HAPPY ENDINGS (ABC)
The song: Kenny Loggins, “Playing With the Boys”
The episode: “Deuce Babylove 2: Electric Babydeuce” (322)
The hook: In last Friday’s season — and perhaps series — finale, Max (Adam Pally) and Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) clearly brought more style than skill to a tennis match underscored by Loggins’ 1986 synth-sation (a.k.a. the song from Top Gun‘s beach volleyball face-off). Though we can’t say the same for Max, who took more hits than Snoop Lion, we enjoyed every second of the friends’ trouncing by super-competitive hubbies Brad (Damon Wayans, Jr.) and Jane (Eliza Coupe).

The song: “Wings,” originally by Little Mix, and “Clarity,” originally by Zedd feat. Foxes
The episode: “All or Nothing” (422)
The hook: Though Rachel (Lea Michele) turned in another divalightful performance via Celine Dion’s “To Love You More” last night, the greatest girl power on the jukebox soap’s season 4 finale came from American Idol season 11 runner-up Sanchez, who guest-starred as a rival group’s soloist at Regionals and blew the roof off with a couple of summer-ready dancers — Zedd feat Fox’s “Clarity” and the clap-happy “Wings” from The X Factor U.K.‘s chart-topping girl group Little Mix.

The song: Depeche Mode, “Soothe My Soul”
The episode: “Ghosts of the Past” (1321)
The hook: Dave Gahan sang an ominous “I’m comin’ for you” as Sara (Jorja Fox) and Nick (George Eads) analyzed fingerprints on Wednesday’s installment. Watch out baddies! (Bonus working song: “Default” by Atoms for Peace, which played as Henry (Jon Wellner) got down to business in the lab.)
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (The CW)
The song: Alpine, “Hands”
The episode: “Date Night” (121)
The hook: A cool-down and a warming up… At the beginning of last night’s installment, Aussie indie outfit Alpine’s mellow tune played after Cat (Kristin Kreuk) and Tess (Nina Lisandrello) wrapped a workout. During the 59th minute, Foy Vance’s “Guiding Light” provided ambient undertones as Cat affirmed once more to Vincent (Jay Ryan) that she was committed to riding life and love’s rollercoaster. As they spoke of children and a future together, the lyrics “When I need to get home you’re my guiding light” showed that these two crazy kids might just have a shot.
ARROW (The CW)
The song: Imagine Dragons, “Radioactive”
The episode: “Darkness on the Edge of Town” (122)
The hook: When the conversation ends in reunion sex, did it really matter how long Oliver (Stephen Amell) waited to tell Laurel (Katie Cassidy) his true feelings? That’d be a big nope! The Vegas foursome’s latest radio hit closed out Wednesday’s ep as Olly and Laurel unleashed their nuclear passion for each other. But the fallout is only just beginning — Laurel’s boyfriend Tommy (Colin Donnell) got an eyeful as he passed by on the street below.

THE OFFICE (NBC)*
The song: Snow Patrol, “Open Your Eyes”
The episode: “A.A.R.M.” (922/23)
The hook: As we’ve noted, it’s been a rough season for Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer), but as the series nears its five-hanky finale, the colleague-turned-spouses are making moves toward reconnecting. Case in point: Jim, with some help from the doc crew, prepared a video montage to the Irish rockers’ 2007 song that helped remind Pam — and us — why they fell in love in the first place.

NEW GIRL (Fox)
The song: Lucius, “Until We Get There”
The episode: “Winston’s Birthday” (224)
The hook: Though Brooklyn quintet Lucius ended up provided the soundtrack for Winston’s (Lamorne Morris) “surprise” birthday party, it was the lingering look between Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) that made this an instant get-thee-to-my-iPod tune for Newbies.

The song: Gloriana, “Can’t Shake You”
The episode: “On the Road Again” (222)
The hook: As the Nashville trio stopped by the Rammer Jammer on Dixie‘s May 7 finale, Zoe (Rachel Bilson) departed for New York to extricate herself from romantic drama with Wade (Wilson Bethel) and George (Scott Porter)—though this midtempo ballad about love’s tight grip revealed distance alone wouldn’t be what the doctor ordered.
The song: Tegan and Sara, “I Was a Fool”
The episode: “Indecent Exposure” (305)
The scene: Though cohabitation proved unsustainable for Jenna (Ashley Rickards) and Matty (Beau Mirchoff), Tuesday’s episode closed with a makeup kiss and a dreamy reunion tune from the ep’s guest music supervisors.
The song: Jonathan Jackson, “The Morning of the Rain (Roadie Version)”
The episode: “Why Don’t You Love Me” (119)
The hook: “Oh, can you hear me when I’m fallin’, fallin’?” After last week’s steamy hook-up, Deacon (Charles Esten) and Rayna (Connie Britton) reaffirmed they were both in this relationship for the long haul as Avery (Jackson) performed a pared down version of the original heart-stopper.
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (CBS)
The song: Wilco, “How To Fight Loneliness”
The episode: “Something Old” (823)
The hook: Ted (Josh Radnor) found redemption in the rain Monday as he advised a bedraggled, bereft Robin (Cobie Smulders) to ignore signs from the universe that she shouldn’t marry Barney (Neil Patrick Harris). Ted was doing his best to be a good friend (and person), but Wilco’s melancholy fake-it-’til-you-make-it B-side from ’99 — not to mention the pining stare between the two of them — implied this might not be a moment when fighting one’s true feelings is the best course of action.

CRIMINAL MINDS (CBS)
The song: Esthero feat. Jonah Johnson, “Crash”
The episode: “Nanny Dearest” (821)
The hook: JJ (A.J. Cook) was deeply affected by this week’s case tracking a serial murderer of nannies. Seeing the vulnerability of caregivers, she reflected on her own husband and son. She rejoined them at home at the end of Wednesday’s episode, giving her husband a tight, meaningful hug, as she thought of a Maya Angelou poem: “Alone, all alone. Nobody, but nobody. Can make it out here alone.” Underneath this, Esthero’s delicate piano ballad urged, “Come on in the sun, When you’re scared, can face it down. ‘Cause here I am. You will not be alone.”
GREY’S ANATOMY (ABC)
The song: Sleeping at Last, “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”
The episode: “Readiness is All” (923)
The hook: A flashmob proposal to The Proclaimers’ 1993 one-hit wonder put the song in a joyous note in the second half of Thursday’s Grey‘s. But by the end, as Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) kissed not-her-wife Lauren (Hilarie Burton) to Sleeping At Last’s downbeat cover, the song took on a morose air. Doesn’t look like damage from the storm that rolled through Seattle last night will be cleaned up any time soon.

The song: Gene Pitney, “Something’s Gotten Hold of My Heart”
The episode: “Red John’s Rules” (522)
The song: One step forward, seven carnie steps back. Though Lisbon (Robin) returned a vic’s baby to her family, Red John continued to elude Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) as the season concluded this past Sunday. Pitney sings dolefully that “Something’s got a hold of my heart, keepin’ my soul and my senses apart… wading through my dreams like a knife, turning me up and turning me down” in the 1967 gem, showing that Patrick’s got a long way to go — and a lot of emotional turmoil in store — until this case is closed.

MAD MEN (AMC)
The song: Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, “Baby Jane (Mo-Mo Jane)”
The episode: “For Immediate Release” (606)
The hook: A nice rev-up from previous sad-trombone-ish songs this season, the Motor City minstrels’ 1965 bouncer helped Roger (John Slattery) and Don (Jon Hamm) get on their game faces as they headed to make an important pitch to Chevrolet this past Sunday.
