Last night at Manhattan’s Town Hall, folk music’s greatest and latest joined forces to pay tribute to the music of  Inside Llewyn Davis, the forthcoming Coen Brothers film chronicling the city’s downtown music scene in the ’60s.

It was an evening of “weeping, wailing and sowing and reaping” (as master of ceremonies and Llewyn Davis costar John Goodman put it) featuring an all-star lineup — including Avett Brothers, Marcus Mumford, Patti Smith, Joan Baez, Jack White, Conor Oberst, and the Decemberists’ Colin Meloy — performing music from the soundtrack as well as the classic folk songs from the movie.

Below, some of the highlights of the evening:

+ The Punch Brothers as the house band

The five-man band took on classics like “Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds” and “Rye Whiskey,” and provided the backbone for multiple performers.

+ Justin Timberlake’s “Understudy”: Elvis Costello

Although Davis costar Justin Timberlake was unavailable, he sent his “understudy,” Elvis Costello. The bespectacled rock icon walked into his set with a standing ovation, joining famed producer T Bone Burnett and actor Adam Driver, who backed on vocals for “Please, Mr. Kennedy,” the song performed by Timberlake in the film.

+ Colin Meloy & Joan Baez

Meloy brought out folk music legend  Joan Baez to perform “I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night” alongside Gillian Welch. She went on to be something of the night’s MVP, returning again to join Patti Smith and Marcus Mumford.

+ Patti Smith

Taking on “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You,” a classic folk song once covered by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Smith wowed the audience with her rendition of her own “People Have The Power,” cowritten with her late husband Fred “Sonic” Smith. She was joined by Baez, alongside The Avett Brothers, Lake Street Dive and Dave Rawlings for a moment made in folk heaven. “I’m sure that Fred would be glad to see all these people,” Smith told the audience. “I don’t even know who they are, but I’m glad to see them!”

+ Marcus Mumford’s ‘OMG’ Moment

The Mumford and Sons frontman proved you can never be too cool when you meet your heroes. After performing John Fahey’s “Give Me Cornbread When I’m Hungry” with Baez, he said in awe, “That’s f–ing Joan Baez, man … Everyone’s been too cool to have one of those OMG moments.”  (Later in the night, he also joined the Punch Brothers on a rendition Bob Dylan’s “Farewell” featured on the soundtrack.)

+ Carey Mulligan

Mumford’s wife, actress and Davis costar Carey Mulligan, had her OMG moments too. In addition to joining Costello and The Punch Brothers to sing “500 Miles” by Hedy West, she also partnered up with Gillian Welch and Rhiannon Giddens, the frontwoman for Carolina Chocolate Drops, on an alluring a cappella rendition of “Go To Sleep, Little Baby.”
