Tony Bennett on Amy Winehouse: 'She was very nervous' recording 'Body & Soul' -- watch the video here

Tony-Bennett

It’s pretty poetic that Amy Winehouse’s final recording was a collaboration with Tony Bennett on the classic song “Body & Soul.” The tune will appear on Bennett’s upcoming Duets II album, which also features collaborations with Lady Gaga, Aretha Franklin, Carrie Underwood, and a host of other huge current stars.

“Body & Soul,” the album’s first official single, will drop next Wednesday, September 14, and Bennett himself spoke to Entertainment Weekly for a feature that will be gracing your local newsstand on Friday, September 16.

In the conversation, Bennett talked extensively about recording with the late chanteuse, who he saw as a kindred spirit carrying on an endangered musical legacy.

“What I love about Amy Winehouse is that, of all the singers since the Beatles, you automatically check everyone out who’s a lot younger, but there’s been such a big walk away from jazz,” Bennett told EW‘s Melissa Maerz. “Some people think that anyone could sing jazz, but they can’t. It’s a gift of learning how to syncopate but it’s also a spirit that you’re either born with or you’re not. And Amy was born with that spirit.”

Based on the clip below of Bennett and Winehouse in the studio (a brief bit of which appeared on the MTV Video Music Awards a few weeks ago), the late singer seemed at ease working with one of her idols on one of her dad’s favorite songs. Watch the clip here, and learn more about their interaction after the jump:

While they were recording “Body & Soul,” Bennett said that Winehouse was a tad overwhelmed by the whole experience until he put her at ease. “She was very nervous to perform, but I said, ‘You know, it sounds like you’re influenced by Dinah Washington.’ And all of the sudden, her whole life changed,” he explained. “She said, ‘How did you know that Dinah Washington is my goddess?’ She did some Dinah Washington licks, and from that moment on, she just relaxed. And it came out wonderful. She was like, ‘Tony understands me, you know?'”

“Jazz is a wonderful art,” he continues. “Listening to it, I compare it to watching the greatest tennis player who’s so intelligent about where he places the ball, it becomes effortless. The great ones that are very talented know just how to turn jazz singing into a performance that’s unforgettable. And Amy had that gift. The fact that she died at 27 years old is just horrible to me. If she had lived, she would’ve been right up there with Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington. It’s just a tragedy.”

You can check out the full feature on Bennett in next Friday’s issue, and “Body & Soul” will be out next week, with the rest of the Duets II album arriving on September 20.

I think that Tony Bennett’s album will have some huge sales because of his duet with Amy Winehouse. People will get the CD and automatically put the CD track button to his duet with Amy. They’ll pay more attention to that snng than the other superstar names on the album.

I wish Lady Gaga died of a heroin/cocain overdose. ..not Amy Winehouse!

Hush. Don’t wish for people to die. That’s just wrong.

Lady Gaga is a copycat, fraud and brand name.

Amy is very original. Miss her..

      • Lady BlaBla

Jeeze ..thats so insulting to mention Lady Copycat in the same thread with Amy!

      • Batiste

What a horrible wish! I wouldn’t be surprised to see you burning in hell while Amy’s with the angels.

Apparently, Tony and Lady Gaga have recorded “The Lady Is A Tramp,” and she’s just fantastic. There are layers to her voice we haven’t heard before – she would make a wonderful jazz singer. I predict at the upcoming Grammy awards, this album and “Body and Soul” are going to dominate.

      • Ethan

Yeah did anyone see those MTV ads where she sings a little of “You and I” as though it were a jazz number? I thought it sounded awesome, I really wish she’d release that as a whole song – she DOES sound like you can really sing jazz.

“Lady Gaga is the illuminati puppet”

Gaga introduced Joe Calderone, a male alter-ego. Like most of Gaga’s other stunts, most people have absolutely no idea why Gaga did what she did. Why was she dressed as an Italian dude to sing a country-rock song? What’s the point?

Like most of Gaga’s other stunts, the occult meaning of this whole charade can be found in the music video.

While the video could be the subject of an entire article, I can sum it up in a few words: mind control. More specifically, it is about Monarch programming and the creation of alter-egos through the use of trauma-inducing techniques. In the video, Gaga is shown bound and tortured by a cruel handler who subjects her to the most common methods of mind control: Electroshock therapy, sexual abuse, the injection of drugs and physical torture. Yes, all of these things were portrayed in a video, along with the presence the several alter-egos created by the process. (If you have no idea what I am talking about,
I suggest you read the article entitled Origins and Techniques of Monarch Mind Control).

So Lady Gaga, who is already an alter-persona of Stefanie Germanotta (the real person) has another level of alter-ego that is pretty much the exact opposite of Lady Gaga: Male, dressed in drab clothes, not glamorous, not famous, etc. In Calderone’s long speech at the beginning of the VMAs, Calderone says that Gaga left him and that he wants to be reunited with her.

In occult terms, the union of opposites is called the “Alchemical Wedding” and is often represented by the figure of Baphomet – an androgynous, goat-headed deity. The title Yoü And I represents the union of the two opposite personas, Gaga and Joe Calderone, and, since they are basically same person, this ultimately creates an androgynous entity, not unlike Baphomet. In Kabbalistic lore, androgyny is perceived as the highest level of occult achievement and the concept of duality is strongly instilled in mind control victims. In other words, the presence of Joe Calderone at the VMAs is a big tribute to mind control. Good way to start a show. But Gaga did not stop there. She committed to her persona and played the role of Calderone during the entire show.

        Parents aware!

Gaga looks like a Gladiator helmet ..with or without make up!

I think Tony Bennett’s album will do well too. I’m looking for to hear him sing with Mariah Carey!

  • Dave

I just want to cry watching this. I love Amy.

  • Ethan

You have to appreciate his sentiment, but Winehouse was all her own. Maybe her voice was a classic jazz singer’s, but her songs were about modern things like being drunk and feeling like a f— up. She’s for our time, and her legend seems like it’s already cemented. I might flip on her cd right now.

    • Aletheya

Nothing new or modern about songs about being drunk and fraked up. Plenty of earlier songs about that too. Technology changes, people don’t. But Amy certainly had talent in spades.

  • Polly

Wow such wonderful words from a legend. I’m a huge fan of Dinah Washington, which probably explains some of my deep affection for Amy. Glad she had the experience of recording with Tony.

  • sarah d

I love her impression of her dad.

  • Michael

Very sad this is Amy’s last recording before she died. She and Tony Bennett sounded like they had a really striking connection.

  • Kisha

I can’t wait to see the full video sound good. She looks so put together in this video. It’s still heartbeaking that she is gone.
