Woman found dead at Bonnaroo camp ground

Tragedy hit this weekend’s Bonnaroo festival today, as the festival’s organizers confirmed the death of a 32-year-old woman at the Manchester, Tennessee music event’s camp ground.

The cause of death had not yet been determined. The woman—whose name has been withheld pending notification of her family, but has been identified as having lived in the Pittsburgh area—was found by her friends on Thursday night (June 9) at the camping area.

It continues an uncomfortable trend of casualties at music festivals, especially at Bonnaroo. This represents the ninth death in the festival’s ten years, including the 2010 death of a man from Wilmington, North Carolina, who passed away after having a stroke on the grounds.

Drugs tend to come into play with festival-related deaths (21-year-old Ben Muller died of a drug overdose at Coachella in 2008), while others simply seem to stem from pre-existing health conditions (a 39-year-old man passed away at Lollapalooza in 2009 following a heart attack).

However, the heat almost certainly exacerbates these things; the man who passed away at Bonnaroo last year was found to have a core temperature of 108 degrees.

Bonnaroo began on Thursday and will continue through Sunday night, featuring sets from the likes of Eminem, Lil Wayne, Arcade Fire and Mumford & Sons.

These festivals need to end. They are too expensive, too hot and too dangerous. You can’t hear or see much. If you really enjoy music, there is no reason to go.

        CLASSIC!!!

      • @ S.O.

        How is that classic?

      • ReallyLAME

Wow. Talk about “crickets”. Hope you aren’t thinking about attempting a career in comedy. Just stick with that data entry job.

    • Jay

Dont blame the festival!! Some poeple use drugs and all, but thats their own damn fault.

    • mark @Madness

Are you insane? Who are y ou to tell people what they should or shouldn’t be doing…Why should thousands of people be deprived of a CONCERT because one person has a pre-existing condition or MAY suffer from a heart attack? Not to mention all of the money and jobs that these events bring in…I feel for your kids if you have any.

      • whatevs

Somebody wants the concerts to end and suddenly that makes them a bad parent? What does one thing have to do with another? If anything, people should feel sorry for your kids for having such an ignorant and judgmental parent.

      • LOL

Mark sounds like he’s a little crazy from the heat. Stay in the A/C and drink some iced tea.

      • mark @Madness

It doesn’t make him or her a bad parent, it makes them an over protective and overly cautious one who will deprive their kids of many great life experiences out of fear. I have been to many a summer music festival without any danger and they have been some of the greatest highlights of my summer…plus, realistically, why would you even call for an end to them, there is no chance in hell that they will end

      • mark @Madness

Additionally, I think the thing that angered me was the ridiculous blanket statement, “If you really enjoy music, there is no reason to go” which is just ignorant on so many levels

      • Jason

He DID say “You can’t hear or see much” and if thats true… there is no GD reason to go. Plain and simple. Unless you enjoy wasting money irrationally.

      • Loch Ness

Mark probably just goes there to run wild. Truth is, it often is very hard to really see or hear well at those giant festivals. Most music fans avoid those sweat-fests and see their favorites in smaller, better venues.

      • mark @Madness

I think music festivals are a great way to see extremely popular bands like Coldplay in a venue where you’re not seated and actually have a chance to get up close without paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I see lots of smaller bands at smaller venues but for the most popular artists, music festivals are ideal

    • Heavy

I think people should just stop being retarded and taking too many drugs. I was at bonnaroo this year and no problem handling myself. DRINK WATER..that usually helps

Just. Stop. Now. Your jokes are only funny in your own head, when you imagine yourself a comic in front of an audience. Please, go back to the daydreaming and leave us gentle forum readers alone.

Hey, I thought they were funny.

  • tnsmoke

It is way too hot here in Nashville. Over 300 fans attending Fan Fair have had to be treated for heat related issues. And Bonnaroo down the road. The heat will take a huge toll by the time both events end Sunday night.

    • T-Bone

Yeah I live right smack in the middle of both of these events and you wouldn’t catch me at either of them. It’s too freaking hot to be standing outside all day long.

      • tnsmoke

I have lived here 14 years and never done the whole Fan Fair thing. I just would go to a few fan club parties. Living here you can see most artists all the time and often at small clubs where the shows are intimate and you can hang out with the artists after the show. Not to mention freebies. I don’t see anyone in arenas or large venues anymore.

    • Brenda Barrett

I was at the CMA Music Fest today and you could literally feel the sun burning your skin after only a few minutes. Tennessee in the summer is just too hot. Bonnaroo is my idea of Hades: heat, mud, drugs and no showers or indoor plumbing. No thanks.

      • music fan

Bonnaroo is not what people think . You can enjoy the music, the people and the arts, showers are available in the vip areas and clean bathrooms are provided with airconditioning, and attendants who clean after each use. Bonnaroo theme is teaching people how to be earth friendly, and take care of each other. like anywhere else when you put over 100 thousand people in one place you will find all walks of life . Not everyone at bonnaroo does drugs not even close. The one who do would do them if they where at Bonnaroo or not.

    • Kacy

Some of us are in the heat everyday and myself by choice. Why would you want to cancel the fest.Dont like the heat, sunshine, rain or music then u dont have to buy tickets

    • Tristan

Or I don’t know, schedule the event over Spring Break when it’s cooler, or start the music when the sun goes down and run it all night into the morning, like vampires. Would be safer than the godawful heat.

  • wakeforce

Okay. I’ll play. If you choose to go and you die, I choose to not CARE!

  • Ryan Anon

i just want everyone to know that if you dont stick up for things like bonaroo when these pessimistic people have rude things to say because they dont want to open up and maybe see both sides before they judge. people LOVE bonaroo and its really one of the BIG shindigs that go down so for people who dont like what it is and whats its about and who all is there, DONT GO! because we dont want you there either

    • Lex

agreed! Don’t go then! Because it would suck having boring people there anyways.

    • LMFAO

Holy crap, Ryan! What a long sentence. No wonder it made little sense. Punctuation is your friend. Use it.

    • Ghost of Pia

Ryan’s brain is fried. Stay out of the sun, junior.

  • David

So, at a 3-4 day festival, with what, about 100,000 people outdoors in the hot sun all day long, we’re averaging less than 1 death per year? Realistically, that sounds remarkably safe. I bet the death rates for the same demographic of people over an equivalent time period would be about the same, even without the higher rates of risk factors such as of being out in the sun all day, getting de-hydrated, or higher rates of drug/alcohol use.

A woman is dead. Someone’s wife or girlfriend, someone’s or sister or mother. Have some respect, will you. Show some compassion.

    • Henri M.

We get it, your’e a sick person. Now stop with the jokes already.

  • Arnel pineda

Ban festivals and get your Pertussis shots! A whole 30 people have died between the two! Ignore smoking/heart disease/AIDS and cancer while you’re at it.
