Britney Spears working on her next album -- new details

Just before the new year, Britney Spears confirmed in a Twitter Q&A that she was indeed “working hard” on her next album, and that she was “collaborating with some new inspiring producers.”

Which is intriguing! But who are these producers providing Britney with inspiration? Details are still scant, and Spears’ rep says that the album’s still in its early planning stages. But the rep did drop a few details, telling us that Britney “hasn’t worked with Elijah Blake,” despite the rumors. That bit of buzz began when Blake, a writer who sometimes goes by Sean Fenton and has worked with the likes of Usher and Rihanna, said in an interview that he was working with Britney on her new album. We’ve reached out to him for a comment but have yet to hear back.

But the rep did drop some names of people who are working on the album with Britney — like the recently inescapable Hit-Boy, the aptly named producer behind Kanye West and Jay-Z’s “N—-s in Paris,” A$AP Rocky’s “Goldie,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Backseat Freestyle,” and other major 2012 jams.

Of course, there’ll be seasoned Spears vets helping out too. Will.i.am., for instance, will be pitching in again.

Watch Will.i.am and Britney Spears' collaboration 'Scream & Shout' -- VIDEO

It’s Britney, b****.

Don’t blame me for the very 2007 intro. Britney herself once again gives us her “Gimme More” greeting identifier/ declaration in the video for “Scream & Shout,” a new will.i.am song featuring Ms. Spears.

Britney is rocking some very “Stronger”-esque outfits (and hair!) in the vid for this club thumper, but alas, Spears’ dancing is subbed out for some angry stomping.

Will.i.am, for his part, does his best to get it started with a KING crown and plenty of technological devises, before performing some futuristic slow-mo running and watching approvingly as the back-up dancers party on.

Britney Spears' former manager claims singer used drugs

Britney Spears’ career is full of highs and lows, and yesterday, some of her lowest moments were on display in a Los Angeles courtroom. Spears’ former manager, Sam Lutfi, is suing various members of Britney’s family, and claims Spears did drugs during her troubled times, People reports.

In opening statements, Lutfi’s attorney talks about the singer’s drug use during 2007 — the time when Lutfi was serving as her manager — saying, “Most of the things that went wrong related to that habit [of amphetamine use]… My client sometimes spent 24 hours a day to prevent Britney from using drugs.” He tried to portray Lutfi as a calming force during her troubled times. The Spears family disagrees: In 2009, a judge gave them a three-year restraining order against Lutfi.

In addition to seeking the 15% of Spears’ earning during the eight months he was her manager, Lutfi is also suing Spears’ parents for defamation and alleges Spears’ father, Jamie, punched him in the chest. He claims that accusations Britney’s mom wrote in her 2008 book, Through the Storm, — including that Lutfi “cut the phone lines in Britney’s home, disabled her cars and ground up medication and put it in her food in an attempt to cause a ‘sleep-induced coma’ at the urging of her doctors,” per People — aren’t true.

Britney herself is not expected to appear in court. An email to her rep was unreturned.

Taylor Swift in tears, Axl gone AWOL, Britney breaking out in a rash: MTV's top exec tells EW the stories behind the wildest moments in VMA history

Last week’s MTV Video Music Awards may have suffered from disappointing ratings (this year’s viewership was only half of last year’s all-time high 12.45 million) and a dearth of big wow moments, but there’s no shortage of bonkers events to look back on in the show’s past.

In fact, we recently caught up with MTV Music Group President Van Toffler to discuss some of the wildest, wooliest, and most unforgettable water-cooler moments from the VMAs’ nearly three-decade run — and got some previously unpublished revelations on everyone from Britney Spears (did you know that she wasn’t actually Madonna’s first-kiss choice back in 2003? Or that her 2001 snake-charming had a seriously unfortunate side effect?) to Kanye’s infamous speechus interruptus. Read on (with video links in the headers, when available).

Kanye Storms the Stage and Interrupts Taylor Swift (2009)
Toffler: “There’s no way any of us could have predicted that — we didn’t orchestrate it. He came with a bottle of alcohol, so he was in a festive mood to begin with. But we all were in shock in the [production] truck when he walked up on stage and took the mic from Taylor. I remember turning to one of the producers and going, ‘Do we not have security?’ [But] we don’t put those big bulky guys on camera in front of the talent. Maybe this guy thought Kanye belonged on the stage.

I said to our line producer, ‘You need to go talk to Kanye and probably have him exit the building, and I will go deal with Taylor.’ And she was about to perform right after that break! She was a champ. I would be lying if I said she and her mom weren’t crying when I saw them, but she pulled it together. This was one of the most absurd VMA moments for me, having to talk to her and her mom, and they’re crying and upset, and this was her first time on the VMAs, and she had been used to working on country shows with polite artists. This was a little bit more chaotic than she was used to. And then I walked back behind the stage to find Beyoncé crying about the incident. Ultimately I talked to her and her dad and then went back to Taylor after her performance, and an hour later Beyoncé brought Taylor back out so she could have her moment.

It all played out okay in the end, but there was a lot of drama in between. Beyoncé had the wisdom to bring Taylor out on stage, and Taylor stayed to have her moment instead of leaving.”

Jamie Lynn Spears performs song about Britney -- VIDEO

Is this a recently unearthed Britney-Spears-circa-2002 video?

Surprise! It’s not — it’s actually little sis Jamie Lynn, now 21, who bears a double-take-worthy resemblance to her famous older sister. And Britney was certainly on the younger Spears’ mind last night, when Jamie Lynn performed an original track, “I Look Up to You,” at a club in Nashville.

With lyrics such as “They took away your innocence/We forgot our strong defense,” the song can easily be read to be about everyone’s favorite not-that-innocent pop star.

The Wanted are sort of sorry about Christina Aguilera, now talking about Britney Spears

Sorry, but: Oops, they did it again!

(Again, so sorry.) After calling Voice popster Christina Aguilera “a total bitch” in a radio interview last week and semi-apologizing for it, the British boy band the Wanted are now gossiping about Britney Spears behind her back — literally.

The group showed up on New York’s Fresh 102.7 this morning to talk about their experiences with Spears, whom they opened for in Manchester last fall.

“We signed a confidentiality thing that we should never say anything about what happened, but let’s tell it anyway,” said the Wanted’s Tom Parker, the same dude who lobbed the B word at Xtina. READ FULL STORY

Madonna and Britney flirt on Twitter: 'Come on stage and kiss me again'

Here’s something that’ll make you feel ancient: It’s been nearly nine years since Madonna kissed Britney Spears at the VMAs. Nine years! If it were a person, that kiss would be in third grade. It’s older than YouTube and Facebook and Suri Cruise!

But I digress. Apparently, Madge and Brit-Brit both have fond memories of the Smooch Heard ‘Round the World. The two pop icons engaged in some harmless flirting on Twitter yesterday after Britney congratulated Madonna on her new album, saying, “every single song is incredible.” (EW’s Melissa Maerz doesn’t totally agree.)

Madonna’s first @-reply was swift and cheeky. “please come on stage and kiss me again,” she wrote. “I miss you!!” READ FULL STORY

Britney Spears gets an unlikely compliment from Method Man on 'The TRL Decade': Watch the EXCLUSIVE clip here!

Between its launch in 1998 and its finale in 2008, MTV’s Total Request Live acted as the center of the television universe for pop music, movie stars, and whatever else fell into teen culture during the turn of the century. Airing every day after school live from MTV’s studio overlooking Times Square, TRL was an institution that not only counted down the most popular music videos of the day but also acted as a clearinghouse for what was cool in an age before social networking.

That note gets hit on a lot in the new documentary The TRL Decade, an hour-long special that premieres this Sunday, January 29 at 9:30 PM on VH1 as part of their RockDocs series. The film traces the origins of the show, which was constructed from the DNA of two other MTV shows (Total Request and MTV Live), and follows it through its huge peak during the pop music boom period that saw acts like the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera rule the radio.

It also highlights a number of huge moments in the show’s history, from wild star visits from Michael Jackson and Tom Cruise to serious business like the Columbine shooting and September 11th. As the show points out, TRL was the place where young people came to see what other teens were talking about, and in the days before Facebook, it was a gateway to both arguments and cultural consensus.

But of course, it was also a place where stars would collide in unpredictable ways. In the exclusive clip below, rapper Method Man tells the tale of the time he and Redman showed up on an episode of TRL that was being guest-hosted by Britney Spears and Sabrina the Teenage Witch star Melissa Joan Hart. According to Meth, they had quite an unusual exchange when they went to pose for a picture. Get the reveal below.

Rihanna crowned best-selling digital artist of all time

How does one sell nearly 50 million downloads in six years? By releasing nearly 50 million singles in six years.

Hyperbole aside, Nielsen Soundscan revealed that Rihanna is now the top-selling digital artist of all time (time here being about as old as the iTunes Store), having moved 47.5 million digital tracks since her 2005 debut.

This gives her a safe lead ahead of runners-up the Black Eyed Peas, who have 42.4 million digital tracks under their Tron belts, and Eminem, who ranks third with 42.29 million.

The Grammy-winning singer’s previous accomplishments include eclipsing Madonna to become the fastest artist to produce 20 Hot 100 top-10 singles, which she pulled off with “We Found Love.”

Of course, one might say RiRi breaks a lot of records largely by making a lot of them. Since 2005, the Barbadian chart beast has released six studio albums and an astonishing 27 singles — more than the BEPs and Eminem combined in the same amount of time.

The full list is below; see if you can count how many of them haven’t collaborated with Rihanna before: READ FULL STORY

Britney Spears engaged

Following up on rampant online buzz, People is reporting that Britney Spears is engaged to Jason Trawick, the agent she’s been officially dating since May of last year.

Spears previously hinted at big news in a tweet: “OMG. Last night Jason surprised me with the one gift I’ve been waiting for. Can’t wait to show you! SO SO SO excited!!!! Xxo”

No word yet on whether or not Trawick’s proposal was anything like the time Brit got the Titanic necklace from that astronaut. (That really happened, right?)

Spears has been married twice before: Once to old friend Jason “I Wasn’t In Seinfeld” Alexander in a blink-of-an-eye Vegas hitching, and once to an underground Brazilian rapper who later starred in Celebrity Fit Club. What was his name again?

Mazel tov, Brit. Here’s hoping you finally found someone who will e-mail your heart on the regular.
