Coldplay pay tribute to R.E.M. with cover of 'Everybody Hurts': Watch it here

With their deft ability to keep one foot in the underground and the other riding the mainstream wave, R.E.M. have served as a source of inspiration for hundreds of bands who believed they could start out small and gradually become stadium-fillers.

Though they’ve done it in a conflated period of time, Coldplay certainly followed that script, and R.E.M.’s breakup has clearly had a serious impact on frontman Chris Martin. During a concert on Saturday in Atlanta, only about 70 miles west of R.E.M’s hometown of Athens, Martin tipped his hat to his heroes with a cover of “Everybody Hurts.”

“One of our favorite bands of all time, for some crazy reason, have finished,” Martin announced from the stage, introducing his cover. “And it’s sad. Please don’t judge this cover version on its musical merits. See it for the gesture rather than its actual sound. This is just to show how much they meant to us.”

Check out his acoustic run through “Everybody Hurts” — which inspired quite the singalong in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park — after the jump.

Coldplay are currently preparing audiences for the release of their fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto, which will be out on October 24. Considering how well-executed and well-received their “Everybody Hurts” cover was, perhaps they should consider introducing a tribute section into their normal set.

Who wouldn’t want to hear Martin rip into “Man on the Moon” or “Nightswimming”? In a parallel universe, couldn’t “Imitation of Life” have been a Coldplay song? And how did Michael Stipe not write “Yellow”? Leave your Coldplay cover requests in the comments below.

    ugh, too whiney.

    • PN

But this is a song that the band Coldplay personally likes. So what if Chris Martin doesn’t do it vocally like Michael Stipe on the song. This is his way of singing it.

you’re right, PN. there are several covers that i love but are generally disliked by others.

        and i actually like Coldplay.

IMO, “Everybody Hurts” is such a gem that covering it seems like a daunting task (though one i’m sure Chris Martin can handle deftly, i simply didn’t like this cover of it)

so question to you and all others: are there some songs out there that are so great they shouldn’t be touched?

My best friend has just announced her wedding with a great man who is a celebrity!
        They met via { himillionaires*c’o’m}
It is nice club for rich men or pretty girls mate.
You do not need to be wealthy or famous, but you can meet your true love, it’s worthy a try.

Right, because Michael Stipe has such a full, non-whiney voice.

what? way to show your knowledge of REM. Michael Stipe has range. he doesn’t always sing 3 octaves above mid-range.
Ref: “Low”, “Belong” on album Out of Time. tell me his voice sounds whiney after hearing those songs. you’d be lying.

    • Jan

Yeah, and it’s not like he gave any disclaimers or anything. He was all, “This is the best version of this song you’ll ever hear!”

I saw Coldplay shortly after Michael Jackson’s death in ’09, and they did an acoustic version of ‘Billie Jean’ on a very small stage in the back of the ampitheater. It sounded pretty bizarre, but you could tell the band was into it. Unexpected, but cool.

They did play Nightswimming WITH Michael Stipe in Atlanta in ’05!

    • asher

      yeah, that was pretty great.

Chris also sang Man on the Moon with the band during one of REM’s gigs, not sure which one and as Jeff said, played piano on Nightswimming during Austin City Limits in 2005.

Classy, smart move from a current band in Coldplay to pay tribute to R.E.M. in their concert, who announced their ending as a band last week. And even in that Atlanta concert, about 70 miles from R.E.M.’s base in Athens.

That was all kinds of awesome. I love Coldplay, and I have been an REM fan since 1984, so this was just… amazing for me. Thanks!

“Everybody Hurts” . . . When Coldplay attempts to create what they perceive as being music. Also, another species of animal becomes extinct too.

Coldplay always do such great covers when artists they respect do something of note. I loved their rendition of “I’m a Believer” performed by The Monkees at my show in Hartford during the Viva tour. So good.

  • Tony

Coldplay made a gracious gesture to REM. That is good enough for me.
