Michelle Shocked apologizes: 'I do not believe that God hates homosexuals'

Last weekend, Michelle Shocked burst back into the public consciousness with a hideous anti-gay rant during a concert in San Francisco. “When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization, and Jesus will come back,” she reportedly told the crowd. “You can go on Twitter and say, ‘Michelle Shocked says God hates f—s.'”

Most of her upcoming tour dates were canceled in the wake of the controversy. Wednesday, Shocked (born Karen Johnston) issued a statement that rolled back (or at least clarified) her statements from the weekend. “I do not, nor have I ever, said or believed that God hates homosexuals (or anyone else),” Shocked wrote. “When I said “Twitter that Michelle Shocked says ‘God hates f—–s,’ I was predicting the absurd way my description of, my apology for, the intolerant would no doubt be misinterpreted.”

Most of Michelle Shocked's tour canceled following anti-gay remarks

Michelle Shocked is starting to see the fallout from her anti-gay tirade at her recent concert in San Francisco.

In addition to clubs canceling their Michelle Shocked bookings, Colorado’s Telluride Bluegrass Festival has also pulled the plug on her scheduled June 23 appearance. READ FULL STORY

Alt-folk singer Michelle Shocked has come a long way since her days as a ’90s college radio staple and Lilith Fair regular; the now born-again Christian took many by surprise on Sunday when she launched into an anti-gay hate rant at a concert — and in San Francisco, of all places.

It all went down at Yoshi’s, a venue that SFist says had been touting Shocked as “the most sophisticated hillbilly you ever met.” (Shocked’s Facebook page, meanwhile, describes her as “your average anarchist skateboard punk rock born again Christian.”)

But none of that prepared the crowd for her comments on stage, which effectively cleared out the venue once offended concertgoers realized what was going on. Details of her speech’s contents are still unclear — at first, many apparently thought it was a joke until it became obvious Shocked was being sincere — but many took to Twitter to live tweet the hateful portions of her performance.

Among the tweets from the scene: READ FULL STORY
