Coldplay debut new song, pay tribute to Amy Winehouse on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

Coldplay know how to construct sweeping anthems, and they’re also pretty good at multi-tasking. Last night, they played a concert at UCLA (their first in the United States this year) that doubled as a benefit for the Grammy Foundation’s “Grammy in the Schools” program. On top of that, two of the evening’s tunes were broadcast on last night’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

With typical Colplayian majesty, Chris Martin and his cohorts blew through a new song called “Charlie Brown” as well as a live rendition of the single “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.” Both sounded sharp and crisp (the band has been honing their chops on the road in Europe), and they look ready to blow away the masses who will gather this weekend in Chicago for Lollapalooza, where Coldplay will headline on Friday night.

Give a listen to both the live version of “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” and the new track “Charlie Brown” (both of which will appear on Coldplay’s still-untitled fifth studio album, out this fall) after the jump.

Interestingly, Kimmel reminded the crowd that Coldplay was actually the very first band to ever play the host’s show way back in 2003. When asked what they’ve been up to since then, Martin joked, “Will works at FedEx, and the rest of us run a pet shop.” We knew from his appearance on Extras that Martin could be funny, but is he this funny all the time?

Coldplay’s 90 minute set also included a tribute to Amy Winehouse, as Martin dropped a bit of “Rehab” into the opening moments of “Fix You” during the concert’s encore.

The best day of your life was sitting and watching someone play music? Really?? Sad.

That’s awesome dude. I’d give anything to see Coldplay live. Really wanted to see them at Lollapalooza this year, but they sold out so fast.

One of the greatest bands in the world (with Muse). Love the songs, can’t wait for the album!

I don’t know what the song has to do with Charlie Brown, but I really like it. The EP so far has a little more of an Eno/Radiohead/U2 sound, and it’s nice to hear a band try to expand their sound but still sound like themselves.

I always love me some Coldplay. I know there are a lot of haters, but they are one of my favorire bands. Their music is simplistic in a sense, but there is a lot of emotion in their songs, and they have a great sense of melody and their orchestrations and use of dynamics within the song is impeccable. So hate all you want, but they are a great band that happen to have pop sensibilities, which a lot of people automatically think is crap. I disagree. Keep it coming!

I saw them when they came to the States for their “Viva la Vida” tour and it was fantastic! Can’t wait to see them again. They are the best band out there today, live and on the radio.

Coldplay is awesome live. I’ve heard people say they’re boring, and I have no idea where that comes from. They are NOT boring live, that’s for sure. Also, yes, Chris is that funny all the time. He does not take himself as seriously as people think he does.

I think they are the best Band ever!! I have seen Coldplay live 09-09-09 @ Nijmegen, The Netherlands, and they are great. Can’t wait untill their new album will come out.
