Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst files libel suit over rape claim

Musician Conor Oberst filed a $1 million libel lawsuit yesterday against a woman who accused him of raping her in the comments section of a blog, the AP reports.

The suit, filed in Manhattan, stems from an XOJane story in December called It Happened to Me: I Dated a Famous Rock Star & All I Got Was Punched in the Face; the woman Oberst is suing posted an anonymous comment on the story claiming that she had been raped by a musician ten years prior in North Carolina, when she was 16. She later claimed that it was Oberst, best known for his work as Bright Eyes, as well as Desaparecidos and the indie supergroup Monsters of Folk.

Oberst is reportedly seeking $1 million in damages over the accusation, which his publicist said was “absolutely, unequivocally false” in a statement. (Oberst says he intends to give the money to charity.) Read the full statement below:

Guess who auditioned for 'Inside Llewyn Davis'? Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst

And it wasn’t for the role of the cat.

In a new Interview Magazine Q&A, Conor Oberst and Oscar Isaac hop on the phone to discuss various facets of the well-received Coen brothers movie Inside Llewyn Davis — including the fact that Oberst himself auditioned to be the star.

“I know I told you this when we met, but I tried out for your role in Inside Llewyn Davis,” Oberst says to Isaac. “And thank God for everyone that I didn’t get it. But they auditioned a lot of musicians and actors for this part, to the point where I heard the Coen brothers and T Bone Burnett say that they had more or less given up on the idea of finding someone. And then you appeared.”

Interesting! How different would the movie have been if the onetime king of the “Emoha” scene had the title role? And would he have “Roar”ed for Jimmy Fallon?

My Morning Jacket's Jim James to release solo album in 2013

Jim James, the frontman of the folk-rock group My Morning Jacket, has announced his first full-length solo album, Regions of Light and Sound of God. The record will be released on Feb. 5, 2013, by ATO Records.

“I wanted the album to sound like it came from a different place in time. Perhaps sounding as if it were the past of the future, if that makes any sense—like a hazy dream that a fully-realized android or humanoid capable of thought might have when it reminisces about the good old days of just being a simple robot,” James said in a press release. The record was inspired by Lynd Ward’s 1929 wood-engraving graphic novel God’s Man, which “chronicles an artist’s struggles with temptation and corruption, along with finding true love.” James adds: “Some of the things happening in the book were happening to me in real life, in a very strange and painful, then a very beautiful way.”
