Demi Lovato can singggg.

Last night before Game 5 of the 2011 World Series at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, the 19-year-old hit a home run with her rendition of the National Anthem.

Looking happy and healthy in a red Texas T-shirt and matching red all-American lips, the raspy-voiced popstar played to her strengths,  giving a restrained, ballad-esque performance before the big finish. Cue the fireworks:

Thoughts? How does this compare to Zooey Deschanel’s version from the previous night? Who does your favorite rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner”?

Much prefer Zooey’s more mellow version but still very good.

    • James

That wasn’t Mellow. That was called bordem. big difference dear.

      • James

Sorry guys for being so obsessive. I love music so much it makes me go crazy and call everyone idiots. It’s a problem I have when I get online.

      • James

Looks like I got my first stan lol. Hey the truth hurts you know? You have to be an idiot to think that Zooey D’s coma like rendition was some how inspiring lol. Stick to Rebecca black love.

    • James

If you prefer Zooey then you must have been asleep through the game.

    • Adam

I haven’t heard that, but if’s anything like Zooey’s “work” with She & Him, it’s probably boring and off-key. Zooey is just a cute chick who can’t sing or act.

  • Karen

Much preferred Zooey’s more mellow version but overall very good.

  • Yesenia

    She did that song proud

  • Chase

It’s very revealing when an artist sings a capella. Demi has a big voice, for sure, but I had no idea it was so wobbly. And I felt she was fighting the key throughout entire the song. And the end toed the “beauty line” with her sustained notes (shouts?). I consider myself a fan of Miss Lovato, but I must say, I’m a bit disappointed.

    • Shannon

Agreed. I thought Zooey’s was WAY better and Demi was shouting notes.

      • James

YOu confuse voice projection with shouting oh stupid one. might I suggest a vocal coach for you?

      • JoeChief

Hey Shannon, before you give an opinion on who is better and who isn’t, I would appreciate it if you didn’t confuse voice projecting with shouting. Please love? That way you don’t sound like an unintelligent tw@t.

That being said I agree whoever said that reading Zooey’s version was like listening to elevator music on lithium.

    • James

First off, you’re an idiot. That goes without saying. You really are mentally stupid if you felt that she was fighting the key throughout the entire song. Its called EMBELLISHMENT oh inept one. Second your inability comprehend vocal projection amazes me. Do go back to school and learn a thing or two about singing before you post deary.

      • Shawn

James – You’re pretty heavy handed for someone that obviously has no ear. Everyone in my house (musicians all) started wincing during her butchery.

      • james

Well then everyone in your house must either be stupid, tone deaf, really crappy musicians or they were listening to a completely different video. I would say its a combination of the first three shawny. Oh and playing the triangle and banging on pots and pans does not count as being a musician.

    • JoeChief

Chase, what you call WOBBLY is what we refer to in the real world as BREATHING. General breath has that “wobble factor to it” especially those who hold notes. Its not called fighting the key throughout the entire song if she was ON KEY for the song. Which she was. For the most part she was pretty much on key with that actual tune. You have to be tone deaf to not hear it. Also are you really gonna call her octave raising shouting? You don’t sound very educated dear.

  • Caleb

    Please make it stop

    • James

      Please off yourself :-)

Were we watching the same thing? I thought she was pretty bad. Way oversung, practically sounded like she was screaming parts of it.

And can no female singer hold a steady note anymore, without all that…I don’t even know what it’s called, but its that alternating pitch or whatever on a single note, and it sounds weak.

    • GinaBallerina

I think what you’re referring to is called melisma.

      • James

: a group of notes or tones sung on one syllable in plainsong
        2
        : melodic embellishment

So her Melisma was just fine/ You’re just an idiot.

    • Bobby’s Robot

It’s called not being able to hold a note.

      • James

No its called embellishment. She held the note fine. You’re just an idiot.

      • JoeChief

Actually it’s called “bobby’s Robot doesn’t have proper eye cordination and has a sever hearing impediment” Are you sure you are a trained actor and not just some old coot who is just full of piss and blood because it didn’t sound like a pre recorded version on 8 track?

    • M

I would agree with you, but modify your comment from “female singer” to “female pop star.” There are a whole bunch of Broadway ladies who would sing giant circles around these pop “stars.” And a few who could even dance and sustain crazy notes at the same time!

      • James

Obviously you were not watching the same video as the rest of us if you confuse voice projection with screaming. Did you get your musical education from a box of mallow mars something like that? I would call you a pseudo intellectual light weight moron but…that would be giving you too much credit. I’ll just buy you an ice cream and send you on your way :)

      • M

what a fantastically well thought out and persuasive argument. You have now convinced me that the vocal stylings of Ms. Lovato are on par with the vocal greats of yesterday and today. Shame on me for thinking otherwise.

      • James

Lol your play at sarcasm is about as amusing as your entire underlying argument. I mean comparing Demi lovato, a vocalist to theatrical singing? That’s just purr brilliance m. Seriously it is. What are you gonna do next? Compare van halen to coletrain? Real impeccable analogy skills there slick.

      • JoeChief

M it is very hard to take you seriously when you are comparing broad way singers, to concert performers. I mean really? Are you really going to compare two different genre’s to each other like this and make such a broad generalization? That would be like comparing Jazz to techno. I’m really flabbergasted by your ignorance you have just displayed.

    • James

B Obviously you were not watching the same video as the rest of us if you confuse voice projection with screaming. Did you get your musical education from a box of mallow mars something like that? I would call you a pseudo intellectual light weight moron but…that would be giving you too much credit. I’ll just buy you an ice cream and send you on your way :)

    • James

“Were we watching the same thing?”

Apparently not. I was watching a stellar performance of a gifted singer. You seem to have fallen asleep or was watching some garbage like Zooey D.

“I thought she was pretty bad.”

I’m sorry this didn’t have any rebbecca Black to your liking. Pershasp you feel that the ICP is considered classical music as well?

“Way oversung, practically sounded like she was screaming parts of it.”
No sorry you’re wrong./ There was no over singing and or screaming. You are confusing that with vocal projection and embelishment. Then again you are a half wit so thats to be expected.

“And can no female singer hold a steady note anymore, without all that…I don’t even know what it’s called,”
Again it’s called Vocal embelishment which you or foreign to. Stick to your pre recorded soundtrack of elevator music friendo. Leave the real music to the adults.

“but its that alternating pitch or whatever on a single note, and it sounds weak.”
Sorry but weak is your underlying argument. This is actually pretty strong. You’re just stupid :)

      • Jeff

TheElderWand42 on September 25, 2008 CE here is really good! But she still doesn’t beat Anne Harada and Yanle Zhong, but still she is Good!!.

      • shahzad

Why y’all acting like she was super ersdepsed when her and Joe broke up dudes ! She wasn’t y’all acting like it was the worst thing that ever happened to? her as you can see she was NOT heartbroken and no they definitely were NOT meant to be . But y’all have yalls own opinions ! But love you Demi !:)

    • JoeChief

I don’t know if we were B, but you were listening to something else if you thought she was screaming parts of this. Is it me or are most of Demi’s haters musically retarded? Oversinging would entail some strained parts to this. There was nothing strained about it at all. And she couldn’t hold a steady not anymore? I guess you missed the last part of the song with the “and the home of the brave” What’s weak is your entire argument and you calling this “alternating pitch”. Although reading your post was entertaining for all the wrong reasons B lol.

    • Sophia

That’s called vibrato. Vibrato is that “wobbly-ness” you’re talking about and that’s how you hold a note. Get educated before you go posting what you have no idea about. This was an amazing rendition of the National Anthem. On key the entire time and projected like a boss. You Go Demi!!

  • MrMew55

Huh? She was horrible!!! The woman can’t sing a note – and when was improvising the tune of our National Anthem considered acceptable – oh, I get it, that’s just the way you sing when you can’t carry a tune! I don’t know who this untalented b***h is but god forbid I should ever have to listen to her caterwauling again!

    • James

She sang it on key. That is fact. She may have added to it but she sang it on Key. Are you saying that you prefer Zooey D’s boring rendition to this one which was full of emotive emphasis? IF you knew anything about music you wouldn’t say she can’t carry a tune. Enroll yourself in a basic hearing course dear. You suck at common sense.

    • James

“Huh? She was horrible!!! The woman can’t sing a note –“
I guess you weren’t listening to the same video we were. I assume you covet some crap like ICP or what not? Stick to being a Juggalo douche.

“and when was improvising the tune of our National Anthem considered acceptable –“
When people decided to raise asthetic standards to not be bored by uninspired renditions by Zooey D? Moron.

“oh, I get it, that’s just the way you sing when you can’t carry a tune!”
If she couldn’t carry a tune then she wouldn’t have a record deal. You’re just a half wit idiot.

“I don’t know who this untalented b***h is”
She’s someone that got your attention lol. So thank you for giving her a career boost idiot :)

“but god forbid I should ever have to listen to her caterwauling again!”
And god forbid that you listen to music in general without sounding like some half wit with no intelligence. Seriously dude, did you get your musical education from a box of cereal?

      • Reader

lolI love your stanning James! Demi was amazing #lovaticforlife

  • just me

Ugh, struggling with the key the whole song; high notes were strained and painful. Who writes this stuff? Are you tone deaf? The media beat up Scotty mccreery last week and he was 100 times better.

    • James

She wasn’t struggling. Struggling would mean she was strained. There was nothing strained about this performance. You’re just like every other idiot who supports a boring half asleep bimbo like Zooey D. Go back to sleep sweetie. I’lll wake you up when you can appreciate real talent.

    • James

“Ugh, struggling with the key the whole song;”
Ok from this sentence its safe to assume you have no idea what you are talking about.

“high notes were strained and painful.”
Again you confuse strained with…well there was nothing strained here. You’re just an idiot.

“Who writes this stuff? Are you tone deaf?”
      1. People who know what they are talking about. 2. No but you are :)

“The media beat up Scotty mccreery last week and he was 100 times better.”
ahahahahaha! Thats funny. Oh wait you were serious…i forgot you’re tone deaf lol.

    • JoeChief

I’m starting to think all of her nay Sayers are just the same person since you keep using the same argument over and over again yet clearly show no evidence of your claim and you clearly show no knowledge about what you are saying. You come off sounding like a moron. Yet a general invalid would probably sound more intelligent than you,. Her high notes were not strained. That would show some RASP to her voice, Which she didn’t have for those High notes. The question is are YOU tone deaf to confuse octave raising with strained? I think I answered my own question.

  • RScott

I didn’t see it live but I think this webshot is the reason it sounds wobbly. Did anyone see it live and how did it sound on HD TV? Nevertheless it gave me chills like few other songs.

  • Ace

She’s got talent, but this was not a good performance for her, overall. It had some nice moments, but I think she was just too nervous (and maybe too inexperienced) to do this song justice.

    • James

Actually she did this song better than most people. Unlike Christina A who forgot the words and Zooey D who pretty much fell asleep during her performance. Are you high or something?

  • Bus Driver

My hubby was watching from another room… I thought it was spectacular, and even asked him, “who IS that?”

  • Samantha

Thanks. I missed this last night and really wanted to see this!

  • ?????

I think Jennifer Hudsons at the Super Bowl is the best!

  • Michael

I thought her performance was awful. Just my opinion, but she was not experienced enough to pull that off.

    • James

Well then your opinion is stupid. Aside for a few idiot nay sayers her performance has gotten positive responses. Maybe you prefer a nice nap rather than a game of base ball. By all means watch Zooey D’s rendition then.

      • Devin

You wasn’t good. She was yelling the high notes and going off key.

      • James

No that is called Voice projection. Not yelling. And there was nothing off key about this. You just suck at common sense Devin.

      • Pricillia

Those are not symptoms of lung cncaer there are no symptoms for that until its too late. But still, those would not be the signs of cncaer. All of the things that u described somes just like anxiety/panick attack. When she goes to the doc, after he rules out this, that, and the other ..tell her to get a script for anxiety.

  • Bobby’s Robot

I remember she sang the anthem at a Thanksgiving NFL game a few years ago. I wanted to reach into the TV and shove a yam in her mouth to make the horror stop. Every time I accidentally hear a bit of her yowling her Skyscraper song, I remember that day with a shudder.

    • James

      You probably also don’t know jack squat about music. You’re an idiot kid;

      • Bobby’s Robot

Ha! I’m 50, and a musical theatre actor. And looking at your numerous and quite possibly psychotic postings here, you show all the signs of a delusional stalker. I think Ms. Lovato would do well to get a restraining order against you. Love, one of the “stupid” “idiots”.

      • James

Well then it’s safe to say that you’ve been studying music wrong for the past 50 years. Seriously dude whoever you got your musical theater education has not treated you well friendo. My suggestion is that you stick your head underneath the earth until you black out. You might wake up in a time period where we take the opinions of a crazy old codger seriously. Until then you’re just fodder for people with real love for music. Feel free to fall asleep at zooey d’s coma like rendition.
