O-Town releases first single in 10 years, but something's missing -- LISTEN

O-Town, a third-tier boy band from the early aughts, announced they were reuniting earlier this year after a 10-year hiatus. Today, they just dropped their first single, “Skydive.”

The catch for the group, which rose to fame on 2000′s Making the Band? This time around, there’s no Ashley Parker Angel — meaning the five-part guy harmony so crucial to the boy band formula is no more. The remaining foursome include Dan Miller, Erik-Michael Estrada, Jacob Underwood, and Trevor Penick.

I’m gonna quote the band’s own lyrics back to them: I want (you) all, or nothing at all. Without baby-faced Angel, are the band’s one-time fans even interested in the new sound? Perhaps; listen to the smooth harmonies on “Skydive,” and decide if it’ll become part of your summer playlist.

“Skydive” is the first single off Lines & Circles, which will be O-Town’s third full-length album, and their first since 2002′s O2. Listen to the now-four-part O-Town below: READ FULL STORY

One Direction strum up folky heartache on new single 'Story of My Life' -- LISTEN

one-direction-story-of-my-life.jpg

Forget about electric guitars — the lads of One Direction have a new favorite instrument: the kickdrum.

The percussive pounder has made a comeback thanks to Mumford & Sons, and now acts like Gavin Degraw, Lady Antebellum, and, yep, One Direction, are releasing folk-infused singles to radio.

The boy band’s new track “Story of My Life,” which will appear on the upcoming Midnight Memories (their third disc in less than three years), slows things way down from “What Makes You Beautiful” or “Best Song Ever,” though it still proves propulsive. Per usual, the boys take turns singing on the verses, though the chorus seems to feature Harry Styles’ rasp much louder than any of his other bandmates.

Lyrically, the song invites some shades of grey into One Direction’s normally sunny universe as they sing about a torrid romance. “The story of my life: I give her hope,” they wail, but then flip the switch and say, “I spend her love until she’s broke inside.” The writing isn’t all so tight — for instance: “Written on these walls are the colors that I can’t change/Leave my heart open but it stays right here in its cage” — but it’s not unlike Phillip Phillips’ smash “Home” in tone or sentiment.

The die-hard Directioners will eat this up, but casual fans who like their boy bands peppy and poppy (i.e. more “Larger Than Life” than “Shape of My Heart”) may prove tougher to convince. Give the song a listen and weigh in with your thoughts below: READ FULL STORY

How to enrage a One Direction fan in 5 steps

They’re young, they tweet, and man, are they protective of their boys.

One Direction fans are a passionate bunch. So if you happen to find yourself standing in line for One Direction: This Is Us, there are a few things you need to know. Here are five things that will really get the fans fuming:

1. Debate “Larry” vs. “Elounor”
The first thing you need to know about Directioners is that they’re divided into two camps. There are “Larry” shippers, who believe bandmates Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles are in a secret romantic relationship that’s being covered up by their handlers (fans claim that Modest! Management won’t let them be photographed without the rest of the boys anymore), and there are “Elounor” shippers, who trust that Tomlinson’s real-life relationship with University of Manchester student Eleanor Calder, is, in fact, real. Engage either side about the validity of Larry and you’re asking for a heated diatribe—or a series of terrifying “I will cut you” tweets. As you’ll learn, the boys’ love lives are not your business… unless, of course, you’re sure that Louis and Harry are depending on you to expose their secret relationship to the world so they can finally be happy. Lance Bass on rumored NSYNC reunion: 'It's so cute'

Will we be saying “Hi Hi Hi” to an NSYNC reunion at the VMAs this Sunday, as was wildly spread across the internet yesterday?

On his SiriusXM show, “Dirty Pop With Lance Bass,” the man of the hour said this:
“…I have to address the rumors…this morning I woke up to a lot of rumors flying [around] that the ‘NSYNC reunion is happening after eleven years at the VMAs this Sunday. Well, let me tell you how this all came about. Justin Timberlake is getting the Michael Jackson [Video] Vanguard Award this Sunday at the awards, so of course people are automatically going to think we’re going to be there performing, but this is exactly how it happened and I knew these rumors were going to fly.  We all came down here [to Miami] except for J.C. [Chasez]—J.C. stayed in California, he had to work…Joey [Fatone], Chris [Kirkpatrick] and myself went to go see Justin’s last show with Jay Z at the [Sun Life] Stadium last Friday, and I even took a picture of it, it’s on my Instagram (http://instagram.com/p/dIj1QARsUA/)…%5Bit was] really fun and…I think that’s what started the rumor that there’s going to be this big reunion with ‘NSYNC…it’s amazing to see the reaction out there on Twitter and social media…[and] how many people are supporting ‘NSYNC. It’s so nice to see because when we ended things [over] ten years ago, there was no social media, there was no Twitter [fan base], but it’s so cute to see how many people are supporting [us] and ‘NSYNC was even trending…”

Oh, Lance! So coy. You can also listen to the audio here for secret hints and/or truth-telling vocal inflections: READ FULL STORY

One Direction's 'Best Song Ever' breaks Miley's most-viewed record

One-Direction.jpg

What a shocker: Directioners really do think 1D’s latest is the “Best Song Ever”!

Yesterday, the British group’s rabid fans banded together to propel Harry, Niall, Zayn, Liam and Louis’s new single to the top of the digital charts. All in all, they viewed it an astonishing 10.9 million times — making it the most-watched video in a 24-hour period in Vevo history. The record was previously set by Miley Cyrus earlier this summer; her surreal “We Can’t Stop” video racked up 10.7 million views in the day after its release.

Why did this clip get so much attention? Simple: At 6 minutes and 13 seconds, it’s a veritable mini-movie that doubles as a preview for One Direction’s actual movie, which will be released in 3-D Aug. 30. The video also features Zayn in drag, Liam in a bleached-blond wig, Harry in geek-chic glasses, and Niall and Louis in fake facial hair, fat suits, and exaggerated American accents. Oh, and then there’s the song itself — which may not really be the “best ever,” but is pretty catchy all the same.

Watch the quintet’s shenanigans below — and just try not to be charmed.

Yesterday may have been Father’s Day, but EW’s social media all-star Nika Vagner and I were the ones who received the greatest gift of all — a triple bill of boy-band hotness, courtesy of New Kids on the Block’s cheekily named The Package Tour, featuring 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men.

We posted to EW’s Instagram and Vine accounts last night from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. Now I’m here to deliver the in-depth report: READ FULL STORY

New Kids on the Block, 98 Degrees, and Boyz II Men touring together this summer: 'Ladies, we're coming for you'

The-Package-Tour.jpg

NKOTBSB was only the beginning.

New Men Kids on the Block Jordan, Jonathan, Joey, Donnie, and Danny revealed on The View today that they’ll release a new album, 10, this April. The boys also announced that they’re planning a national tour this summer with a few very special guests — newly reunited boy band 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men, the R&B group single-handedly responsible for 87 percent of babies born in 1995. They’re calling the event “The Package Tour,” because “NKOTB98DB2M” would look weird on a t-shirt. Here’s an actual quote from the press release:

“Ladies, we’re coming for you,” said NKOTB member Donnie Wahlberg. “This is going to be the craziest year yet — the single, the album, the tour with 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men … We can’t wait to give fans ‘The Package!’”

The British group hit up Today this morning, an event that attracted a record-breaking 15,000 shrieking fans to Rockefeller Plaza (and made Music Mix late to work). The boys also had a special announcement for Today hosts Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie: they’re having a baby movie!

“We are going to do our first-ever movie, and it’s going to be in 3-D,” Niall announced.

The Wanted are sort of sorry about Christina Aguilera, now talking about Britney Spears

Sorry, but: Oops, they did it again!

(Again, so sorry.) After calling Voice popster Christina Aguilera “a total bitch” in a radio interview last week and semi-apologizing for it, the British boy band the Wanted are now gossiping about Britney Spears behind her back — literally.

The group showed up on New York’s Fresh 102.7 this morning to talk about their experiences with Spears, whom they opened for in Manchester last fall.

“We signed a confidentiality thing that we should never say anything about what happened, but let’s tell it anyway,” said the Wanted’s Tom Parker, the same dude who lobbed the B word at Xtina. READ FULL STORY

Big Time Rush's 'Elevate' music video: Watch a 60-second sneak peek here! -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Big-Time-Rush

Nickelodeon boy band Big Time Rush’s latest music video — for “Elevate,” the title song from their latest album — will premiere on the cable network this Saturday at 9 p.m. during the airing of Big Time Special, a one-hour glimpse at the boys lives while touring. But you don’t have to wait until then to get a glimpse of the video: EW has an exclusive 60-second sneak peek at it today.

Fittingly, since it debuts during a tour special, the “Elevate” video is tour-based and incorporates performances, as well as fan footage, from while the four guys — Kendall Schmidt, 21; Logan Henderson, 22; James Maslow, 21; and Carlos Pena, 22 — were on the road. “We can’t wait for our fans to watch music video for ‘Elevate’ because it’s a collaboration between our fans and us!” Henderson tells EW. “When our fans tune into the music special they may catch a glimpse of themselves from one of our shows from the Better With U tour. “

Adds Schmidt: “There’s nothing more exciting to me then seeing all of our fans in this video — every show is so exciting — and I’m glad we can share a little piece with anyone who hasn’t seen BTR live yet!”

Enjoy the sneak peek of Big Time Rush’s “Elevate” here:
