If you’re going to throw a party in Nashville — especially one where little gold statuettes will be handed out — you kind of have to invite Taylor Swift. So it’s only right that this year’s CMT Music Awards get that formality out of the way.

The first batch of performers have been announced for this year’s show, which takes place on Wednesday, June 5, at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. In addition to Swift, the stage will belong to Pistol Annies (whose excellent new album Annie Up is out now), Luke Bryan, Hunter Hayes, and Little Big Town, with more to come. READ FULL STORY »

ACM Awards 2013: Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan's best jokes

Blake and Luke are no Brad and Carrie, but both country stars were happily game to roast each other during the ACM Awards opening tonight. While their cheesy delivery could use some work (Luke Bryan, not wanting to appear too rude, kept laughing hard and patting Blake Shelton’s back after each barb, which made much of the already too obvious humor seem even lamer), the guys did manage a few chuckle worthy lines. Plus, their camaraderie at the end of the show after Bryan nabbed the Entertainer of the Year trophy was genuinely charming.

Here are some of their best quips:

Blake: “How about a shout out to the Sherwin Williams company for spray-painting Luke’s jeans on for him tonight? You know what a Motel 6 and Luke’s jeans have in common? There’s no ballroom.” READ FULL STORY »

Luke Bryan talks new 'Spring Break' album (and what should be on your playlist)

Luke-Bryan.jpg

For the last four years, country music’s best butt shaker Luke Bryan — who’ll cohost next month’s ACM Awards with Blake Shelton where his four nominations include Entertainer, Male Vocalist, and Album of the Year — has released a Spring Break EP and played free shows in Panama City, Fla. (his own favorite Spring Break spot in college).

Today, in advance of next week’s parties in Panama City and Orange Beach, Ala., he drops a full-length album, Spring Break… Here to Party, gathering the best of those previous releases (like the self-explanatory “Suntan City” and “Take My Drunk Ass Home”) with two new songs for 2013 — the party-starting “Just a Sip” and the more somber “Buzzkill” (watch that video below). He stood still long enough to take a few of our questions.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: CMT recently aired a special on your Spring Break phenomenon. I assume that moment when you threw a beer to a bikini-clad girl standing high above the crowd, roughly 50 feet away, and she caught it and chugged it is the one you’re always trying to top?
LUKE BRYAN: Yeah, I think in the history of it all, it’s probably the best moment ever. Maybe ever performing for me. The overall energy of these Spring Break shows is electric. Any time you get a bunch of guys and girls in bathing suits and bikinis, there’s no tellin’ what can happen at any moment. READ FULL STORY »

Luke Bryan didn’t want the American Country Awards to end.

He cleaned up during the fan-voted show, earning nine awards, including artist and album of the year. His smash hit “I Don’t Want This Night To End” was named single and music video of the year.

Miranda Lambert took home the second most guitar trophies with three. Jason Aldean was named touring artist of the year. Carrie Underwood won female artist of the year, and a tearful Lauren Alaina won new artist of the year.

Bryan, Aldean, Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum and Trace Adkins with Lynyrd Skynrd were among the high-energy performances.

The third annual ACAs were held at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas Monday night.

American Music Awards: See the winners list here!

America proved its Bieber Fever was strong: The teen singer dominated the American Music Awards on Sunday night.

Bieber’s wins included the show’s top award, artist of the year. The singer’s mom joined him onstage as he collected the top award. He looked to his mom: “I wanted to thank you for always believing in me.”

He said it’s “hard growing up with everyone watching me” and asked that people continue to believe in him.

The 18-year-old also won favorite pop/rock album for Believe, and male artist.

He performed two songs at the award show, one stripped and another upbeat with Nicki Minaj. As Bieber won his second award, he was kissed on the neck by Jenny McCarthy, who presented the award.

Here is a full list of the winners:  READ FULL STORY »

CMA Awards: Best and worst of the broadcast

Willie-Nelson-CMA.jpg

The real winners were announced last night at the 46th Annual Country Music Association Awards. But here are a few more honors from the telecast you should feel free to weigh in on:

Best Hosts: There really aren’t enough superlatives to describe the effervescent duo of Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood — they’re simply the best. If you were to look through the last five years of Oscar/Grammy/Tony/Emmy telecasts, you’d be hard pressed to find one joke that could compete with Paisleywood’s opening monologue. Their goofy (and increasingly saucy) hosting style always brings the laughs, and they keep the show moving briskly. On top of that, they both performed their own singles, delivered heartfelt tributes to Andy Griffith and Connie Smith, and demonstrated impressive “Gangnam Style” technique. Do better than that, Seth MacFarlane.

Best performance: I’m a sucker for the CMA Awards’ tribute performances (I still get a little teary thinking about last year’s Glen Campbell effort), and this year’s Willie Nelson-centered medley was no exception. Charles Kelly and Hillary Scott (of Lady Antebellum) sounded terrific on “Always on My Mind,” as did Blake Shelton and Keith Urban on “Whiskey River” and Faith Hill and Tim McGraw on “Good Hearted Woman.” The whole thing felt so warm that when Nelson himself took the stage and sang ”The life I love is making music with my friends,” (from “On the Road Again”), you really believed it was happening in that moment. Who should win at the CMA Awards? -- POLLS

Tonight is country music’s biggest night. The 46th annual Country Music Association Awards will air at 8:00 p.m. on ABC, and it’s already shaping up to be a great show.

Why? Well, because the CMA Awards are always a great show. In an overcrowded field of country awards (ACAs, I still haven’t warmed up to you), the CMA Awards remain the most prestigious — and most entertaining — of the bunch.

Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, who have become quite the formidable comic duo, are returning for a fifth year as hosts (check out their interview about the show here), and performances from stars like Kelly Clarkson and The Band Perry, both of whom will perform new singles, as well as Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean will keep the night rocking.

But at the center of the awards are still, believe it or not, the actual awards! We’ve already given you our thoughts on all the nominations (as well as all the snubs and surprises), but now let’s handicap who might win in the major categories. READ FULL STORY »

How Mumford & Sons and Taylor Swift are causing a seismic shift in the music industry

The biggest debut of 2012 doesn’t belong to a glossy pop act like One Direction or Justin Bieber.

Sure, those boys have hordes of teenage girls ready to download their music at the drop of a tweet, but they’ve got nothing on the scruffy gents of Mumford & Sons, whose new disc, Babel sold 600,000 copies in its first seven days. (The next-best opening? Bieber’s Believe, with 374,000 in week 1.)

Babel‘s success (it has now led the chart for three weeks and sold 865,000 copies total) is indicative of a larger shift within the music industry. As pop music morphs into a glow-stick dance party, country acts have adopted the traditional pop sound. That leaves Mumford and the burgeoning Americana and folk genres (think acoustic guitars, banjos, and innumerable fitted tweed vests) to fill the country void. Did you get all that? Allow us to break it down. READ FULL STORY »
