Miley Cyrus on her VMA performance: I was trying to make history -- VIDEO

Miley Cyrus: Pop pioneer?

That’s the vibe The Artist Formerly Known as Hannah Montana was going for at last month’s Video Music Awards, according to Miley herself. “Every VMA performance, anyone that performs, that’s what you’re looking for,” Cyrus tells an MTV documentary crew in a newly-released clip, looking much less wild than she did while grinding against Robin Thicke.  (Her tongue is barely even visible!)

“You’re wanting to make history,” the pop tart continued. “Me and Robin the whole time said, ‘You know we’re about to make history right now.’”

And how, exactly, did Cyrus make history? By just being Miley — and by consciously courting controversy, just like her provocative predecessors. “I don’t pay attention to the negative because I’ve seen this play out so many times. How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?” she explained. “Madonna‘s done it. Britney‘s done it.” Sure, they didn’t do it with drugged-out teddy bears and thrusting foam fingers — but you get the general idea.

Then again, Cyrus adds, she didn’t put a ton of forethought into her twerkstravaganza: “We’re three days later and people are still talking about it. They’re over thinking it. You’re thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn’t even think about it ’cause that’s just me.” #YOLO pop just got a new mantra.

Mark your calendars, Mileyniacs (and Parents Television Council members): MTV’s doc about Cyrus will debut this fall. Her untameable new album, Bangerz, drops Oct. 8.
