Paging all pop culture aca-fficianados: Pitch Perfect may actually have a chart hit on its hands — more than three months after the movie’s release.
The a cappella comedy wasn’t exactly an Avengers-sized blockbuster; it grossed a respectable $65 million during its theatrical run, but today, almost four months after its release, the little film that could is still thriving in the tweets/posts/minds of fans. Pitch Perfect appears to have achieved instantaneous cult status — you might say it’s this generation’s Bring It On, another über-choreographed, girl-centric musical comedy.
Now that Pitch Perfect is out on DVD/Blu-ray, Anna Kendrick, the film’s star, is enjoying something few other Hollywood actresses ever get a taste of: a single on Billboard‘s Hot 100.
Yep, Kendrick’s solo tune “Cups,” which uses the cup-drumming rhythm popularized in viral videos by Erato and Lennon and Maisy (as well as summer camps across the country), has climbed all the way to number 68 on the all-genre chart — an impressive feat for any song, much less one that’s only one minute and 17 seconds long. (The full Pitch Perfect soundtrack sold 212,000 copies in 2012 following its September 25 release.)
Kendrick performed a bit of “Cups” on The Late Show last October. Check it out below:
What say you about the success of “Cups?” Surprised?
