Though you have probably been distracted by the excitement of the NFL season — in which the New York Jets simply refuse to make anything easy, or play well, or even hint at the fact that they might possibly be good — Major League Baseball launched its playoffs over the coming weekend, opening the doors on four Divisional Series match-ups.
It’s uncertain who will be left standing when it comes time to play the World Series (which, at the rate these games are being played, should happen some time in February), we do know who will be honoring America when it comes time to throw that first pitch.
American Idol winner Scotty McCreery is slated to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the first game of the World Series on October 19. Being that he’s from North Carolina, it’s probably safe to assume that McCreery is a Braves fan, which means he has spent the last six weeks being sorely disappointed.
Since the National League won this year’s All-Star Game, the Series will open in the NL champ’s park, which means that McCreery will be crooning live from Milwaukee, Philadelphia, or St. Louis. (Sorry, Diamondbacks fans, but your squad isn’t going to make up that 2-0 deficit against the Brew Crew.)
While “The Star-Spangled Banner” is extremely easy to mess up (just ask Christina Aguilera), a great rendition can really add to the grandeur of a particular sporting event.
Just last night, before the Jets choked like dogs against the Baltimore Ravens in one of the more absurd contests of the young football season, Martina McBride took the microphone and totally knocked the anthem out of the park. Follow the jump to see the sort of performance McCreery has to follow.
Scotty McCreery’s debut album Clear As Day hits stores tomorrow. Look for the review of the record (along with Idol runner-up Lauren Alaina’s Wildflower) in the issue of Entertainment Weekly out this Friday.

Um, are the trials of the Jets really lede-worthy in a post about who will sing the anthem in the baseball playoffs?
Thanks for assuming everyone must be interested in New York teams. If you ever apply to work for ESPN you should use this as a clip.
That article was really strange. Everything about the Jets had no relation to the story, and if it was an attempt to make the story funny, it just fell flat. Also didn’t really get the reference to the rate the games are being played. Baseball playoffs are not slow. Even the Yankees-Tigers series that had a rain out is making it up by not having any days off.
I am assuming it is compairing the singers…..but yea I agree. Not watching but good luck Scotty
Sure Scotty will do a great job!!! Was so happy for him when he won American Idol!
Scotty is actually a Red Sox fan!
omg i love your song i love you this big its my favorite country song and you got pretty eyes;)
His rendition svcks.
Maybe Fox can find an American Idol who actually knows the words to America’s national anthem.
“No say does that star-spangled banner yet wave…”
What?! You’re kidding me, right?
