In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, I ruminate over the anniversary of the death of one of the last great rock stars with a simple question: Had he not died in April 1994, what might Kurt Cobain’s music have sounded like now?
In order to find some possible answers, I talked to Cobain’s friends and collaborators about his potential musical directions; the master playlist craftspeople at Beats Audio took those cues and built a batch of songs that help extrapolate what Cobain might have sounded like had he lived.
“Cobain always seemed like an old soul and I agree that he would have continued to explore more acoustic music, as opposed to electric,” says Beats’ Scott Plagenhoef. “He wrote personal lyrics but they were opaque and non-linear and he never wrote narratives. There is also a temptation to assume major creative forces like Cobain would remain progressive into their older age but the fact of the matter is that was never a quality that he displayed even during his lifetime. There is no indication he would have embraced electronic music, for example.”
The playlist includes a handful of tracks that seem like inevitable Cobain compositions (Elliott Smith’s “Waltz No. 2 (XO),” Wilco’s “How To Fight Loneliness,” The White Stripes’ “We’re Going To Be Friends”), as well as some reasonable stretches (EMA’s “California,” Cat Power’s “He War,” Lambchop’s “My Face Your Ass”). A few weeks ago, a dude named Frederick Scott tickled Nine Inch Nails fans with “This Is A Trent Reznor Song,” a loving tribute to the NIN frontman’s songwriting and performance tics. It was awesome, and one of the better musical parodies on the entirety of the Internet.
Now comes the next stage: Scott’s video for “This Is A Trent Reznor Song,” which borrows elements from the clips for Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer” and “The Hand That Feeds.” Once again Scott nails it, with the same kind of video effects from “The Hand That Feeds” and the commitment to spooky photography and weird lighting from the classic “Closer.”
It’s a little more outwardly funny than the song itself—the reaction shot Scott gives to the bottle of milk is particularly fantastic—but it still retains the same kind of reverence for Reznor’s work as the track.

In the clip for the song, which comes from her just-released self-titled album, Shakira is dressed as a ballerina bride at a lovely-looking country wedding. But before she walks down the aisle, she gets cold feet, and the only cure for cold feet is to light yourself on fire.
With her veil torched, she splits the rest of her time in a cartoon-pretty field (perhaps a vineyard?) and dressing in black so she can do back bends in a tower, all the while inviting us to observe when “the stars make love to the universe.”
It’s twice as nutty as that sounds, so you should probably just set aside four minutes for crazy and watch it below:
Though I had dipped in and out of MTV throughout the late ’80s and early ’90s, tuning in for the manic kitsch of Remote Control, the clever smarm of The Half-Hour Comedy Hour, and the occasional Skid Row video, I didn’t really go all in on the network—and thus music videos—until 1994. I had become deeply invested in the narrative running through the third season of The Real World, which was the great San Francisco-based slobberknocker between Pedro and Puck. That show became the only thing people talked about during middle school study halls, so I immersed myself in one of the earliest revolutionary reality shows, and often stuck around for the videos.
I have vivid memories of sitting in the dark in my living room after my parents had gone to bed, watching clip after clip on the network (this was still the era when a Saturday night meant several consecutive hours of music videos shown under various umbrellas). A handful of those videos from that year stuck with me, simply because they were in such heavy rotation: Nirvana’s Unplugged performance of “All Apologies,” Smashing Pumpkins’ sci-fi clip for “Rocket,” Soudgarden’s terrifying “Black Hole Sun,” and the Beastie Boys’ kinetic ’70s cop show homage “Sabotage.” (There was also the always-playing clip for Janet Jackson’s “Any Time, Any Place,” which I found boring at the time but now I find cripplingly sexy.)

It’s not uncommon for artists to get a little personal while on stage. Whether it’s John Mayer apologizing to his fans for something he said, Miley Cyrus breaking down in the middle of singing “Wrecking Ball,” or Beyonce announcing her pregnancy, singers can start to feel pretty comfortable in front of that microphone. And the latest star to blur that line between personal and professional is none other than Robin Thicke.
After Thicke and Paula Patton announced that they were separating, Thicke went back on tour. There, he revealed that he’s not exactly ready to let go of his wife of nearly 10 years: During a recent show in Fairfax, Va., Thicke told the crowd that he’s “trying to get my girl back.” The singer then reportedly dedicated his performance of “Lost Without U” to his ex.

Singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson famously channeled a handful of classic rock stars — including John Lennon, David Bowie, and Gene Simmons — in her 2012 clip for “Blood Brothers.” Now, for her new single “Girls Chase Boys,” she’s tipping her Patrick Nagel-painted hat to Robert Palmer.
The track is the first single from Michaelson’s brand new album Lights Out, due April 15. It’s a darker, more complicated side of the singer, she told EW: “‘Girls Chase Boys’ started out as a break up song but took on a deeper meaning as I continued writing. More than just being about my experience, its focus shifted to include the idea that, no matter who or how we love, we are all the same. The video takes that idea one step further, and attempts to turn stereotypical gender roles on their head. Girls don’t exclusively chase boys. We all know this. We all chase each other and in the end we are all chasing after the same thing: love.”
