Britney Spears gets an unlikely compliment from Method Man on 'The TRL Decade': Watch the EXCLUSIVE clip here!

Between its launch in 1998 and its finale in 2008, MTV’s Total Request Live acted as the center of the television universe for pop music, movie stars, and whatever else fell into teen culture during the turn of the century. Airing every day after school live from MTV’s studio overlooking Times Square, TRL was an institution that not only counted down the most popular music videos of the day but also acted as a clearinghouse for what was cool in an age before social networking.

That note gets hit on a lot in the new documentary The TRL Decade, an hour-long special that premieres this Sunday, January 29 at 9:30 PM on VH1 as part of their RockDocs series. The film traces the origins of the show, which was constructed from the DNA of two other MTV shows (Total Request and MTV Live), and follows it through its huge peak during the pop music boom period that saw acts like the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera rule the radio.

It also highlights a number of huge moments in the show’s history, from wild star visits from Michael Jackson and Tom Cruise to serious business like the Columbine shooting and September 11th. As the show points out, TRL was the place where young people came to see what other teens were talking about, and in the days before Facebook, it was a gateway to both arguments and cultural consensus.

But of course, it was also a place where stars would collide in unpredictable ways. In the exclusive clip below, rapper Method Man tells the tale of the time he and Redman showed up on an episode of TRL that was being guest-hosted by Britney Spears and Sabrina the Teenage Witch star Melissa Joan Hart. According to Meth, they had quite an unusual exchange when they went to pose for a picture. Get the reveal below.

Rihanna crowned best-selling digital artist of all time

How does one sell nearly 50 million downloads in six years? By releasing nearly 50 million singles in six years.

Hyperbole aside, Nielsen Soundscan revealed that Rihanna is now the top-selling digital artist of all time (time here being about as old as the iTunes Store), having moved 47.5 million digital tracks since her 2005 debut.

This gives her a safe lead ahead of runners-up the Black Eyed Peas, who have 42.4 million digital tracks under their Tron belts, and Eminem, who ranks third with 42.29 million.

The Grammy-winning singer’s previous accomplishments include eclipsing Madonna to become the fastest artist to produce 20 Hot 100 top-10 singles, which she pulled off with “We Found Love.”

Of course, one might say RiRi breaks a lot of records largely by making a lot of them. Since 2005, the Barbadian chart beast has released six studio albums and an astonishing 27 singles — more than the BEPs and Eminem combined in the same amount of time.

The full list is below; see if you can count how many of them haven’t collaborated with Rihanna before: READ FULL STORY

Britney Spears engaged

Following up on rampant online buzz, People is reporting that Britney Spears is engaged to Jason Trawick, the agent she’s been officially dating since May of last year.

Spears previously hinted at big news in a tweet: “OMG. Last night Jason surprised me with the one gift I’ve been waiting for. Can’t wait to show you! SO SO SO excited!!!! Xxo”

No word yet on whether or not Trawick’s proposal was anything like the time Brit got the Titanic necklace from that astronaut. (That really happened, right?)

Spears has been married twice before: Once to old friend Jason “I Wasn’t In Seinfeld” Alexander in a blink-of-an-eye Vegas hitching, and once to an underground Brazilian rapper who later starred in Celebrity Fit Club. What was his name again?

Mazel tov, Brit. Here’s hoping you finally found someone who will e-mail your heart on the regular.

Rebecca Black tops '50 Worst Music Videos Ever' -- Who else made the list?

No surprises here: In a list of the “50 Worst Music Videos Ever,” U.K. music mag NME gives Rebecca Black and her viral assault on music otherwise known as “Friday” the dubious top honor.

Though the list had its share of Brit-tastrophes, there is no shortage of American cheese. Some inclusions make absolute sense (Paris Hilton and Steel Panther, anyone?), though other artists who made the cut (Lady Gaga, Britney Spears) might cause more than a few internet mutinies.

Keep reading to see Black’s video and judge for yourself, then see which other guilty-pleasure highlights made the list: READ FULL STORY

Britney Spears and her real-life boyfriend go Bonnie and Clyde in video for new single 'Criminal': Watch here!

It’s crime time for Britney, bitch.

In her new video for “Criminal,” her fourth single from Femme Fatale,  Spears acts out a romantic heist/robbery/forbidden love with real-life love Jason Trawick– complete with multiple naked sex scenes.

The good stuff: Spears looks great — the weave is working for her and the video plotline has a fun story that isn’t just Britney slithering against a wall.

Although it is a Spears video — there’s still a little slithering. Check out the maybe NSFW video below: READ FULL STORY

Lyric Videos: Is this a trend now? Britney Spears' 'Criminal' joins the YouTube fray

Lyric videos: They aren’t just for your kid sister’s Justin Bieber fan clips anymore.

Yesterday, Britney Spears released an official lyric video for “Criminal,” her upcoming fourth single off Femme Fatale.

First of all, awesome: That song has a darker edge than some of her previous work, but still retains her trademark computer-y syrup-y sweet voice, if that’s your thing (and it’s kind of mine).

But it got me wondering: When did lyric videos become an official, publicist-touted release? Spears still plans to be put out a traditional music video—in fact, she’s been making headlines across the pond for her Criminal video shoot. So apparently, this lyric video is just to build buzz and get you talking about the song.

RCA Records retires Jive, J Records, and Arista

Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that RCA Records has folded J Records, Arista Records, and Jive into parent label, RCA. The label issued a statement to EW explaining that the move was “an effort to refresh RCA Records,” and “all label imprints (J Records, Arista Records and Jive) will now be under the the iconic RCA Records label.” Among the artists who will be affected by the change are Jive tentpoles (Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake), singers from Arista (Alicia Keys, Pink, Usher), and J Records acts, including Pitbull.

'Pop Up Video' reboot: Watch them skewer Britney Spears' 'Till the World Ends'

VH1 announced back in May that it was resurrecting its beloved late ’90s/early ’00s series Pop Up Video, which successfully ran on the cable network (and was its highest-rated series for a time) from 1996 through 2002.

Well, that announcement is about to bear fruit: The show — which famously began the trend of playing back music videos and overlaying them with nuggets of behind-the-scenes info and other funny and/or snarky quips — is set to return Oct. 3.

Below you can check out the updated opening graphics, as well as the Pop Up version of Britney Spears’ apocalyptic dance party video for “Till the World Ends,” which will air in the two episodes that debut on premiere night. READ FULL STORY

MTV 2011 VMAs: What you didn't see on TV

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards are in the books, and while the show as a whole felt a little scattered and unfocused, there were indeed some high points. Russell Brand, Tony Bennett, and Bruno Mars gave Amy Winehouse an excellent tribute, Beyoncé capped off a great performance with a nice little revelation about the future of her family, and Adele tore down the house with her stunning, jaw-dropping run through “Someone Like You.”

But there were a handful of amazing moments that happened between MTV’s rapid-fire camera cuts and commercial breaks. Luckily, I was inside the Nokia Theater at L.A. Live and can report the eight greatest things you probably missed during the show. READ FULL STORY

MTV 2011 VMAs: Lady Gaga explains alter ego Jo Calderone as a New Jersey Italian who's 'not a f--ing guido!'

What was the deal with Lady Gaga appearing as her alter ego Joe Calderone at the 2011 VMAs? It’s a little unclear, but one thing is for certain: The pop queen was infinitely dedicated to the act, as became apparent when she appeared in the VMA press room and would only answer questions as Calderone, despite being introduced by handlers as Lady Gaga.

“I don’t understand the question,” Gaga/Calderone said after a journalist asked how one persona inspires or affects the other.

And how did it end up that Joe showed up at the VMAs instead of Gaga? Explained Gaga/Calderone: “She’s just really f—ing pissed at me right now and she said, ‘F— you. If you really love me, you’ll go instead of me, and you’ll get in that spotlight.’ So I did.”

Next question: Who is Joe and how long will he be with us? “I’m going to be here about five more minutes,” Gaga/Calderone said. “And I’m from Jersey. My family is from Palermo, Sicily, and I’m not a singer or a model or an actor or anything.”

Calderone is a guido, someone in the press crowd suggested. “No, I’m not a f—ing guido!” the enraged Gaga/Calderone said. “You don’t like Italians? What the f— is the matter with you? I’m just a guy, and I just wanted to show my girl how much I love her, that’s all.”

And lastly: Any chance that Calderone would get together with Britney, who he had just lavished on stage? “Maybe if she wants to,” Gaga/Calderone said. “She’s f—ing hot. I don’t know. You know, Gaga is my girl, but Britney is f—ing Britney Spears. Didn’t you jerk off to Britney when you were a kid?”
