Gwyneth Paltrow's performance on the CMAs: Country strong?

Gwyneth-Paltrow-CMA-dressImage Credit: Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic.com Who better to fill the final performance spot at the 44th annual CMA Awards than a legend of the industry, a Grand Ole Opry vet, a … super famous actress, Gwyneth Paltrow!

Oh, we kid. This Malibu/Manhattan bird not only turned on her Nashville twang to play the title song from her upcoming Country Strong, she did it with a guitar, and Vince Gill. (The seven other dudes also onstage playing guitar were so sweet to assist, don’t you think?).

Honestly, la Paltrow sounded solid, and more tuneful than some who do it for a living on tonight’s show, and it earned her a standing O, though Blake Shelton’s slow-clap smirk looked a little more “Eh, she did it better in Duets.”

What did you think, viewers? Did she pull off her Bridgestone Arena debut?

Taylor Swift becomes youngest person to win the BMI Country Songwriter of the Year award

taylor-swiftImage Credit: Joseph Anthony BakerIt’s a good time to be Taylor Swift! Not only does the young star have the country’s No. 1 album for the second week in a row, but now she’s the youngest person to ever win BMI’s Country Songwriter of the Year award. At age 20, Swift beat out previous record holders Bill Anderson, who won at 23 in 1960, and Johnny Cash, who won at 24 in 1956. Swift also took home the BMI Award for Country Song of the Year for “You Belong With Me,” which makes her the first songwriter to win that award three times in a row. Watch the video for her award-winning tune below. READ FULL STORY »

Eminem, Lady Antebellum lead American Music Awards nominees

AMA-nomsThe American Music Awards announced their nominees today, and in a rare display of statuette-dispensary restraint, neither of 2010′s Dominant Blondes—Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga—lead the pack.

They are, of course, not entirely forgotten; Swift has a nod for Favorite Female Artist in the Country category, and Gaga two, for Favorite Female Artist in Pop or Rock and overall Artist of the Year.

But this year the AMAs, founded 38 years ago by Dick Clark and defined by a by-and-for-the-people populism (awards are determined by public poll), have directed the spotlight primarily on other acts: Lady Antebellum and Eminem each have five noms, followed by Justin Bieber with four, and Katy Perry, Usher, B.o.B. and Ke$ha with three apiece.

The show is set to air live from L.A. on Sunday, November 21st, and has announced Usher, Pink, and Bon Jovi as preliminary performers. Voting, now in its fourth year as a strictly online enterprise, has already begun; you can participate by clicking here—apparently, a privilege limited only to how many online identities you have (email ID is required to register), and how mobilized your fan club is. In other words: clear your mantle, Biebs.

Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine: An EW Q&a

Florence-and-the-MachineImage Credit: Paul Redmond/WireImage.comSomewhere between Gaga’s meat smock and the endless iterations of Kanye-vs.-Taylor, a different kind of star emerged at last night’s VMAs.

Crimson-haired songstress Florence Welch (who is, essentially, Florence and the Machine) stunned an audience fed on frantic dance moves, endemic lip-synching, and ersatz drama—simply by singing the crap out of a genuinely great song.

EW caught up with the 24-year-old Londoner and 2009 EW Year-End Albums topper late last week, while she was still anticipating last night’s performance, and spoke to her about gearing up for the show, getting to know Lady Gaga, and who she was most likely to fan out on backstage.

EW: Hello! We’re big fans here at EW, so it’s nice to finally speak to you. Are the VMAs a thing you’re familiar with, having grown up in England?

FW: Yeah, they do run them here on MTV, for sure.

EW: So you know the show is famous for crazy incidents—Eminem fighting with the sock puppet, the guy from Rage Against the Machine falling off a statue onstage, Prince in his buttless pants

FW: Oh yes, the buttless pants! The Brits are really my only experience with awards, and the VMAs are such an iconic event. Just yesterday, I was walking around [London's] Soho in a dress that cost me one pound and has a hole in it, and then later I was laying on the living-room floor with my sister and this advert came on for the VMAs, this huge spectacle with explosions and all these massive artists and I was like “Oh my god, I’m doing that? Are you sure?” People in south London laying on their living-room floors aren’t supposed to be the people who do that. It just seems so surreal to me that I was laying there watching an advert for a thing I’m actually scheduled to be performing at.

EW: Are you planning to match that level of spectacle?

FW: I think it’s going to be something quite big, not something we’d be able to do at any other event.

EW: So that means you’ve been learning arial acrobatics, like Pink?

FW: Yes, absolutely. While doing jump rope upside down [laughs].

EW: tell me how this year has been for you, it seems like in America at least, it’s been a pretty slow, steady build… READ FULL STORY »

MTV’s VMA nominations: Five surprise winners and losers

vma-nominationsGetting worked up over this year’s just-announced MTV Video Music Award nominations is kind of like being mad at the WWE for not honoring the traditions of Greco-Roman wrestling; it is what it is, kids. And what it is in 2010 is pretty much The Gaga Sweeps Show.

Meaning, essentially, that just about anyone who is not the thirteen-times-nominated Lady is a tramp. As in hobo. As in sad clown who will be going home with no Moon Men—or at least not great gobby handfuls of them, as Gaga is nearly guaranteed to do. (One possible exception? Eminem. Mr. Mathers snagged eight noms altogether, and will undoubtedly win several; MTV loves a comeback kid).

Even if la Gaga has single-handed saved both the music industry and the production of ash-colored Lady Godiva wigs, it is lovely to see a little attention paid to women who weren’t born Stefani Germanotta—including Florence and the Machine, Nicki Minaj (though for the wrong song), and Janelle Monae. And Dan Black, you kill it with that GarageBand “Umbrella” beat! Twice!

But we digress: Odd and unreflective of other industry awards shows as the VMAs may be, there are still a few shockers in today’s announcement; below, a (very subjective) top five: READ FULL STORY »

Jennifer Lopez splits with her record label

Jennifer Lopez has parted ways with her record label, Sony’s Epic Records, as first reported by Deadline.com’s Nikki Finke (Lopez’s rep confirms the split to EW). The once-hot singer-actress had begun to stage her musical comeback late last year when she released a new single, “Louboutins,” and then fell while singing it at November’s American Music Awards. (See photo at left.) This likely means that Lopez’s seventh studio album, LOVE?, will not hit stores in April as had previously been planned.

Finke cites insiders who said that Lopez’s last two singles (“Louboutins” and “Fresh Out the Oven”) fulfilled the contract she had with Epic, and that LOVE?—said to feature production work from the Neptunes and Darkchild—was never finished. Lopez’s manager Benny Medina told Finke in a statement that “Jennifer had a wonderful relationship with the Sony Music group, and they have shared many successes together, but the time was right to make a change that best serves the direction her career as an actress and recording artist. She is grateful and appreciative to everyone Sony for all that they accomplished together.”

Lopez apparently isn’t walking away from her music career: Her rep tells EW that the singer is currently negotiating with another label.

Lopez is still set to host Saturday Night Live this coming weekend. Although, now it seems she doesn’t even have an album-in-the-works to pimp during the monologue. Should she possibly just pursue a talk-show gig instead? Weigh in below, Music Mixers.
