Report: Madonna to play Super Bowl XLVI halftime show?

It’s a good thing no NFL team has hydrangeas as a mascot.

The sports website SB Nation is reporting that Madonna will take to the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to perform during the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show.

The NFL is not commenting, and when reached by EW, Madonna’s rep says there’s “nothing to confirm at this point” — which is about as soft a “no comment” as one gets.

So is it possible? Last month, Ms. Ciccone told reporters while promoting her film W.E. that she’s been recording a new album with producers William Orbit (who helmed her 1998 album Ray of Light) and French DJ Martin Solveig (of the inescapable “Hello”).

The aim was to release a new single in the winter, with the album out Spring, 2012. And you know what’s an excellent way to immediately inject yourself back into the zeitgeist to promote your first album in over three years? Performing for the biggest television audiences in the country.

But is it a good idea? It certainly would be in keeping with Super Bowl halftime tradition of the past few years, which featured the likes of The Who, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince, and the Rolling Stones — iconic artists still beloved, but also well past their prime chart-topping days. (We’ll just agree to forget the Black Eyed Peas TRON-ification of the Super Bowl XLV halftime.)

The common thread with all those acts was their real connection with the general football-watching audience; the Madonna-fan/football-fan Venn diagram doesn’t quite have as much overlap.

So, hmm. What do you make of the prospect of Madonna headlining the Super Bowl, Mixers? Do you think it’s a great idea? Or a great idea…for Super Bowl XXVIII?

I think Prince should perform every couple of years. He was amazing a few years ago. Earth, Wind and Fire would be great also. They have timeless songs that appeal to a large demographic.

    • Kimberly Joran

I TOTALLY AGREE! I flew to see him at Madison Square Garden last year and he has not missed a beat!!

      • wowowowowow

Madonna- The Epitome of Mother of All show businesses; Love what she does !

Prince? Earth, Wind & Fire? Yawn.

      • Madonna The Icon

the best of the year !!!!!!!

      • Bring It On

cant wait for Madonna’s new music. This new album is going to be an epic…..!!!!!!

      • lori

I could wait a while. Actually I would just keep waiting and never mind that it didn’t come out.

    • Lily

How exactly is being a Prince fan or a Madonna fan and being a football fan mutually exclusive? I know plenty of football fans (men and women) who also happen to be fans of classic pop and classic rock.

    • so excited

      thank is not Lady Gaga!

      • lori

This one is as old as your grandma and thinks she is still just as awesome as Lady Gaga. Thats all.

      • Hhahaha

Cant wait to see what Lady Gaga want to copy from Madonna’s new image and album!

      • Mike

So what if she is older. She has developed an awesome stage presence from her numerous sold out tours. Youth is wasted on the young.

  • ^

Aren’t there any major decent artists anymore?

    • S.O.

I am willing to bet you that either Green Day or Pearl Jam will perform a Super Bowl Halftime show in the next 10 years. They both could pull it off.

    • iggy

The Foo Fighters would do an awesome halftime show.

      • S.O.

oh ya. They’re could pull that off too.

      • Monty

The Foo Fighters NEED to do the halftime show. That would be perfect.

      • lori

My vote would be for the foo fighters verses having Madonna ruin the super bowl half time. Although anything would be an improvement from the black eyed peas and the green puke neon ridiculousness.

    • Abby

Ok, I am going to give away my age. How about some good old rock and roll like the Eagles or the Doobie brothers?

  • Soldier

Madonna Forever! She will be awesome!

    • lori

She is almost old enough to be at forever.

      • christian

lori get a life , you love madonna and you know it!

      • Giulio

One day, if you are lucky, you will be older too. I hope that you look as amazing as Madonna when you are 53

      • Miguel

@ lori ……..U statement makes U think that ALL females will stay young forever. Lady Gaga if she is lucky will get old as Madonna, But who is too say if she will be around in the enterainment world as long as Madonna has? And if you look close, Lady Gaga at 25 looks older than Madonna when she was at that age. Madonna is NOT about who has the best/greatest voice, this is a big event she is ALL about putting a great show and I know she will just like her concerts, tours and awards shows.

      • Mr. T

        Lori, you’re an idiot.

  • eric

Ray of Light…not Ray of Life
Think she’d be awesome…but i’m sure they’d be afraid of what she might do/say on live tv lol

  • Kevin

    Ray of Life??? Really??

  • midori

    Bon Jovi!!!

  • Flip

Madonna? Sweet! A reason for this gay boy to actually watch the Superbowl for once!

  • JJ

She’s one of our few genuine music icons. As much as some might protest they are not a “fan” of hers we all know her songs and her performance will have one amazing hit after another. She’s been in the biz for about 3 DECADES and still going strong! Loving this!

  • Dimitri

The Black Keys should play the Super Bowl. How awesome would that be? Just 2 guys rocking out in front of 100+ million people.

    • RadioHEAD1234

      Hell yeah

  • scytherius

    Oh God PLEASE no.

    • Dede

By “play” the halftime show, I assume they mean lipsync? I don’t think she has sung anything live in twenty years.

      • HoneyB

She sings all her concerts live (with the exception of “Vogue” which she lipsynchs on purpose as part of the artifice being espoused in the song. She’s not perfect live, but she’s singing.

      • Nora

Have been to every tour and she always sings live.

      • robin

        she should just retire gracefully

      • RAJ

You’ve obviously never been to a Madonna concert, Dede. Not only does she sing every song live (including Vogue), she also performs intricate and physically demanding choreography, almost continuously throughout her 2 hour shows. And, she’s never out of breath or sounds winded, the results of her commitment to excersise and conditionig This is the reason that 95% of all Madonna shows sell OUT. Many of them within a few hours after tickets go on sale. Madonna holds the record for the HIGHEST GROSSING TOUR IN HISTORY FOR SOLO ARTIST. Second highest grossing tour of all time, behind U2. She’s beaten her own record three times in the last ten years. The point I’m trying to make is she does not lipsynch, ever! Not many people would pay up $400 a ticket to see her lipsynch and dance. Lipsynchers are not members of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, they are not icons and they would never be referred to as a king or queen of their music genre.

  • JLP

That’s one halftime show I’d watch if not host a party for!!!!

  • PDT

While I’m sure her performance would be fine, it’s completely the wrong venue for it. That said, it would be a huge step up from the Black Eyed Peas’ “performance” last year, even if misplaced.

    • RobNJ

They were awful what little I saw. I usually just time dinner for halftime. Make a nice stew and let it simmer all day. Then again I am a sports fan and actually watch the game.

    • Well get her..

I agree—I think Madonna is not the right artist for something like the Super Bowl. However, you can guarantee she’ll try her damnedest to put on a show.

      • Linda

It is really a shame that nobody has the balls to stand up to that lady and just say “i’m sorry but this is the superbowl”.

  • Phil

When the story started circulating round lunchtime I had a conversation with a friend of mine who is a gay 21 yr old guy, he asked is she even popular anymore? It saddened me, that this is what that geeneration thinks of an artist who has paved the way for every Ke$ha, Katy perry or even Pink. Is she even popular? And I had to stop to put myself in his shoes. The only popular radio single he has in recent memory is “4 Minutes”, so I get it..but I also hope that this happens, as it would be an awesome platform to launch her new project and actually give a full blown half time show of popular hits.
I mean its a win win. No matter what two teams are playing, gay men, who are notorious for never watching sports other than to check out hot players would tune in, and the ratings would be even bigger than normal. Also, her new disc would is gonna be the first of the real LiveNation 360 deals…so why not doi everything you can to promote it? This is actually a marketing wet dream come if it happens.

    • Phil

      *come true if it happens

    • Jon

      Hell to the ‘YEAH”

    • shewbie

      Nicely put Phil.

    • Well get her..

“is she even popular anymore?” What a pretentious little douchebag. It doesn’t take anyone with half a brain to realize that Madonna just came off the most successful tour for a solo artist in history, that practically any move the woman makes is covered by the media, and that when her next album comes out it will automatically become an “event.” I hope you gave this little b!tch a major eyeroll.

  • LOL

    America loves crap.

    • robin

      that explains this mess

  • angeljake

    Love Madge :)
