Trent Reznor and David Lynch are ideal compatriots: Both are obsessed with industrial sounds, both are fixated on the idea of evil, and both have an affinity for a hyper-intense, almost violent visual style.

So it makes sense that the director of Blue Velvet and Inland Empire would take the reins for the brand new Nine Inch Nails video “Came Back Haunted.”

Check out the clip below, and be sure to pay attention to the disclaimer, since it’s as rife with flashing lights and whip-pans as suggested:

Between the lighting effects and the blurred intensity, doesn’t the key shot — that spastic single frame on Reznor’s face — recalls the scene in Lost Highway where Bill Pullman’s head suddenly morphs into Balthazar Getty’s head?

This isn’t the first time Lynch and Reznor have teamed up — the two worked together on the aforementioned Lost Highway. (Though Reznor didn’t score that movie, he oversaw and executive produced the soundtrack, which featured Reznor cohorts Marilyn Manson and David Bowie as well as Smashing Pumpkins, Lou Reed, Rammstein, and a smattering of vein-bursting modal jazz care of Twin Peaks music honcho Angelo Badalamenti. )

Lost Highway also contained the Nine Inch Nails song “The Perfect Drug,” which was one of the only new NIN tracks to surface in the desert between The Downward Spiral and The Fragile and was a pretty big deal indeed when it came out; the video also included the debut of Reznor’s ill-advised facial hair.

Anyway, Lost Highway is great. Enjoy Robert Blake’s madness:

“Came Back Haunted” is the first single from Nine Inch Nails’ new album Hesitation Marks, which will be out in September.

What do you think of the video for “Came Back Haunted”? Perhaps Reznor will return the favor and direct a clip for Lynch, whose music output continues to grow? Let us know in the comments.
