Ice Cube on VH1's 'Behind the Music': Watch the preview -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Rapper Missy Elliott launched the latest round of VH1’s Behind the Music episodes last week, and the next musician to get similar treatment is another rapper: Ice Cube. The episode — which premieres tomorrow, July 6 at 10 p.m. on VH1 — follows the three-decade-long career of Cube, tracing his way from his upbringing in South Central Los Angeles to being a founding member of NWA to eventually becoming an actor in movies like Friday and Are We There Yet?

Cube talks at length about his family and kids (two of which hope to follow in his footsteps!), and friends like Snoop Dogg, DJ Yella, and Nia Long talk about the rapper. EW has the exclusive first look at the episode. Watch the full, exclusive preview video here:

wow!! I can’t wait to hear about his groundbreaking use of profanity, digital beats and samples! not to mention his innovative use of the word “n***a”. he’s a true talent. plus, he’s named after a six-sided square of frozen water. I’m THERE V-H1!!

You’re an Idiot. If you don’t like or understand the music, why leave a comment?

      • outside agitator

what did I say that showed I didn’t understand Ice Cube’s “music”? every word I said was true. if you’re implying people should only make positive statements on every subject, how does this apply to Ice Cube’s “songs”? there are definitely some negative ideas in his otherwise wonderful, melodic, lyrical compositions.

whatever nonsense you typed, becaues i didn’t read any of it, doesn’t change the fact that you’re still an idiot.

      • Tim

        where my gerunds at?

@Me, If you didn’t read his comment how are you replying to it? Oh nevermind. You won’t read this either.

that’s amazing!! your debating technique is almost as masterful as Ice Cube’s use of “N***a” in his “lyrics”. I’m humbled and now consider him an accomplished composer, writer and singer. and I’m looking forward to the next sequel of Friday.

        Who is Cat Wiliams?

  • jd

he does have an interesting story. he was the irst member of nwa to realize he was getting the shaft from jerry heller.

No, I really want to know what really went down with his old group N.W.A. and why they constantly insulted him in their lyrics on their 1990 EP album 100 Miles and Runnin, about a year after he left the group. Calling him Benedict Arnold on a few tracks. It was a really uncomfortable listen when I heard that EP. That they wouldn’t accept Ice’s solo career when his first album came out in summer 1990. He was like the Chuck D of the group with his socially conscious lyrics, versus the profanity of Dre, MC Ren and Eazy-E. I’ve enjoyed the diverse movies he’s been in such as the Friday movies, Boyz-N-The-Hood and Are We There Yet. As well as his rap albums, which he gets much better from the last one.

  • imani

wow i’m excited for this ep. i’m interested in the backstory of when he was in boys in the hood & friday

  • agitator_is_worthless

agitator youre such a hater cube was the first political rapper who brought light to several issues of society and you are looking at his music from a literal perspective rather than philosophical he is much better than say the garbage of today such as soldier boy little wane conway west etc

    • Do Your Homework

Cube was not the first political rapper. Obviously you never heard his early music. There were tons of rappers from the East that started the whole political jawn. Cube came in on the back end of that movement. But he is an amazing artist. Glad VH1 is profiling him.

wow, I’m worthless! and an idiot! and yet not a single person seems able to show why Ice Cube deserves a Behind the Music episode. rather than insulting me, quote at length from his “lyrics”, direct attention to his skills as a musician(Behind the MUSIC) and perhaps as a singer. good luck with that.

      • Kay

@outside agitator…ICE CUBE deserves a Behind The Music because he started off on one box and grew (matured) to rise above the ideas that he thought made him. He transformed into a man, and he helped change the game. He’s a savvy businessman, has managed not to go bankrupt, overdosed or murdered anyone. People change and the show is to showcase how ICE has done that.

“Cube” as he is referred to is a no-talent ghetto rap thug. “Understand” his music? What’s to understand, he’s a moron and so are those that hold him in high regard. His trash is to art what sh*t is to food.

    • kel

Sweet Frankie, “haters gon’ hate”. You may have clicked into the wrong comments section. We aren’t chatting about Vampire Diaries over here. No worries, easy to mix these two up. Bless your baby heart. Kindly move along now.

    • jamarious

Who’s to say Frank doesn’t work for the LAPD? HA!

Ice Cube has forever left a big mark on music. Well done, Cube.

  • Digger

To Kel- You sound like a simpleton, I happen to agree with Frank! As for your intelligent post of “haters gon’ hate”, don’t confuse truth with hate.

    • kel

Sweet Digger, oh the irony! Bless your baby heart, this is a little over your head. Good luck with that Twilight marathon. Much respect to Ice Cube!

  • Daniel

started from the bottom, had a celebrated rap career, now he’s a actor, producer, owner of his own label and film studio, won awards out the ying yang. forget the people who love to focus on the literal words when they hear the term “rap”. this ep is for the ice cube fans who saw him come from nothing to an outstanding self-made entrepreneurial figure. forget the lyrics he rapped 20 years ago. look at what the man has accomplished over the decades. more than any of you arguing on here obviously. to tell the truth, cube is probably more of an household figure from being an actor rather than a rapper. he’s dope, but what keeps in the elites of the rap world is being one of the founders of the west-coast gangsta rap movement – sure it’s terrible to some, but it gave the west coast the spotlight in the hip-hop community – most of you probably don’t understand but that’s ok – cube did ALOT more than just rap about b****, punk ‘po-po’s’ and so forth – so stop focusing on JUST that.
