'Pop Up Video' reboot: Watch them skewer Britney Spears' 'Till the World Ends'

VH1 announced back in May that it was resurrecting its beloved late ’90s/early ’00s series Pop Up Video, which successfully ran on the cable network (and was its highest-rated series for a time) from 1996 through 2002.

Well, that announcement is about to bear fruit: The show — which famously began the trend of playing back music videos and overlaying them with nuggets of behind-the-scenes info and other funny and/or snarky quips — is set to return Oct. 3.

Below you can check out the updated opening graphics, as well as the Pop Up version of Britney Spears’ apocalyptic dance party video for “Till the World Ends,” which will air in the two episodes that debut on premiere night.

The show’s co-creator Woody Thompson spoke to EW about the enduring legacy that Pop Up Video has in pop culture. “Now, 15 years later, it feels like it’s such a point of pride for people to say they were Pop Up Video fans,” Thompson says. “I get it all the time, people saying, ‘I grew up on Pop Up Video. I was there when it came out!’ It feels like a rock band. It’s a cultural reference that says that you are smart and that you get it and that you don’t just watch TV, you watch cool, smart shows like Pop Up Video.”

One way that VH1 is pulling this reboot of Pop Up Video into the present that’s kinda cool, too, is that they’re allowing fans to create their own videos. On the Pop Up Video homepage, you can choose from current and nostalgic videos and add your own “pops” at will. Of course, you can share via Facebook and Twitter very easily. But on to what you came here for…

Was a big fan of the original run – will check out the new shows. However, it’s a tricky balance between the smart and the snark, and leaning too far either way ruins the whole thing.

The idea of the website is great, especially if they can find a cost-effective way of icorporating viewer pops into future airings of the show – it would great to have slightly different versions run each time!

Sorry, “incorporating” – although “icorporating” would be correct if this were an Apple production!

I love her music and BrideMatchmaker was amazing

  • Christian

Uh.. will it be a weekly thing or daily? What time is it coming on? This article was very informative..

These are kind of mean, right? I don’t remember Pop-Up Video as being mean…

Fan of the original series. Glad it’s coming back. Time to rip these fools who create this brainwashing dreck a new one. Hope it’s as mean and as snarky as possible so as to offend the brainwashed who can do nothing but whine instead of learn why what they like sucks.

I love that Pop Up Video is back, and of course Britney is a goddess, but I don’t need to know an extra farted in front of her.

You don’t “need to know” anything from Pop-Up Video. It’s mindless fun drivel. I remember the clip for “Like a Virgin” popped up the fact that the lion trainer had to ask Madonna if she was on her period…

She look gorgeous in this video!

        drop dead beautiful

Hmmm…I hadn’t realized the original run was that long. Some pop-ups were better than others and some were instant classics; I’m sure that’ll still be the case. Welcome back!

I loved Pop-Up video when it aired but I’m sorry. Are folks even MAKING and SHOWING any videos anymore? It seems that MTV does not show any at all. What was cool about Pop Up Video was we all knew the videos because we saw them together.

  • Jessica

Karen, singers/bands obviously still make videos still because the VMAs air every year. VH1, VH1 Classic and Fuse still run videos.
Pop-Up VIdeo is returning on Oct. 3rd.

      does anyone have a tranquilizer?

      • Eddie

yeah people like “victoria” are the reason why i stopped liking lady gaga. her fans are #1 under 18 years old and #2 wacko and not in a good way. Heads up Britney is awesome. She has been in the music scene for 13 years now. Lady gaga is talented she just isnt original these days. Lets be honest Born This Way wasnt exactly the “album of the decade” It was a bar She set! Femme Fatale imo was way better.
