Morrissey comic book coming in November

Tags:

When we heard that a selection of songs by the Smiths had inspired a comic book series, we started to imagine what kind of superhero Morrissey would be. Maybe he’d call himself Super Bummed Out Man, or perhaps he’d anchor a series called Captain Big Mouth Strikes Again?

We’ll get to find out when the comic book compilation Unite and Take Over: Comic Book Stories Inspired by The Smiths premieres at Tuscon Comic-Con in November, just following the October release of that massive Smiths box set.

The comic book project was inspired by Moz fan and SpazDog Press publisher Shawn Demumbrum, who tapped indie comics vets Christian Vilaire, Henry Barajas, Jeff Pina, Shelby Robertson, and others for 78 pages’ worth of comic strips. (Demumbrum also wrote one himself.)

“The concept’s pretty simple: what’s the story that plays in your head when you listen to your favorite Smiths song?” Demumbrum explained in a promotional video for the crowdsourcing web site Kickstarter.com, which helped fund the project. “The song acts as an inspiration, jumping off point, theme or mood for the story.”

In an interview with the Guardian, Demumbrum added: “As a teen in the 80s, one of my favourite soundtracks was the Pretty in Pink soundtrack. While training for cross country, I played the cassette over and over on my Walkman as I ran. There was always something about the Smiths’ ‘Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want.’ It tapped into my teenage psyche, a combination of loneliness and yet hopeful optimism, that only Morrissey’s vocals seem to capture.”

Listen to Demumbrum talk about the project in detail over at Kickstarter.

It always amazes me how people link Morrissey so closely with the Smiths. Yes, he was the band’s lead singer, but Johnny Marr’s guitar and melodic sense is what made the band so vital not Morrissey’s tuneless singing and self absorbed persona.

If they ever release a best of the Smiths karaoke boxed set I’m sure you’ll be first in line.

I’m confused.. are the comic books based on Morrissey or the Smiths? They may have been synonymous before, but now they are different. The Smiths > Morrissey

“The concept for Unite and Take Over is pretty simple. What story plays in your head when you listen to your favorite Smiths song? I approached some of my fellow comic book creators and asked them to create 4-8 pages stories inspired by their favorite Smiths songs. The song acts as an inspiration, jumping off point, theme or mood for the story. Each story varies in style and genre.”

Tori – I agree that Morrissey and the Smiths are not the same. This is not like the Public Enemy comic book where Public Enemy are the main characters in the book. Think more like Tori Amos’ Comic Tattoo.

Definitely imagine that which you said. Your favourite justification appeared to be on the internet the simplest factor to have in mind of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed while people think about concerns that they just don’t recognise about. You managed to hit the nail upon the highest as well as defined out the whole thing without having side effect , folks can take a signal. Will likely be again to get more. Thanks
