Tom Jones cancels concert due to 'severe dehydration'

The sex bomb did not explode last night. Classic rock/soul crooner Tom Jones announced in a statement on his website today that “due to severe dehydration,” he was forced to cancel his concert in Monaco on Saturday. The statement emphatically stressed that Jones was not suffering from any heart problems, as had been reported in the British press.

“This was extremely disappointing for Tom, the band and all connected with the tour,” the statement continued. “This was the last date of a very successful three month tour, where many of the shows were in locations that were in the throes of high summer heat.”

The Associated Press is reporting that Jones was admitted to the Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco on Saturday night, and was “doing well” on Sunday, though it’s unclear when he will be released.

I’ve never heard a non-celebrity have to take time off work for “dehydration”. Do celebrity’s have an aversion to water or something?

    • amy

I like your comment! You’re right, regular people have to go to work no matter how bad we feel.

I am a nurse in a major hospital and a great many of my patients come in for severe dehydration. It is a condition that is very common among older people and not only can it hospitalize you, it can kill you. Tom Jones is not a young man and would be very susceptible to this kind of medical problem given that he dances on stage for hours a night in warm conditions. So you might want to do your research before making inane comments that make you sound uninformed.

Most people who post here have no brain.

    • erin

And because you’ve never heard of it, it must not happen? Sheesh

I’m an actor/singer. Not only (as ninjaRN points out) is dehydration a serious condition but, if dehydrated, the vocal chords don’t have enough water to do their job correctly. Singing/performing while dehydrated could do serious and lasting damage. You wouldn’t send an athlete out onto the field with dehydration. When singers are performing, believe me, they are athletes. It’s the same thing. Just because you think it looks like so much fun and like it’s so easy anyone could do it….it is HARD WORK. Just like someone who has a job where they have to lift heavy boxes which puts incredible strain on their muscles, a singer is putting just as much strain on their vocal chords which is, HELLO, a muscle. You really sound like an idiot when you post things like that. So why don’t you stop. Jagoff.

Yes, dehydration is common, esp. among entertainers….because they’re working non-stop, traveling and “forget” to drink water. Also, if they’re drinking alcohol that will dehydrate you.

  • Inverse137

OMG!!! Seriously!! I hope he is OK!!!

What is the treatment for dehydration??!?!?! Is it preventable in the first place?

Somebody please find a cure to dehydration and stop this suffering now!!!

    • Jeff

      You are an idiot!

      • Vince

I think they are being sarcastic. Scratch that, I pray they are being sarcastic.

      • Jason

You are the idiot here for not sensing the sarcasm.

  • Inverse137

    Dear publicist,

I have to tell you…releasing a statement that says someone cannot perform because of dehydration makes you and your client look like idiots.

If you want a good statement say your client was partying for 72 hours straight with 6 Thai hookers and 6 cases of bourbon.

    THAT is rock and roll.

Forgetting to drink your Smarte Water is lame.

Tom Jones leaves it all out on the stage. He always delivers an energetic preformance. Most preformers would be retired at his age but he seems to go on and on. Get well soon Mr. Jones you are a living legend.

  • Ron Dean

Why doesn’t he just admit that he is an alcoholic. The only time severe deyrdation and a heart condition cancels a concert. Alcohol withdrawal. No shame in that but there is when people lie about it like this.

    • maggie25

I don’t know if he has a drinking problem or not, but come on, we are talking about a 71-year-old man at the end of a 3-month tour. It’s not that hard to imagine he could have dehydration problems. Anyway, if he is an alcoholic and is experiencing dehydration because of that, he isn’t obligated to announce that publicly.

      • talkin’

        well said

I think he should retire once for all. Enough of his histrionics “I am the voice of Wales”. He is neither rock nor soul, he is pure rubbish.

    • Sally in Chicago

Have you ever seen him in concert? Great voice, great moves, great personality on stage.

  • d.c.

I’m sorry, I couldn’t hear you over the sound of your rubbish boulder smashing out of your glass house…Tom Jones has been dodging ladies’ panties onstage since my mom went to see him in the 60’s, that must be exhausting!

  • d.c.

also, saving the earth from aliens in Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! must also be a little fatiguing…

  • Dumbledore Fluffernutter

Hey, Tom- “Just Help Yourself” to some bottled water or Gatorade during your performances so you don’t dehydrate. “It’s Not Unusual” for performers to hydrate while on stage.

  • samueladawg

I was under 50 & was hospitalized over night with dehydration. I passed out & didnt know why. I had 3 large saline ivs. Released & told bedrest next 2 days. I dont drink so not a factor. Need gatorade in these types of situations. Water doesnt help much cause you sweat the salt out & need salt to keep up the blood pressure.

    • @samueladawg

and what does your experience have to do with Tom Jones?

      • maggie25

I believe that maybe he samueladawg is showing that not only celebrities get dehydration, i.e. it is not a made up problem.

  • sam

I hope that he is feeling better. I always love to see him on stage. He has been great for so many years.

  • Johnny Depp is Hot!

Lots of people get dehydrated when they get the flu, not saying that was the case.

  • Zeke

It’s not unusual to be suffering from exhaustion in desert heat.

  • Jenn

My grandfather had to be hospitalized for dehydration a couple of times-so no, It’s Not Unusual :)) nor is it just a celeb prob, because although he was a star to me, he’s just a regular Joe to everyone else. May he RIP.

  • JPX

“Dehydration”? That’s the go-to diagnosis reported when musicians don’t want to provide the real reason they are cancelling (i.e. drug or heatlh problems). What the hell is “dehydration”? That’s like saying that someone had a “nervous breakdown”, it means nothing. “The statement emphatically stressed that Jones was not suffering from any heart problems” – I think they protest too much.
