Courtney Love talks sex, drugs, and allegedly getting blamed for 'the downfall of Def Leppard' in (possibly) craziest interview to date

Courtney Love has always been a quote machine.

But I’m hard-pressed to think of an interview of hers quite as entertainingly bonkers as the two-part epic that addiction website The Fix has just published, in which the singer-actress discusses her numerous drug problems, her sex life, and a boatload of celebrity acquaintances. You’ll find a clutch of choice quotes below, but the interview is well worth checking out in full. It’s not every day someone name checks Jimmy Iovine, Tesla (the rock band, not the pioneering electrical engineer), and Carl Jung in almost the same breath.

“You couldn’t pay me a billion dollars to take marijuana. I don’t really like coke anymore. I’m scared of ecstasy. The one drug I’d like to try one day is Ayahuasca, which should be mandatory for everybody. It’s apparently this crazy tea that gives you these intense hallucinations. Everyone who takes it sees a wise old black man who takes you on a wild journey. I’m not going to name names, but everyone who takes it sees the same black guy. I’m not kidding you. Everyone!”

“Kicking heroin really sucked. Kicking coke was much easier. The truth is, cocaine was not a good look for me. If you Google me, there’s a period of time when you can clearly tell that I’m just flying on blow, it’s quite apparent.”

“After I stopped doing drugs I started to f— like a bunny! Before that I suffered from years of celibacy. I was on this whole Morrissey kick, no masturbation, no romance, no nothing! The store was completely closed.”

“A few months ago, at a party in Hollywood, Scarlett Johansson did a pretty spot-on imitation of me. She wrapped a bandage around her boobs and tumbled down a flight of stairs with a bottle of Jack Daniels in her hands. But the truth is I’ve never had a drop of Jack Daniels.

“Jimmy Iovine even framed my amends letter to him in the lobby of Interscope Records. My letter said, ‘Dear Jimmy, I was on a whole lot of drugs for a few years and I sued you. I feel like a retard, I’m sorry, please accept my apology.’ He was cool with it. I then tried to make similar amends to my old manager, Peter Mensch, which didn’t turn out quite as well. Peter immediately called me up and screamed at me for two hours. He blamed me for the downfall of Def Leppard, the downfall of Tesla and for not winning an Oscar. It was a valuable lesson. I realized you probably shouldn’t write an amends letter that ends with you asking someone to listen to your demo.”

Ahhhh I love Courtney Love, thanks so much for this EW. She’s fearless and amazing live (I saw her last year at the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle).
The interview is really candid and interesting.

    Technically a celebrity.

  • !

Eccentric, hilarious, sweet and sad. I love this woman.

  • mage?!

After reading the full interview, she seems like she understands what she has been through. A bit crazy, but who isn’t these days. The Media circus that was/is her life has made it almost impossible to lead a normal life. I hope she does well, also Francis Bean.

I want to live in Malibu. That’s it though.

I think her downfall of Def Leppard comment had to do with the ’90s alternative music dominance that her band Hole and other bands did that decade that drove ’80s hair metal bands like Def Leppard off the front pages of magazines. I think she wanted to defend her band Hole and their sound. I liked her humor and honesty about her troubles and drug overdoses.

If she had anything to do with the downfall of Def Leppard and Tesla the world owes her a debt of gratitude.

courtney sure is something else. eh?>

Well I’ve never ever done drugs so I can’t relate to the drug part of her story. Its obvious though that she is replacing one drug with another addictive substance but this one seems to be self importance. Hole never sold many records. She’s like Paris Hilton….famous for being famous. But unlike Paris, Love did manage to hook up with a phenomonally talented man who is a classic example of a tortured soul gone too soon.

She should change her last name to Hunt because it rhymes with….

    • Esox

        Blunt. She’s very blunt…doesn’t sugarcoat anything. ;)

bad music, even worse person. ’nuff said.

What a joke. I can’t believe she is now blamed for Def Leppard. What a big joke!!!

  • 2 suits down, more to come.

Wonder how many defamations will come out of it? Charley?

Add Pamela Anderson (altho it’s probably true), Kelly Osborn, the writer/interviewer for The Fix- Maer Roshan, Andre Balazs, Chelsea Handler, her daughter Frances, Lynn Hirshburg, hmm, Im sure there are more. And the latest news? Courtney is claiming the interviewer Maer Roshan took all her comments out of context, wrote stuff that she had intended to be ‘off the record’ and more than half was untrue. I think maybe she’s feeling the heat from somewhere. Charley Sheen maybe? Or all the negative comments? Interesting…

Def leppard is not a hair metal band. Theyre not from L.A. And they didnt start in the 80s. They started in the 70s and got theyre sound from thin lizzy led zeppelin queen ac dc the who. Adrenalize came out after pearl jam and nirvana in 1992 and debuted number 1 for 4 straight weeks and sold 6 million copies with 6 hit singles. In 93 retro active went platinum and had 2 hits two steps behind and miss you in a heartbeat. Vault which was released in 95 has sold 5 million copies. In 96 they had a hit single work it out off of the slang album. In 99 euphoria went gold and had the number1 mainstream rock single promises. 2002 they released album X which had the hit single now and had a great world tour as all of theyre tours continue to be among the top poolers. Best of in 04. Rock of ages/the definitive collection in 05 went platinum with the hit single rock on. Yeah in 06 which debuted number 14. Songs from the sparkle lounge in 08 which debuted number 5 with hit single 9 lives. And now a live album mirrorball

Def leppard continue to sell out arenas and venues constantly having between 10 and 20k people in audience while bands like poison/styx/journey/cheap trick/bryan adams/foreignor/heart etc open up for them. All the members in def leppard are wealthy. Recently the band appeared on celebrity apprentice lopez jay leno fox news. were on cmt crossroads with taylor swift. Nominated for a video and performance on cmt. The band has never split up. hmmm funny how most 90s bands dont exist anymore

      • Michael roberts

Theyve also been on dancing with the stars and american idol. They have platinum albums in 3 seperate decades and over 30 hits. hair metal bands dont do that. and how many hits did hole have? Maybe 5? Def leppard is a classic rock band as is motley crue.
