Mikky Ekko debuts acoustic ballad 'Time'

Mikky Ekko is best known for his duet with Rihanna on 2013’s “Stay,” but he’s going solo for his latest song, “Time.”

“Time” is the title track off Ekko’s upcoming album, his first full-length record since getting into the music business more than five years ago. The song is an acoustic ballad full of music swells and emotional lyrics—not quite as upbeat as “Smile” (if you can call “Smile” upbeat), but enjoyable nonetheless. READ FULL STORY

Mikky Ekko, who you may know as Rihanna’s co-star in her mega-hit “Stay,” will release his debut album later this fall (side note/friendly PSA: it’s almost fall). The first single, “Smile” debuted earlier this month and bodes well for the upcoming collection: powerful vocals, delicate finishes, catchy, anthemic choruses.

The Louisiana native, who currently lives in Nashville, has been gaining major momentum, spending last summer touring with Jessie Ware, opening for Justin Timberlake in London in October and is currently working on highly-anticipated projects with artists like Zedd, Gwen Stefani, and Rihanna.

EW reached out to Ekko, asking him to put together a playlist for an occasion of his choosing. What did we get? “10 Tracks to Vibe Out Your Tuesday Night Pizza Party.” Fun, specific, and nuanced (in nature as well as naming), complete with commentary on each selection.

Hear Mikky Ekko's original version of Rihanna's 'Stay' -- EXCLUSIVE

There’s no denying that “Stay” is a powerful song. The Grammys agree, Patti Smith agrees, and when Rihanna heard songwriter Mikky Ekko’s original, she did too — and now you can hear the version that first caught RiRi’s attention exclusively here.

Ekko, who provides guest vocals on the final cut that we’ve all come to know, wrote the ballad with Justin Parker back in 2012, though it wasn’t easy, initially; “I struggled so much with that song,” he has said. “It came from a really vulnerable place for me and I don’t like writing that kind of stuff.”

That struggle, of course, led to the song that became one of the biggest hits from Rihanna’s Unapologetic, and earned the singer some of the biggest accolades of her career, including a spot in EW’s own year-end 10 best singles list.

Take a listen to the original Ekko version below:

Rihanna sulks in a bathtub in 'Stay' video: Watch it here

After performing the song with Mikky Ekko at Sunday’s Grammys, Rihanna is ready to give “Stay” a music video. Wearing nothing more than some jewelry and a frown, a visibly upset RiRi spends the entirety of the clip sitting in the bathtub naked. She looks cold, sad, lonely. At one point towards the end the song, at the line  “I want you to stay,” she sheds a tear.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
