Charlie Daniels Band keyboardist Joel 'Taz' DiGregorio dies in car crash on the way to a performance

The-Devil-Went-Down

Longtime Charlie Daniels Band keyboardist and co-writer of legendary country-rock yarn “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” Joel “Taz” DiGregorio died on Wednesday night (October 12) in a single-car accident. He was 67 years old.

DiGregorio’s car flipped over on Interstate 40 just west of Nashville. He was on his way to Georgia for a concert, which was subsequently canceled.

“It won’t be easy without him,” Daniels told the Associated Press. “He was an intricate part of our sound for 40 years. If you listened to our records, you could hear Taz all over them.”

Daniels noted that while tomorrow night’s show in Connecticut had also been canceled, he would resume performances next weekend in Oklahoma, with the band carrying on short one member.

“I won’t replace him now,” Daniels said. “I can’t come to grips with replacing him right now, but I will.”

How tragic. The fact that he played with Charlie Daniels for 40 years is a testament to what a loyal and talented person he was. Praying for comfort for all his friends and family.

Went to Junior High School with his son, Blake. He always spoke well of his dad even though he hardly saw him (due to being on tour). I could see that he took care of his family which is a great thing in this day and age.

Wow! Just heard about Taz’s accident from an old friend. We go way back on music by the CDB and Taz has been a part of it every step of the way. His distinct style has always been a big part of their music and we will all miss it.
First and foremost to his family, to Charlie, and all his friends, I want to pass along my condolences for your huge loss. You are in my prayers.
