After being found guilty in February for conspiring to deal cocaine, reggae superstar Buju Banton (né Mark Myrie), 38, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, Yahoo reports.

The Jamaica native was given the lowest sentence possible for his crimes, conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine, and using a telephone to facilitate a drug trafficking offense.

“The days that lie ahead are filled with despair, but I have courage and grace and I’m hopeful, and that is sufficient to carry me through,” he said in the statement. “The man is not dead. Don’t call him a ghost.”

Prior to being found guilty in February, Banton scored a controversial win at the Grammys for Best Reggae Album for Before the Dawn.

Gotta love how you take the side of a convicted drug trafficker. Your parents must be so proud…if you only knew who they were…

      • Jay

He’ll be out in less than 5 for good behavior, and taking a plea deal that allows him to motivate young youths about staying away from drug dealers.

    • wakeforce

Good riddims,I mean good riddance. HA!

It amazes me how many people praise, drug dealers going to jail for many years and cause a riot over it; but when child molesters and rapist get convicted for five and seven years, no one thinks that’s wrong. You people are such JERK OFF’s, its a small world. Most cops are dirty, and when an innocent person goes to jail, its never nice. Remember it could be one of you at any given time. All it takes is being a the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe I should say, sometimes you think you are at the right place, but you were there the wrong time.

As a West Indian I am sorry to hear about Buju’s jail term. Who knows, maybe the final lines have not yet been written on this saga.

To those who are happy over the results of the trial, I say why gloat over someone else’s misfortune when today it is him and tomorrow it may be someone you love (or you).

Because the man is a huge homophobe and has advocated for the extermination of gay men through his music, that’s why!

      • Sal

I thought that the freedom to express ones self without the fear of repercussion still exist, or is it only for people like you?

    • Trent

“Misfortune” occurs when something bad happens to an innocent person. Banton is a criminal. What’s happening to him is called “justice.”

      • Sal

Really trent so you were there when it happened?

  • Solange

He’s making money as a singer so why the heck is dealing drugs?! No other extracurricular activities to think of?! If he wanted more money, go open a business or something *sigh*

    • Jay

He Spent his money bad mama. What a shame. His desperation got the best of Him.

Love your defense of Buju. What did you have the nerve to say, ‘do not worried about who want to pass there judgement only god is your judge’????? Really??!!! Buju certainly passed judgement on gay people. I have NO sympathy for such a man of hatred. I do hope he meets Bubba and they became FAST friends.

we are fully aware of america and and their ideology towards black people this is still one of the greatest racesist country on the plannet their history has shown that they hate the progress of black people i cant think of one black person who tries or have made it succesful in the world who happen to go or being in america have not been chastized, demonized, murdered, imprisoned, discrimenated, humiliated they do it repeatedly everytime they even have policies beating down the rights of people who are strait and clean and give power to people who does not respect the laws of the most high and mother nature they are forcing the world to accept what the father is totaly against in the scriptures he has no comprimise with homosexuality liviticus 20 chapter 13 says if you practice same sex and annimal sex u should die that’s God,s laws and it shows clear now that america and her allies are indeed the antichrist countries that is messing up the world

    • Mr Jay

well said RASTAFARI well said my brother

    • wakeforce

It’s good to know you defend a drug dealer who sells to his own people. Black folks have done more damage to each other in the last 20 years than white people have done in the last 200 years, yet you blame gay people! Idiot!
