Oh, I am so sorry to read this. Ashford & Simpson were such a dynamic duo and they created some of the best, most timeless music I’ve ever heard. My condolences to Valerie Simpson, their family and friends. Love lives on through the music.

my favorite song by them is probably “Ain’t no Mountain High Enough”. I like the version by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, but the version by Diana Ross is really cool too. actually that song’s been recorded lots of times, but those versions are my two favorites. may he rest in peace! my condolences to Valerie Simpson too. thank you for all the great music!!

I am shocked and saddened that Nick Ashford passed away. He and Valerie Simpson performed and wrote some terrific songs as a duo and for other artists. They wrote some solid songs for Diana Ross’ albums when she went solo in the ’70s. As well as Motown’s artists, Ray Charles and other soul singers. He didn’t look like he was in his 60s in his performances the past decade–he looked very active and youthful. I loved that duo’s hits in the ’70s and ’80s like Is It Still Good To Ya, It Seems to Hang On, Any Street Corner, their wonderful 1984 hit Solid, High Rise, I’ll Be There For You (which was a hit the same time as Bon Jovi’s song of the same name in early 1989), Count Your Blessings and others. There will never be another soul duet like Ashford and Simpson. My condolences and prayers go out to Valerie Simpson and his family at this time….

What’s so funny is that I was listening to Solid, their 1984 hit, in the background in a grocery store a few weeks ago. I still find myself in tears in the song’s closing minute of the 5 minute album version that they play because their singing is so real and raw when Ashford and Simpson deliver, as if their longtime relationship is solid. They made the words come to life when they sang it in the recording. That’s why it’s so loved today. We will miss you Nick…..

They always seemed so loving toward each other. I think that’s why they made such beautiful music together. I grew up to their music. My heart goes out to the family, but especially to the other half of his heart Valarie.

I remember going to their 1st restaurant in NYC in the 1980′s; and marveling at the “nouvelle soul food” cuisine. Me and my friends couldn’t afford to eat there often; but went there because we so loved Nick & Val; and had gone to their concerts since the 1970′s. He will really be missed.
