Unsung heroes: Nominate your favorite backup singers and musicians!

Duran Duran hit Madison Square Garden last week, and though they had special guests Mark Ronson and Scissor Sisters’ Ana Matronic join them onstage for “Girl Panic!” and “Safe (In the Heat of the Moment)”, respectively, I realized the person I was most excited to see outside the band was longtime backup singer Anna Ross (pictured, with Simon Le Bon).

I got oddly excited each time I caught her and I doing the same dance move at the same time. And dancing at a Duran Duran show is something you can count on — as sure as the audience chanting “Play the f—ing bass, John,” Nick Rhodes trying not to crack a smile, and my friend Sheila leaning over to tell me Simon’s choreography seconds before he does it (finger-licking during “Come Undone,” a spin during “The Reflex,” and jumps off a platform during “Hungry Like the Wolf” and “Rio”).

Who are the backup singers and musicians you look forward to spying onstage when you go to see your favorite artists? Go!

Duran Duran postpones tour

Duran Duran postponed its plans for a summer tour because lead singer Simon Le Bon hasn’t recovered from voice problems. The 52-year old Le Bon told the Associated Press he was struggling with high notes after damaging his vocal chords. “I am doing everything I can to work through this and get back on track as soon as possible,” Le Bon said.

The band was scheduled to begin their tour July 14 in Dublin.

“You’re going to Duran Duran?” my esteemed music critic friend said, appalled and yet also thrilled for the opportunity to mock me. “What are you hoping to hear? ‘The Reflex’? ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’?”

Um … well, actually … yes. And I wouldn’t mind “Planet Earth,” “Rio” and “New Moon on Monday” either. So there. READ FULL STORY

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Who would you nominate for induction this year?

KISS-Rush-The-SmithsImage Credit: Everett Collection; Fin Costello/Redferns/Getty Images; Pete Cronin/Redferns/Getty ImagesYes, it’s that time of year again. On September 28, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will announce the list of nominations for 2011 induction, and countless arguments will erupt over who got nominated and didn’t deserve it, who didn’t get nominated and did deserve it, and what this whole thang we call “rock and roll” means anyway.

But why wait until then? Who do you think should be nominated (remembering that an act must have released its first single or album at least 25 years ago)? The list of eligible acts is a long one and includes T.Rex, Bon Jovi, The Smiths, Rush, Joan Jett, Ice-T, Duran Duran, Beastie Boys, Peter Tosh, Alice Cooper, and last year’s unsuccessful nominees KISS, Donna Summer, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Personally, if I had any say in the matter, I’d nominate cult British folkies Fairport Convention. But, hey, maybe that’s one of the reasons I don’t have a say in the matter.

What about you?
