What do former Republican politician Todd Akin and current Miami rapper Rick Ross have in common? Rape flubs, apparently.
Maybach Music mogul Ross is currently drowning in a torrent of negative press thanks to his date-rapey lyrics on the track “U.O.E.N.O.,” which was released on a mixtape from rapper Rocko back in February. The ill-advised portion of the song in question go a little something like this:
“Put molly all in her champagne/She ain’t even know it/I took her home and I enjoyed that/She ain’t even know it.”
Clearly, the line has upset a lot of people. [If the controversy isn't as clear to you, it might help to know that "molly" is the slang Young People use for the supposedly purest form of MDMA (which is ecstasy, basically).] Aiding the uproar is the recent highly publicized rape case out of Stuebenville, Ohio, which raised national awareness of how both date-rape and more “traditional” definitions of rape are both, simply, rape.
As the Huffington Post points out, journalist Rosa Clemente is one of the more prominent voices expressing displeasure for the song, saying, “This lyric is obviously promoting rape. Not just date rape, but rape and rape culture and violence against women. We live in a society by the time that African American women and Latina women are 18, almost half of them — 44 percent — have been sexually abused.”
Meanwhile, Urban Daily editor Jerry Barrow wrote in a post, “If she didn’t know she didn’t give consent… she was raped. You’re out here telling your fans that it’s cool to rape women and YOU don’t even know it.” The popular African-American culture blog the Root also entered the dialogue, saying, “No metaphors, no guesswork, and no subtlety here. Ross recorded bars about drugging a woman and then raping her.”
