many shows—great bands, like Muse and Rage Against the Machine, that also inspired the album”

      • Jason

wow True- you really are just a non-article-reading fool, aren’t you?!

“I listened to a lot of Jackson 5 and New Edition, but also Adele, Florence + the Machine, and Prince.”

    • True Blue

I stand corrected, turns out they did. Well if it’s done right it’s hardly guaranteed to be a hot mess. You’d be surprised if you know what inspired Florence + The Machine’s “Drumming Song”.

  • Ziggy

She sounds really confident and excited. I hope that translates into a fresh sound for her b/c it would be sad to see her churn out carbon copies of what’s been popular since she was on a break. Her voice is amazing, I look forward to see what she does on “4”

    • Bush jr

Bey looks like a middle-aged homeless lady!

  • Tim

She is about to KILL it. I cant wait for the video and new album. A lot of people were doubting her but she is the best and she is once again about to show everyone who the QUEEN is.

    • fancypants

I hope so. I was underwhelmed by Run the World (Girls), so I hope everything she releases next will be great.

      • Edge of Glory

        who cares?

      • OMG

        Edge of Garbage! :(

      • True Blue

        Me too.

      • @Edge of Glory

        Stop asking stupid questions.

    • Gaga4Ever

Oh daddy little girl no longer has the help? Good, no more Grammy then :)

  • Chichi

4 is also the number of people who bought that hot mess of a single she has out now.

    • HD

      It stings because it’s true.

    • Gaga4Ever

      FLop..Flopp …Flopppp

      • Shake It

Gaga is increasingly irrelevant pop tart.

      • Bush jr

        Gaga’s fans are VILE !!!!

  • Dee Jones

I`m more upset about the remake of `A Star is Born`. I gotta say Beyonce is not a good actress. she tries but just can`t cut it. Plus another musical! Just concentrate on music.

    • fancypants

I agree. I love Beyonce’s music and would pay to see her perform live but she is not a good actress and she’s taking roles away from talented black actresses who don’t get enough recognition.

  • Dee Jones

Also Ms.B wants an Oscar so bad she can taste it. She should take acting classes, ain`t nothing wrong with that..

    • Jason

well yeah, everyone all but guaranteed her one for Dreamgirls – who knew no one would care she was in the film by the end!

  • Tim

I think Clint will bring the best out of her. He is the best in the business so he wont settle for anything but the best. Also Run The World is a great song. I think it is such a departure for her and people were expecting something else. I loved it from the start but once the video is released the song will grow on people.

    • fancypants

Clint has made missteps. Every director, no matter how accomplished, has. Exhibit A: Hereafter.

  • Michael

She has a lot to prove again. Her latest song Girls (Run The World) was really poor. She really wasted a lot of energy and time on herself. Hopefully, she can regain her own footing.

  • LilY Gaga

She must have a stupid fans :(

    • Bey Year 2011

Please Madonna Xerox Gaga…put your hate somewhere else. Lame!

    • STFU

and you are not that smart either!

  • Qeesya Says

Please more over Rihanna, Britney and Gaga!

  • OMG

You just keep getting better Bey. An inspiration, show’s age is just an attitude. You look better than most 23 year olds @ Lady GagGag

  • raine33

love her, decent nice woman, may god bless her

  • True Blue

I really hope the album kicks some SERIOUS ass. I’m not writing it off based on one bad lead single, and the snippet for “Until The End Of Time” is quite promising. But all the influences she named (especially Florence + The Machine and Adele, LOVE them!) are nothing short of spectacular, let’s hope the album will be the same.

  • Maureen

Who run the world? Beyonce! ;)
