Was Kings of Leon's frontman 'unfit to play' during Dallas concert? Watch his performance here

Kings of Leon cut their show short in Dallas, Texas, on Friday night, with band members explaining that singer Caleb Followill was “unfit” to finish the show.

Midway through the performance, Followill told fans, “For the record, I’m not drunk, I’m just f—in’ hot…I’m about to fall down here because I’m so f–in’ hot.” He soon left the stage, saying, “I’m gonna go backstage and I’m gonna vomit, I’m gonna drink a beer and I’m gonna come back out and play three more songs.” But the band never returned.

“Caleb’s just a little unfit to maybe play the rest of the show,” bassist Jared Followill told the crowd. “We’re really really sorry guys…I know you guys f–ing hate us… It’s really not our fault, it’s Caleb. He can’t play the rest of the show.”

A statement released on Saturday by a spokesperson for the band claimed that Followill “suffered from heat exhaustion and dehydration during last night’s Dallas performance, causing his vocal chords to seize,” and noted that Kings of Leon had rescheduled their Saturday night gig in Houston. (The band was not available for comment at press time.)

But other band members seemed to tell a different story. “Dallas, I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am,” Jared wrote on Twitter. “There are internal sicknesses & problems that have needed to be addressed.” He added: “I know you guys aren’t stupid. I can’t lie. There are problems in our band bigger than not drinking enough Gatorade.”

    Drunkity drunk drunk drunk.

Maybe what really happened was that Caleb experienced a heat-induced moment of revelation and became suddenly and acutely aware of how overrated his band is, and he had no choice but to stop right then and there.

I saw KOL last summer. They sounded good live, but I can’t say they blew the crowd away. Maybe it was a bit disconcerting the way we constantly saw – on stage as well as on the big screens – Caleb checking his watch every song or two like he couldn’t wait to get out of there?

He was just on 120 Minutes saying he was so hammered one night, he didn’t remember meeting and hanging with Eddie Vedder

Drunk and P-whipped, if you ask me. He’s been this way since he got married.

Shades of Alec John Such back in Bon Jovi’s heyday.

I have lived in Texas for most of my life (and Wyoming and Montana in Winter, so I do have perspective) and this year has been ridiculous with heat, even for those of us used to it. So his excuse is at least plausible. Of course, the having a beer to stave off dehydration kind of undercuts his credibility, since anyone who has ever read a paper or watched a morning show knows that alcohol exacerbates dehydration. but maybe he isn’t up on his Dr. Oz.

I’m seeing them in 2 weeks. He best get his crap together by then.

    • Julie

      Ditto to that Kevin!

      Negative, tour is cancelled

Sounds like another Creed in Chicago-type incident with the lead singer of the band being too drunk to perform. Wouldn’t surprise me if fans end up suing due to the bad/lack of performance.

I really don’t personally care how “overrated” some may say they are, I happen to be a very big fan of their music, and mainly the music they DON’T play on the radio. Whatever is going on with Caleb, I hope he gets the help he needs.

    • Meli

I’m a fan of theirs too, but I draw the line at p-whipped, whiny, 3-sheets-to-the-wind behavior when it affects your work. If Caleb Followill doesn’t want to be in the band anymore, either because he truly wants to do something else or he simply wants to go the way of Amy Winehouse and drink himself to death, then he should have the stones to tell his bandmates and the fans the truth. If not, he needs to shut up, grow and pair, and sober up and play.

      • Meli

that’s grow *a* pair, not what I wrote.

      • StewyFan

See, I am apparently not as up on all of the goings on in his personal life as much as you are. I just really like their music. I don’t think any of us know the whole truth of what is going on backstage, but I do wish that they can get their sh*t together and fix things. And I do think it is far too soon to be making Amy Winehouse comparisons.

  • Kb

so that means anyone who attended gets a refund right?

  • Em

i was there for the show. and caleb seemed WASTED. band of horses kicked ass. what a waste…
