Tonight’s 12-12-12 benefit for Hurricane Sandy victims has turned into a musical juggernaut, with everyone from the Rolling Stones to Kanye West signing on for the Madison Square Garden-hosted event.

And just when you thought that they’d run out of names to add to the lineup, this happens: Nirvana survivors Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear will be playing together as a band again — with Paul McCartney.

But don’t worry, Macca won’t be doing any Kurt Cobain impressions. According to reports, this new venture will resist the urge to play any actual Nirvana songs. Instead, Sir Paul will be debuting a new song that he and Grohl have been secretly working on in the studio. As McCartney told the British Sun, it all started when he decided to ring Grohl up one day and got invited to “jam with some mates.”

And it just so happened that those mates used to play together as Nirvana twenty years ago. “I didn’t really know who they were,” the Beatle said. “They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’ And somebody whispered to me, ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”

Unless McCartney was just having a very vivid dream, the world will get to see what he and the guys came up with when the 12-12-12 concert goes down tonight. (Also, he’ll be playing Saturday Night Live this weekend, so keep an eye on that too.)

If you can’t be at the show in New York, come back here to the Music Mix at 7 p.m. ET, where we’ll be streaming the entire concert live (and providing a full recap tomorrow as well).
